Bringing food through airport security

So a week or 2 ago on the news one morning I was half listening to a segment about how the TSA may be asking you to remove all food/snacks from your carry on before putting it through the machines. Similar to how you have to remove laptops, electronics, etc.

I didn't really pay attention as I was getting ready for work, so I wasn't sure if this was happening already, happening at all airports, going to happen in the future, whatever.

Coming home from vacation yesterday, my carry on got flagged coming out of the xray machine and pulled aside and I was asked to step to a table where an agent opened the bag, went through it and pulled out the bags of chips, candy, and ziplocs of goldfish that i had packed in there for DD on the flight.
She swabbed all the bags with that strip thing and then sent me on my way.

I didn't ask her about it,because I just wanted to get out of there, and it was crowded and busy.

Anyone have this done to them?

When we left from Islip I had snacks in there as well, but they didn't say a word. Then again, the security at Islip, IMO, is a bit lax. (which makes getting through security there a breeze, but kind of unnerving IMO)

Just curious is anyone had heard about this or experienced it yet.

I saw something a couple of weeks ago just recommending that food be kept in a separate Ziploc, like you do liquids or meds, so they are easily taken out if TSA asks you to do it. Maybe that's what you're referring to?

Maybe. I just had it all shoved in my carry on.
Maybe they are just randomly flagging food for swabbing.

Did you fly from MCO? I've read about this happening all the time there. I've never had my food searched though, ever, and we fly all the time

Actually Tampa.
I found it kind of weird but whatever, if they want to swab my cheetos bag, have it.

We just flew back from St. Thomas and I had a ton of snacks. They were all in a ziplock but they took them out and swabbed everything.

I flew out of charleston on Thursday and the girl in front of me had all of her snacks and candy swabbed after the bag was set aside for a further search. I had snacks in my bag and they weren't flagged but my bag was- for the bottle of water i forgot to take out :(. there were no signs at charleston or jfk when where we left from about food.

Re: Bringing food through airport security

I've heard of this often recently, particularly from Florida airports. We flew out of Orlando airport, and some of the people we were traveling with had to take their snacks out and have them checked. We were TSA precheck so we didn't have to.

They did this when I flew out of Orlando, Albany and OKC late last year. Luckily, I had everything in a ziplock bag. It was a huge PITA.

Perhaps they are checking for drugs.

Or they’ve had threats lately.

I always have snacks in my bag and haven’t been pulled out separately but they purposely do it at random.

Edited: looks like I was wrong. Trying to prevent full on searches. I guess snacks look dangerous under X-ray?

When we were flying out of JFK a few weeks ago they announced that we should remove all food. Hi

I just flew this past week out of Newark - but precheck - and didn’t need to remove any food.

I did get stopped after a conference last year in Orlando for having a banana.

I wonder what brought this on.

Funny story, I actually got flagged at MCO going through security. They went through my whole carry-on bag and said the thing that tipped them off was a giant chocolate covered Mickey Mouse apple, they couldn't identify what it was. LOL You would think at MCO (of all places) they would be VERY familiar with all things Mickey shaped!! Chat Icon

I was curious about that too. Did they get some intel that people would be trying to sneak shady things on the plane via snacks?

I don't mind it, anything to make flying safe, but it was just funny because it never happened before.

Chat Icon That airport is the worst! Slowest security, rude employees! The lines are always hours long! I don't know why the government hasn't done something about that airport! I personally think that many of them are so miserable in their lives, that they want to make it as hard as possible for the people coming from the "Happiest place" KWIM? Chat Icon

I completely agree!!!! I find security there a nightmare. Last year when we were there the security guy was asking my DS all of these questions I guess to make sure he was ours but he was only 4. Anyway, he was nervous and wouldn't answer so I answered for him and he actually asked me to not answer, it has to come from him. HE WAS 4!!!!! What idiot thinks that's a comfortable situation for a 4 yr old??? Chat Icon If he was so concerned, I would have gladly shown him my DS birth certificate. So ridiculous. I couldn't believe he was grilling him, asking him if I was his mommy, what's my name, where does he live. WTF??!!! Chat Icon

That’s so strange to do on a domestic flight. They do that on international flights my friends tell me.

To answer the OP, I have not heard of bringing food as a problem. The only problems I’ve had were bringing jelly or something of that consistency. I gave up and just get a sandwich (and wine!) after security.

TSA always asks my daughter questions since we started flying with her at age 3. What’s your name, how old are you, where are you flying to, what’s your mommy’s name, etc... I think it’s great. We always just remind my daughter that they make ask her questions so she’s prepared.

They did this once to my DD. Just - what's your name? That was it.
It never happened again at any airport.
I can see that some kids who are young or very shy wouldn't want to answer,
I know my DD is super shy with strangers and barely wanted to utter her name when asked.
It's not a super effective way to screen IMO.
Kids are unpredictable.
If they are that concerned, start requiring Birth Certificates for kids to fly. But they don't so....

My son (8 at the time) was asked where we were flying. It was NOLA for a cruise. The kid could never remember where we were leaving from. They asked where he was flying. He said "to the cruise". They asked where the cruise was leaving from. He thought for a second & said "you have to ask mommy. I always forget" Chat Icon The agent just laughed & told him to enjoy New Orleans.

Re: Bringing food through airport security

I flew out of JFK on 3/23. Oh. My. God. it was awful. They were yelling constant reminders to remove all food from bags to be put in a separate tray. They also made us take out all electronics including blow dryers & hair straighteners. I was SO glad I had nothing but clothes in my carry-on & was traveling sans kids who always carry snacks. They made a kid in front of me- looked about 4- empty the snacks from his cute little backpack! It was INSANE! I got to the airport 1hr 45min early & got to my gate 10 mins before boarding. First time I've ever experienced or heard of this!!

I flew home on Easter Sunday from Fort Lauderdale. They didn't say a single thing about snacks & only required phones/tablets/laptops to be removed from bags.

Right?! I think some of these agents are on power trips. I'm surprised that the screening guidelines, etc. aren't a universal thing throughout the TSA organization.

I do have to say, TSA pre-check is the best thing ever, and worth the cost. We have flown twice this year with it, and I don't know why we didn't do it earlier. I don't have to take anything out of anything, and keeping my shoes on to avoid the nasty germy foot fungus floor is an added bonus Chat Icon
