Re: **Breastfeeding Support Thread**

i just had a thought, well i had it at 4am when my dd woke up whining but THATS another thread
obviously im not used to feeding her at 9pm, her last nursing is usually at around 7..and then not again until the morning..so uh, maybe THATS why im not pumping anything at nite?!?!
G'd im such an idiot at this..this has really been the hardest most challenging parenting issue ive ever had..and i have a ten year old, so imagine how many times i could messed HIM up already!
Shes napping, and dh is off to work right now..im gonna try it again,.., fingers crossed please!!
Jaime give it like a weeks or so with teh new horns.... I noticed after exclusively pumping for the first 8 weeks and then going to the breast I get only 1/2 as much as I use to now in my pump sessions.... it's like my breasts arent use to the pump or don't respond to the pump as well any more.
Do you do chest compressions when you are pumping? Since I know you are on team GINORMOUS like me.... I only get milk out when I am pumping if I am doing compressions.....
Here is a technique that I read about and use... sounds weird... DH will DEFINTELY make fun of you especially the "shake" part but it REALLY helps!!!
Massage-Stroke-Shake Method

If you exclusively pump EVERY MONTH... if you only pump every once in a while every 2-3 months... the membranes can actually get microscopic tears that you don't see but can decrease the effectiveness of the pump.....
Can you tell I did A LOT of research when I was a SLAVE to my pump

she really is the best...im glad i saw this..i should change mine..maybe there are some tears..thanks maria!!
hey i had another question (sorry im hogging this thread) my dd was always taking the one formula bottle a nite..and we switched the nipple (stupid timing i think) when i came home from the hospital to the 3-6 month nipple (obviously its coming out faster now) ever since then, especially with my supply issues from being sick, shes been getting VERY antsy during EVERY feeding.. i went back to the newborn nipples and my dh thinks im being mean..but i think this is causing a problem for us.. any thoughts??
also, one more question (geez sorry) lately (the past week or so) she has no teeth thankfully but shes been clamping down on my nipple hella hard, like i wanna scream kinda hard..do i ignore this? Why is she treating my poor nipple like her play thing?!?!

I never even thought about replacing the membranes. I used to pump once per day during maternity leave and now that I'm back at work, I pump 2-3 times during the day.
Thanks! This thread is very helpful.

DS is almost 5 months old and I'm still using the newborn nipples. I don't give him bottles, but as far as I know, he's still doing fine with them. I'm afraid to switch to a bigger size b/c I don't want him to reject the breast if it takes a lot more work to get the milk.
As far as the clamping down, maybe when she does that, you can try to take her off for a minute so she learns that she isn't supposed to do that. I'm not sure if that will work though.

What a great thread! I had a hard time as well (for 10 weeks) After the 10 weeks things kept getting better and better. We are in a total groove now! almost 4 months later! It is NOT easy by any means, you really have to be commited to it for it to work, but the rewards are so wonderful!!!!

I would keep her on the slow flow nipple because it is more similar to the breast... think about it you don't get a "fast paced" option on your breasts.... IF you move to a faster flow on the bottle she is going to get frustrated that she has to work on the boob and may refuse the breast.....
AS for the biting.... she is probably teething. When she chomps down FIRMLY and LOUDLY say NO BITE and remove teh breast..... she may get startled and ****** but after a few times she shoudl stop.... better to nip it in the bud now before she can actually take a chunk of your nipple off (happened to one of my friends)

YOU need to be on acidopholus and HE needs to be on an infant probiotic... A lot of peds don't even know about infant pro-biotics.
I was on a lot of antibiotics for my labor and Alexa therefore got it and it KILLED her GI system. She battled a HORRIBLE yeast infection, SEVERE bloating and gas and thrush on both of us for 6 weeks!
I finally figured out to get her on an infant probiotic and after 24 hours her belly was no longer distended and she stoped screaming from the pain of the gas and the yeast infection cleared up in like 3 days!!!
Just go to any healthfood store and get an INFANT probiotic...... If he isn't bottle fed you can express a little Breast milk and mix the probiotic and give it to him with a medicine dropped or 1 CC syringe.
The probiotics that are kept in a refridgerator are teh best and make sure they have AT LEAST 3 DIFFERENT types of live culture bacteria!

I know I haven't been on this thread that much and I am glad we are FMing. Remember what I told you: Doctors told me lots of stuff.
BUT... If it comes down to you having to FF for a feeding or two it's fine. Nobody said you had to FF for every feeding.

Re: **Breastfeeding Support Thread**
I've been off this thread for a while and am trying to catch up, so here it goes all my responses:
I typically changed my membranes when they looked warped. (Not too often) or if I wasn't feeling great suction during a pump.
I was away from DS for nearly a week when he was only 6 days old. And I continued to BF him til a year. The pump really helped!
DS was 11 1/2 pounds when he was born and I EBF him. If he had enough colostrum, then you know a lot of babies have enough.
White, flaky nipples. Yep, I remember those. They sometimes looked a little yellow too. I didn't hurt, so I never thought much about it. Maybe I should've asked. But my nipples didn't fall off.
Biting the nipple. (Without teeth): I would put a finger in his mouth and de-latch him. (With teeth): I would scream bloody murder than stick a finger in his mouth and de-latch him.
In fact, I'm still looking for my right nipple that he bit off around 10 months. If you see it, please mail it back to me.

Oh Jaime you know I know EXACTLY how you feel as I am going through the same thing with Alexa although she LOST weight....
You had A LOT goign on the last month.... with being sick and I'm SURE Melania picked up on it....... Give it a month... Breastfeed often and if she is still hungry then supplement... NO BIG deal.
NO ONE said you had to STOP breastfeeding...... so maybe you have to supplement a little... you can still breastfeed her and have all that wonderful quality time.
I finally let go last week and decided it is what it is and ignore the LC and Ped who were driving me up a wall with conflicting advice..... I will do my best to breastfeed her but if I have to supplement a little well at least she is still getting breastmilk.....
NOw that I am no longer worrying about my supply 24/7 and freaking out about the formula my supply has been increasing and I'm hoping when we go for a weight check on Monday that Alexa's weight has gone up!
Please FM me if you need to vent... I know how hard this is!

Re: **Breastfeeding Support Thread**
Ok, ladies, I'm going to give it another shot. I have been exclusively pumping for almost 2 months now, and it's making me It's getting harder and harder to keep up with DS, who is more awake, alert, and needing attention, and also pump. Lately I've been pumping only every 5-6 hours, and I'm afraid my supply is going to suffer. Currently, I pump about 8 oz. per session..which is fine for now because DS only eats 4 oz. every 3 hours or so. I have a great supply going in my freezer.
Here's my issue: I have flat nipples So I was using the nipple shield, which was God send at first, but I think it only made him a lazy nurser. I was in the process of weaning him from the shield when we hit the whole "possible dairy allergy" BS, and they made me formula feed. After that whole mess, he got even lazier and used to the bottle. So I gave up and started pumping exclusively.
So now I want to try again, and with all my issues, I'm scared it won't work. Some questions/opinions:
- Should I reintroduce the breast slowly, like 1 or 2 feedings a day,and then add more, or just quit the bottles cold turkey?
- Should I use the nipple shield again to help him re-establish a latch with my stupid flat nips?
- Has anyone had success reintroducing the breast after pumping and/or bottle feeding for like 2 months? How did you do it?? FYI, I use the Playtex nursers with the nipple that's shaped like a boob..so I hope that helps.
I it will work..even if I have to alternate between boob and bottle lol..the bottom line is I want to keep him on BM for as long as possible, so I'll do what it takes. Even if it means I'll be attached to a pump for the next 9 months or so
TIA - any advice would help - can't really afford a LC right now, so I'm doing this solo.

Re: **Breastfeeding Support Thread**
A question for anyone who exclusively pumped....I have been getting up in the middle of the night to pump for his feeding. I really want to stop this bc I could just use extra milk from two feedings to make the bottle for this one.....SO what is the best way to stop this pumping session? I was thinking cutting back on time I pump each night this week....you know 9 min, 7 min, 5 min, and see if that helps?

Yup- we went to Mexico for 4 days when DD was 7 months old. I was TERRIFIED that she wouldn't latch when I got back. I pumped every 4 hours while I was on vacation. The whole time, I prepared myself for her not wanting to latch- and the thought broke my heart.
I swear as I walked in the door, I was pulling off my top. I barely said hello to my parents! I grabbed her, went into a room ALONE (so no distractions) and tried to nurse. It was as though I'd never left! She latched right on. In fact, the look of relaxed happiness that crossed her face is something I will NEVER forget. I cried I was so relieved.
Hopefully it will be as easy for you. If it isn't- that doesn't mean you won't get him back on the breast. You'll need patience and maybe the help of a LC (who helped me tremendously).
