BTDT Moms - TMI ? re: 'roids & v-birth

so, baby #2 is on the way, and I have the option of a repeat C or a VBAC.

One of my biggest fears of VBAC is hemmorhoids.Chat Icon

I've had issues before and have already had surgery once previously to have them removed and it was more awful than I can explain.

Recovery was 100x worse than having a C-section.

I'm already getting them now, but not bad.

If you had 'roids during PG, did they get worse when you delivered/pushed?

How long did it take to get back to normal?

I know this sounds silly, but that is one of my biggest fears.

Re: BTDT Moms - TMI ? re: 'roids & v-birth

I didn't have them until I pushed him out. or maybe it was the placenta.

I am not being overly dramatic when I say it was singlehandedly the most painful part of his birth and of my recovery.

I had NO IDEA what a hemmorhoid really was until I had them. I thought they were pimples Chat Icon

I will say (again with no exaggeration) that initially it was the size of a slug. it has gone down considerably but it has not gone away yet.

I am about 4.5 months post partum.

not fun.

I am 1 month PP and still get them due to my v-birth. I am actually surprised that I still get them this long after delivery b/c I guess I thought they would go away immediately. They aren't painful or anything and truthfully, I wouldn't even know they were there but I feel them when I wipe.

Thank you. This is my previous experience with them and it was AWFUL.

I don't think I can bear to go through the possibility of that happening again knowing my previous history.

I got them bad during my labor....honestly, I didn't want to push anymore, said I couldnt, b/c they hurt too much, but he was already out! LOL. But, the hosptial gave me this awesome cream, (on top of the other creams they give you to numb and to cool LOL) but this stuff was just for roids, and made the swelling go down...almost instatnly. They were gone by the time I came home from the hospital. HTH

I think I had a minor one (if you can call it that) when I was pregnant, lol but didn't have issues when I pushed dd out or since...my tailbone on the other hand is a different story.

Problem is I have them already. Not bad, but I am only 17 weeks, so I can only imagine that they will get worse.Chat Icon

I got them bad when I pushed DD out. DH witnessed it and I made him look again a couple of days later. It literally looked like a bunch of grapes on my butt.Chat Icon Chat Icon

I agree with Ophelia- it was the most painful part of recovery. I couldn't sit and everytime but butt clenched involuntarily- it was pure agony. I was laying in my bed crying when I had inlaws over visiting. Heavy duty pain relievers did nothing.

The trick that worked for me- take a sitz bath with epsom salts dissolved in it. When you get out, pat the area dry and use tucks wipes and preparation H, mixed with the numbing cream they give you at the hospital. Then- take 4 ibprofens. 4 regular ones is equivalent to one prescription strength. I swear- I was a brand new woman after doing this. Repeat at least twice a day.

Mine were gone in about a week.

ETA: I used witch hazel on a cotton ball after drying the area from the sitz bath, then proceeded with the rest.

I think you have a history of them already, I'm sure they would get worse if you delivered Vag. I have them and I had a c section Chat Icon so I'm just prone to them in general

I've had them, not related to pregnancy - they come and go randomly (I guess really not "randomly" -I'm generally VERY irregular. I'm sure you are all happy to know Chat Icon ).

I really don't recall having them at all when I was pregnant (I also happened to be more regular than normal).

And I didn't get them from delivery.

Re: BTDT Moms - TMI ? re: 'roids & v-birth

I got them from pushing for 5 hours. I ended up needing a c section because I couldn't get her to descend, so I had to recoup from the section and the aftermath of pushing. To be honest the roids were the worst part of recovery. I was in so much pain it was worse than my incision pain. Because of that I am pushing for a repeat section and don't want to try to go vbac in case I end up needing both again. No way could I deal with that type of recovery with a baby and a toddler.Chat Icon

I didn't have them while pregnant, but I got them pushing (probably took about an hour) I can't remember how long it took for them to subside, though I think they were gone by my 6 week appt.

I won't lie, they were painful, honestly I thought they may have been worse than the vaginal pain, especially a few days after delivering. But they did disappear, and I haven't had a recurrence (it's now 2 years later).

Good luck!Chat Icon

Re: BTDT Moms - TMI ? re: 'roids & v-birth

I never had hemorroids until I pushed out DD. It was the most painful part of the entire birthing experience and took a while to go away completely. It is the only thing I completely dread about giving birth again.

that is how i am...so i am glad to hear it wasn't worse during your pregnancy and delivery...this is one of the few things that scares me about getting pregnant b/c they can be so painful and i already have had the pleasure of dealing with itChat Icon

from my experience if you have the right medication, like really strong cortizone cream it helps A LOT

I had them during my pregnancy with DD, small ones.

To my surprise they did NOT reappear when I gave birth. I was nervous that they would come back or get worse, but they didn't.

This is pretty much my answer too. Except I pushed for 2 hours.

I haven't had them since and I'm currently 22weeks pregnant with #2.

What really helped me during those first week or two was filling the bathtub with a couple inches of hot water - as hot as you can stand it - and sitting in it. And dabbing witch hazel on it.

Also, eat a high fiber diet too so you don't have to work so hard to do #2.
