Calling all attorneys-NOT a legal question

Hope you guys can help. I may have an opportunity for a position with Thomson West.

1. Are you familiar with this company?
2. Do you and/or your colleagues use these products?
3. Are there many companies to order thesae products from?

TIA!!!

Yes - West is like the legal bible Chat Icon The biggest competitor is lexis. They both have an online database where you can do legal research. I would say 99.9% of the firms out there utilize either Westlaw or Lexis.

Both companies also produce various legal documents/books/aids. Most firms and all law schools have a legal library and a good percentage of the books in the library are produced by West. We purchase quite a few books at our firm from West, and we also use Westlaw for our online legal research.

Yes. It's a very well-established, growing company and most of the people I've met who work for West (they send out sales reps and tech assistants to our firm all the time) really seem to enjoy it.

Definitely a well established company. Like the AP said every office uses West or Lexis as well as all the law schools.

Re: Calling all attorneys-NOT a legal question

Ok now i just have to wait for a call from the mgr. I talked to sort of a screener. Most of my work in the past has been with transactional attorneys(real estate) So I asked her most of your clients are litigators then? She said yes, lawyersChat Icon yes I know I mean these are people that argue cases in front of judges and/or juries? She had no clue. I also had to explain title insurance to her.

I just realized i put this on the wrong board-I will ask for it to be moved to NFR but since some of our Mommies are lawyers it worked out...Thanks!

Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon I agree with Beth. West is very reputable and popular with both law schools and law firms. Good luck.

Not a lawyer, but I work in the educational field and I can tell you that Thompson is one of the largest companies in the educational field. It's very well established and supposed to be a great company to work for.

Re: Calling all attorneys-NOT a legal question

One of my law school friends has been working for them since we graduated in 1993. She works in their Rochester offices. She started out working with ALR (legal encyclopedia) and then West bought the company. She is very happy. She is an editor. She is constantly challenged (something she wants as she is very intelligent). She has a flexible work schedule and was able to scale down to part time when she had her son. I don't know what position you are looking at but I would give the company a thumbs up.

Absolutely true. We use West books and Westlaw (as well as Lexis) in my firm and we also had representatives who would teach training courses when I was in law school. It's a very good company.
