Bringing food for a new mom
Our friend just had her first baby on Friday morning. We were supposed to go over to their house Saturday (which is today here) for her husband's bday party. Her husband sent out an email that they don't mind if we stop by, but not to bring any presents for the baby. I was going to make a tray of ziti for them to freeze b/c they will probably be busy with a newborn and all.
Does this sound like a good idea? Any other suggestions? I've never been in this situation before, I usually just bring a gift for the baby.

Re: Bringing food for a new mom
I know I would not want to be cooking too much after I had a child. I think food is a great idea - especially if the food is the kind that can be frozen in portions for future use - like a ziti! Some people even cook before they have their babies so they dont have to think about it when they get home.

Food is an EXCELLENT idea.
I always think it's a great present. With the lack of sleep and adjustment in the house for mom, dad and new baby, the last thing they all think about is preparing meals.

lol.
It would be rancid after a 24 hour flight and it probably wouldn't make it through customs.
All that cheese is yummy, isn't it?

Re: Bringing food for a new mom
As a mommy of a 3 week old I can tell you food is the perfect gift!! Anything that can be frozen is even better.
Actually, a tip for all of you mommies to be, I've been using my crock pot non-stop. I just throw things in and I don't have to worry about having dinner ready at a certain time, we just work around when DS is napping. So far I've only being heating up food people brought over and we froze. This weekend I'm actually going to have to prepare a few things myself. But by the end of the day I am way too tired to think about dinner so its nice to be able to get it out of the way in the morning.

Re: Bringing food for a new mom
The best thing I got from my MIL after my DD was born was frozen chicken cutlets. She made a ton of them and froze them 3 in a bag so all I had to do was take one package out and throw it in the oven to heat up.
Food is a great idea for new parents.

I think that's perfect! I did that for my sister when she had her baby last year. You may also want to consider, after it cools, to cut it up into single servings so they can freeze it that way. This way, they can take it out and heat up one or two pieces as they want it. I had my sisters freezer full of lasagne and ziti, and it will also last longer that way too.

Re: Bringing food for a new mom
That is such a thoughtful idea!!!! As a new first time mom to a 4 week old, I still dig into the freezer every night to pull something out that one of our friends brought over for us for dinner.

Re: Bringing food for a new mom
I have literally written about 50 thank you cards for gifts after Ryan was born - many from people I've never met (friends of my parents, etc) but the most appreciated gift is a meal right now!

It is a wonderful idea! Friends of mine did that for us, and it was great not having to worry about dinner for a week.
