Recovery time is usually a few days, you will be put under anesthesia and they will dilate your cervix and scrape your uterus clean. It helps to prevent infection, especially if you aren't miscarrying on your own. Each person is different - I would expect it to be somewhere around an hour or so. They will most likely tell you to abstain for a few weeks as you will bleed lightly for anywhere from a week to three weeks. And usually they tell you not to try again for a few months, but that's generally for emotional reasons and not physical. I do know people who have gotten PG their first cycle after a D&C.
Good luck to you...

Re: Can someone explain the whole D&C thing please
I would write most of what the previous poster wrote. Just wanted to add that I was under anestesia for 30 minutes bled for a few days, spotted for a few weeks. Got AF again 31 days later. We were told we could TTC again after 1 regular period.
I slept most of the day of the procedure and the next day actually felt great, I had so much energy back again.

Re: Can someone explain the whole D&C thing please
Hi, Again, I am so sorry for your loss . I was given the option of either being put under anesthesia in the OR or having the procedure done in the OB's office with local anesthesia. I chose the local and for the most part, I regret it because I felt everything (minus most of the pain). So if given the choice, you may want to consider being put under anesthesia. I can tell you that it's a relatively quick procedure. I had mine done a little over a week ago. I am still bleeding a bit but it has subsided for the most part. Please feel free to FM me if you have any questions .

Re: Can someone explain the whole D&C thing please
I have a deathly fear of anesthesia, I had mine done in the OR at the hospital but my OBGYN did a cervical block after pleading and I was awake, I dont think you should go that route, nor do most Dr's allow it anyway. I begged.
IT was over in less then 10 min's from start to finish.
I had cramping for about 3 days and light spotting for about a week....

Re: Can someone explain the whole D&C thing please
Im so sorry. I just had a d&c on monday. It was ok. I had anastesia. My doctor said it is better to do it then to miscarry on your own because it cleans you completely out and can heal faster. I didn't really bleed that much that day just had some cramping. But on Friday I bled alot (alot of huge clots) and cramped alot more. My doctor said thats because your uterus is going back down to normal at that point. But the next day there was no more blood. Just try and stay off your feet for a few days. I know exactlly how you feel. I am just finally getting over the shock. If you need anything else let me know.

Re: Can someone explain the whole D&C thing please
You have FM
I am SOOOOO incredibly sorry. I had no idea you were going thru this!!!!
I had a D&C almost 6 wks ago. It was relatively painless and quick. I was pretty ok that day (it was a Friday) and all that wkd. Mon and Tues i had cramping which i took motrin and was fine. I bled on and off for a few wks but only needed a panty liner.
The emotional part is the hardest. Not only are you sad, but your hormones eff w. you ALOT. You will have days where you feel strong and ok, and w/in a few hrs, you can be crying again. THIS IS ALL NORMAL!!! Do NOT beat yourself up over anything you feel.
We are ALL here for you sweetie. This is a terrible and hreatbreaking thing. It will help to sometimes come on the boards and ask questions, vent, cry, whatever!!!!
You are in my thoughts!!!!!!

Re: Can someone explain the whole D&C thing please
I'm so sorry....
Most of the previous girls covered it. Bleeding is different for everyone.
The D&C was my first surgery ever, I was nervous but it really was no big deal. My 1st D&C @ 8 weeks - I felt great the next day. No bleeding or cramping at all .
My 2nd @ 10 weeks - a little cramping that day, bleed for less than a week. pantiliner not like AF. I guess more like spotting.
The emotional part is the hardest. Living for 10 weeks as pregnant and then having to get over that.
Again so sorry
