It's possibly the beginning of mastitis. I would call your dr.

I don't have much info on it, but maybe kellymom.com might have info. Or try a search on it on this site. Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: BTDT breastfeeding moms re: fever

It sounds like it could be a plugged duct or mastitis. I know that when my milk first came in,I got really bad engorgement and had HORRIBLE chills and felt like crap. I didn't have a fever though.

To clear a plugged duct the one thing that has ALWAYS worked is to lay the baby down on a bed and to lean over her and nurse like that. The force of gravity while the baby nurses helps to clear the duct.

Call your OB- it is possible you have mastitis. If you do, you need to take antibiotics.

Don't worry about getting the baby sick though- nursing is perfectly fine while you're sick.

Definitely call your doctor. I had the same thing when my DD was about two weeks old and it was a breast infection.

Re: BTDT breastfeeding moms re: fever

I had mastitis when DS was 4 weeks old---fever, chills & hot/red hard lump in my breast-----I would call your doctor, but even with mastitis or a clogged duct they always want you to continue nursing (or pumping)---it will help. Check out this link:

I found heat worked a lot too, I used the hot water in a disposable diaper trick if I couldn't get into the shower.

Re: BTDT breastfeeding moms re: fever

I agree with the others...the fever indicates that you most likely have an infection. I would call your Dr, continue to BF and use warm/hot compresses on your affected breast just before (if you can) and during BF'ing.

Re: BTDT breastfeeding moms re: fever

I got so sick within 4 hours.

take ibprofren

keep nursing

the best thing is rest

message the hell out of boobs...starting from armpit

also hot/cold works too.

sounds funny...but dip boob in bowl of cold water for 5 minutes...message, then heat compress...alternate

don't ignore it, you have to baby it for it to go away.

good luck!Chat Icon

Definitely your OB. If it's an infection, they will put you on antibiotics.

Even if you have mastisis you can nurse through it - although very painful. You could call the doctor just in case. If you have mastisis your breasts will be VERY hot to the touch and very painful. Your nipples could have some discharge.

Good luck.

Re: BTDT breastfeeding moms re: fever

It could be a plugged duct or mastitis. I would call your midwife/OB & in the mean time, pump or breastfeed on the side that hurts as much as possible.

About 1 week PP I had some bad pain in my right breast. I started getting awful chills & my fever shot up over 102 & wasn't going down. I had a clogged duct that my body was fighting. I was instructed to take Motrin & keep pumping & BFing on the right. The clog finally came loose & the fever & chills went away. Chat Icon Feel better!
