BTDT moms of reflux babies... stopping meds?

dd was diagnosed with reflux & put on meds when she was 2.5 months old. at 5 months old she was diagnosed with a milk allergy and the GI said he wasn't sure if she really had reflux as well, or the milk allergy was her problem all along. he said when I felt comfortable, I could try taking her off of the reflux meds and seeing how it went.
anywho, dd is 7.5 months now and i'm giving it a go. she was on axid 2.5 ml 2x a day... for moms who stopped reflux meds for their child, how long did it take to notice a difference? would I notice right away? or since she's been on it so long, could it take a while to really leave her system and spark back up at some point?

We tried to wean DS from his meds a few times and it was obvious that he was still refluxing. We knew almost immediately after a missed dose. This went on until well after he turned one.

Is your LO at silent reflluxer? I assume yes because otherwise you can see the reflux/spit up.

We finally were able to wean DS with the help of a pediatric chiropractor. I was getting very concerned with pumping my little guy with meds and started googling in an attempt to learn about natural treatments. It was hard to wrap my mind around it at first as I associated chiropractic care with 'a bad back' but it's really about your spine/ nervous system...which controls every single function in the body.

I'm a believer now.

The ped said to stop them at 4 mo. I stopped about 5 mo. I figured I could always go back (axid, maalox and gas drops). She didn't have any issues. She was better with spitting up from about 3.5 mo when she could hold herself up better. She is still on alimentum. We will try her off it by adding similac sensitive an oz at a time. She is 8 mo.

my DD was on 2 ml of axid 2x a day... at 9 months we saw it wearing off and that her problems were coming back. the doctor now suggested 2.5 ml of axid 2x a day at 10 months old. so i guess we are staying on it. youll be able to see if weaning is a good idea or not. try decreasing the dosage each day rather than stopping cold turkey

the pediatrician & GI both said not to wean off, just stop and see... shes been off now 2 days and i haven't noticed a difference, thats why i was wondering.
And yes she was diagnosed with silent reflux.

My little one was on axid too. We started weaning the meds (skipping one of three doses) at about 6 months and she didn't seem to need them once she started sitting up. Good luck!

Re: BTDT moms of reflux babies... stopping meds?

DS had a milk protein and soy allergy at birth. It took about 2 months to get him the right formula. He also had reflux. Which was diagnosed after we got him on Elecare. He was put on Zantac 2 times a day along with Mylanta... At 5 months it stopped working and he was switch to Axid 3 times a day. We cut down to 2 doses at 1 year old. He was on Elecare for the milk/soy allergy until 15 months. We tried to wean off the Axid at that time but he was still refluxing. He was down to one dose at night at that time. It took until he was 20 months old to get him off of it completely... He is now 3 and he is STILL allergic to soy and I still have a script for his Axid cause he has flare ups.. I know the allergy and reflux go hand in hand.. I knew within missing one dose that he was still having issues..

We stopped at 9 months just to see if there was any change and there was. Put him back on at 10.5 months (he also had milk allergy)

DD is almost 5 months and I have cut her down to 2ml of zantac before bed whereas it was 2ml 2x per day before.

She seems to be doing fine. It was by accident actually - forgot to give it to her one morning and she was fine so for now I am only giving it to her in the PM and eventually will cut that out too (within the next month).

Like you, DD was also switched to Alimentum for milk protein allergy. I am not sure she had an allergy, I think it may have been reflux all along. At 6 months, I am going to try switching her to Enfamil AR and see how she does.

Ped is totally on board.

we were the opposite... she went on meds for reflux 1st and it helped for a bit, but then got much much worse. switched reflux meds 3x and was tested for an allergy 7x before it showed/was diagnosed. that's why the GI said he's not even convinced she actually had reflux...
I think she did, bc when we switched to one of the reflux meds, she got significantly worse, then better when I switched back. so if it wasn't reflux, i'd think that whichever meds she was on, wouldn't make a difference.
maybe she just outgrew the reflux? I haven't given her a dose of axid since sunday night...

I am a Chiropractor that specializes in pediatrics. I am also a Mom of 2 LOs, one of which had reflux. Gentle spinal adjustments helped him tremendously. If anyone has any questions regarding this topic feel free to FM with questions or call the office at 631-647-8324.
