BTDT Moms: Flying, Car Seats, Etc.
I know there have been tons of posts about this before but when I searched, I could not find the answers to my questions so I hope all you BTDT Moms can help ...
So, we're flying down to FL to see the in-laws. Not sure if someone in the family can pick us up at the airport but we're leaning towards a rental.
DS is 2 and in a booster seat. Chances are, we will be driving to the airport and leaving the car in long-term parking.
Should we:
A) Bring our existing car seat on the plane and use it in FL (nervous about this b/c I don't want our Graco to be lost or damaged by the airlines).
B) Get a car seat through the car rental company.
C) Buy a cheaper car seat (like Cosco) and check that seat rather than bring ours from home.
D) Something else

If you're DS is 2 I'm guessing you are buying him a seat. If so, carry the seat with you and sit your DS in the car seat. We've flown with our DS 4 times, all before the age of 2 but close to it, and we always purchased him a seat and had him sit in his car seat. Best thing ever bc he couldn't get out and he was comfortable. He's napped all 4 flights.

I would do A or C. You don't know what kind of shape the car seats from rental companies are in (although I had to do it once and it wasn't horrible but it was because there was no other option and was impressed by the installation and seat knowledge of the employees of Avis).
They charge an arm and a leg to rent carseats for a long time period as well so a Cosco would be a cheaper option.
It is good to have something to restrain your toddler on the flight since the seatbelts dont get tight enough. We use the cares harness usually since we tend to have a seat waiting at our destination.

He is 2 so I believe you have to buy him a seat. Take the seat with you on the plane and stick him in it. He will be more comfy and you won't have to worry about chasing him

That's what we did. It makes life a lot easier. I strapped DS in and didn't let him out until the plane landed.

We've always checked our car seat with the luggage. I bought a special car seat bag at BRU and we check it with our luggage. Car seats are not counted towards your luggage so you don't have to pay for it to go. Also, they always bring them out separately from the regular luggage so I think they place them in a special area.
I always prefer to bring our own rather than borrow one I don't know.

I am assuming if your DC is 2 he is in a convertible seat not a booster. I would bring it and use it on the plane so you don't have to worry about damage by the airline. This way you have it down there. I am not a fan of renting.
Now if he is really in a booster seat they are not certified for airline travel. You need to check your seat and make sure it says it is approved for air travel. If it isn't I would get a bag and gate check it. If you check it with your bags I would be concerned it is more likely to be damaged.

She said he is in a booster but they are not approved for planes.

ITA with this. We just flew with our 3 and 5 yr old and flew with them last year too. best thing was to bring our carseats. it kept them strapped in like in the car so my younger child didn't even ask to get out. when we got to the airport we just put the seats in our rental and that was that.

We brought DDs car seat on the plane, strapped her in and it was great. She was comfortable being in her own seat (ages 2+ you have to buy a seat anyway), so, it worked best for us.
