Bringing home newborns and toddler germs
BDTD Moms, did you have problems with your older child getting sick and transferring germs to the newborn?
DS has been sick on/off all winter. Most of the time it's just a runny nose but I can't help but be worried about the future newborn we will be bringing home.

Re: Bringing home newborns and toddler germs
DS stayed home with me after DD was born so he didn't get sick until he started going to school again. No one came over if they were sick... it worked out fine for us.

Re: Bringing home newborns and toddler germs
Teddy started summer camp a month after Andrew was born and I worried about this constantly. But while Andrew has been sick more than Teddy was...it took some time for it to happen, maybe like 4 months old, maybe 5 months old. Can you keep your toddler home until 1-2 months??

My DD was born 1/4. I have a kindergartner and a pre-schooler and my infant has not gotten sick at all. I make them wash their hands as soon as they get home.

2yo DS has a jam packed schedule with activities. He goes out at least once a day in the morning. I don't think he'd like it if we kept him at home after the baby was born. We all get a bit of cabin fever if we are home for even 1 full day! Even when we had the blizzard, we still went out.

I will make sure DS washes his hands whenever he wants to touch the baby.
DS washes his hands immediately when he comes home. I hope he doesn't get as sick as he has been all winter.

Re: Bringing home newborns and toddler germs
Just make it a point to have your DS wash your hands often and try not to let him touch the baby too much when he is sick.
MommyIam told me that most newborns actually don't catch their first cold until they are 6 months old because they still have their mother's immunities in their system.
My pediatrician confirmed this. It has nothing to do with bf or bm, but the blood that is passed during delivery.
Sure enough, my DD got her first cold at 6 months.
I think if you take normal precautions you should be OK.
Obviously, if your DS is sick, try to minimize their contact with each other.

.
Really? Because my DS had a pretty bad cold at 3 weeks old.
To the OP: We never pulled my DD out of daycare after the baby was born (she goes 2 days/week), I just had her wash her hands and her face when she came home. I also changed her clothes as well. We were also out with the kids pretty soon after he was born. There was no way I could keep my DD home from her activities. I also didn't think it would be fair to her to keep her from her usual routine.

DS got his first cold at 3 months. He started daycare a few weeks later and caught plenty of colds after that.

Yeah, I didn't buy it either initially, but my pediatrician told me the same exact thing.
DS had quite a few colds prior to DD being 6 months and luckily she never caught them.
The timing could be total coincidence though and I intentionally did not put DS in daycare till DD was 5 months bc of the germ issue.
I'm not sure I totally believe it now, but just throwing it out there.

Re: Bringing home newborns and toddler germs
My baby didn't get sick from his big brother's germs until he was about 9 months old.
My toddler did get sick a few times, but I kept them apart when he was sick and it worked. Once the baby started crawling and got into his big brother's toys, this was no longer possible. And that is when he caught RSV from him!

Re: Bringing home newborns and toddler germs
DD is a 2 day a week program now and is literally starting camp for 3 days a week the week I'm due to give birth!!! I'm just going to be anal about washing her hands and changing her clothes when she gets home..I don't want to disrupt her schedule and make her resent the baby, she hates being home and adores school so I'm hoping it'll somehow work out!!!
