What's puzzling to me is most everyone's posts on here. I think the posts are rude, nasty, and really mean. How sad that people are like this. Everyone is reading way too deeply into this. This is a family in need. They didn't ask for help. They asked for advice if anyone knew of a place that offers help to those in need. Someone on here, asked the wife what she needs. She was honest. Now, she is being ridiculed for her honesty. How sad.
I personally know the family. They are a good, hard working family. They live four houses down the block from me. Their daughter is in Kindergarten with my son. The mom was very upset at the bus stop this afternoon. I asked her what's going on...and she told me about this whole discussion on here. So I quickly came home to see what's up. And I cannot believe the posts I have read. I'm disgusted. This is a family in need that has encountered very rough times, and tragedy. I family that had to leave their home in LA because of hurricane Katrina. A family that lost a 3 yr old son who drowned in the neighbors pool. I am sickened by all of your responses. Yes, the father/husband has a good job, BUT, try paying a mortgage, extremely high property taxes, putting food on your table, buying school supplies, stuff for school projects, etc, health insurance, co payments, medications, GAS, oil, electric, car payment, car insurance...need I say more? Because of his good job, and income, the family is not eligible for any kind of assistance. Maybe he should quit his job, so he CAN GET assistance and not post for advice on here? I feel so badly after reading these posts. I personally know all the children of this family, and they are all such good kids. Well behaved kids. Intelligent children. So sad that the world has come to this. Someone is really down in the dumps, and reaching out, and this is what he gets.
Anyway, you can all read into my post also...LOL I'm just waiting to see what people come up with after reading this!
Hope you all have a wonderful holiday!
Sorry they are having a bad time BUT LIF is NOT a charity board....there must be a better place to go and ask for assistance.....sorry but there have been quite a few people on here that have been burned by FREQUENT posters so I can see the apprehension of a posted who's first post is asking for stuff.....

Re: Can someone explain to me
I just became aware of the financial situation today. At the bus stop when I saw the Mom VERY upset. Honestly, sometimes it's easier to aske for advice on this type of message board. Personally, I wouldn't discuss my financial stuff with my neighbors. But the Mom opened up to me today about it. People have their own way of handling things....maybe to him this was the way to do it. I see nothing wrong with that. He was not begging. He was asking for advice.

But they didn't come here asking for a handout, they came asking WHERE they could get help. Big difference in my opinion. And like I said earlier, people here took it upon themselves to offer them help. This whole situation makes me so happy I still am naive enough to not worry about being "scammed" out of a used coat b/c someone might profit from it vs. some poor kid going cold in the frigid weather! I'll take that risk ANY FRIGGIN DAY!!

to be fair, his first post was asking WHERE he could go for help, and still they have never asked for anything unless it was offered to them. The items they said they needed is bc they were ASKED by an LIFer if they needed anything and they told her. They never asked for anything.

i totally understand that, I was just curious. Like I said, Im more than willing to help and I am sending them my DS winter coat from last year. People can call me naive if they dont want to believe they are truly a needy family, but Ill sleep better knowing that if in fact there was a little boy going to go cold this winter that I did something to help (by sending a used coat just sitting in my closet) instead of worrying that someone is trying to pull the wool over my eyes.

I remember this too. They had said they had donated in the past and all the info is about how to donate but not how to get stuff if you're in need.
However, I'll be really disgusted if these are people looking for free donations of stuff that they can turn around and sell on ebay.

Re: Can someone explain to me
regarding the post above...they have donated to ME. My family. WHen I met the Mom in September at the bus stop for the first time, she found out I had twin girls. A few weeks later, her and her son, brought over a HUGE rubbermaid bucket of beautiful baby girl clothes, in like new condition, and these clothes were her 5 yr old daughters baby clothes. She could not reuse these, since her youngest is a boy. So she gave them to me. And honestly, I was so grateful. Raising twins is not an easy task - financially I mean. I spend $20 a day on baby formula alone. SO this meant so much to me. And, she wanting NOTHING in return. Absolutely nothing. And yes she could have sold her clothes on Ebay, but no, she donated them to someone in need. That's a good person. ANd to be honest with all of you, when you have many children, there isn't any time to selll things on ebay LOL. Honestly, with four children(in my case), it's so hard to go to the post office and mail something. I'm too busy in the home, helping with homework, cooking dinner, and during the day, taking care of my twins. Like I said, everyone can read into this all they want.

Re: Can someone explain to me
Just wanted to post about a great charity place...It's callled the Long Island Life Center, they are located on Deer Park Ave. I will mention this to Sherry, or most likely she'll read this on here. I donated most of my daughters (my 4 yr old) baby clothes to this place. This is a place that helps out anyone with children UNDER two years old. They give you a form/checklist to write what you need, and then they go to their supply room, and pick it all out for you. I was referred to them when my daughter was a year, and I could not believe how generous, and the wonderful condition of the clothes and supplies. They also give diapers. I received so well from the place, that I wanted to give back. So I donated all of my baby equipment and clothes to them. They do not charge for a thing. They give. They do not check your financial status. They don't ask if you're going to sell it on ebay. I'm wondering how many times they've been scammed. But I guess it's worth the risk. In this day and age, there are many families in need. Only thing I would be nervous about....all the talk about bedbugs. I'm concerned now about using these places and transporting home a little buddy. LOL Anyway, if anyone on here has babys stuff, great place to donate to. This organization does not make money off of their donations, and they really help the needy!

I just wanted to say thank you for taking the time to post this. You are a good friend and neighbor . I think some people should learn from this that you shouldn't jump to call someone out just bc you don't think things "add up". Sometimes I think people want it to be a scam just to have something to talk about... Please tell the family that this site really is filled with amazing, caring people. And I know that many may want to help more now knowing it is legit.

Re: Can someone explain to me
I spoke to the mother last night, and she is so embarassed that people think these things of her and her family when her DH wasnt even asking for handouts in the first place.
She told me her story and what had happened, and she seems like a very caring mother, who just fell on hard times. I have no reason to believe after talking with her that they are scammers. In my opinion, they are truly a family in need.
The poor woman went into detail about how they spend their money on groceries, why they are overweight, why she doesnt have hand me downs (they though they were done having children and gave the stuff to friends, then their son passed away and the clothes they do have, just dont fit the other children this season), what bills the have. It was so unnecessary for her to feel she had to do that.
She was so upset for the way she was made to feel, and felt the need to spill her guts to me to prove that she wasnt the person, or her family, werent the people they were accused of being or made out to be.
I think they are a completely normal family, where finances were tight to begin with, then they had a TON of unexpected expenses arise and have now fallen behind on their bills and are just trying to keep their heads above water.
Some may say, why not go to Kmart and buy a coat (and she has, which is why they didnt ask for a coat for all of the kids) but when you have that many kids and even if you only spend $20 on a coat, that adds up and can be gas in the car, a weeks worth of groceries, their electric bill....when you are living paycheck to paycheck.
As for them asking for handouts, when she gave her information to Heather, her husband miscommunicated some things and she was under the impression that Heather was asking personally what she could give and not that she was going to ask the entire board. It was a simple miscommunication. As for the "specifics" of the items, how many of us have adopted a family before and the list asks for specific toys, not just general "toys"...it almost always does and no one calls them out for it.
She sent me pictures of her family, in front of their home. I have their address, I could very well go drive to Greenlawn and now verify that the address they gave matches the home in the picture with the 7 kids on the step. I wont, but I could.
I am still helping them out, and if you would like to, please FM me.
I am ashamed of some of the things that were said and the accusations that have flown in the past 2 days. It is a sad commentary on how jaded some people have become. I should hope you never find yourself in the same position having to reach out to strangers to keep your children warm, and if you ever do, I hope people reach out to you and help you when you need it, instead of kicking you while you are down.

Re: Can someone explain to me
I never ask anyone to justify their need.
If I have it to give, I give. It's not up to me to judge their level of desperation. If they are lying scammers, they will answer for that, but not to me.
It breaks my heart to hear this woman was embarrassed, went into detail of her need. No one should feel compelled to do that for a used coat or some socks.
Reminds me of Queen for a day-when the woman with the saddest story won a frigidedaire.
I would rather over give to people who don't need it then make those in need prove to me they need it. Humiliating.

If they are lying scammers, they will answer for that, but not to me.
I would rather over give to people who don't need it then make those in need prove to me they need it. Humiliating.
this is how I feel.

I just have to applaud your devotion to helping this family, even though others on here wouldn't believe them to be in need. You defended them and still are going out of your way to help. You are awesome.

Re: Can someone explain to me
I am getting everyones FMs, Im not ignoring anyone.
I am going to compile the list and get back to each of you.
I do want to contact the mother first to see how she wants to receive the items and the best way to go about getting them to her.

thank you, but I dont need applause for it. Im only doing what I hope other people would do for me if my family ever found ourselves to be in this same position. Its just being a part of humanity, its what we should all do for one another without accolades. But thank you.

Nah, its a good thing, take credit for it.
I kinda feel the same way.
There is a guy at 7-11 I basically support ...He is always there, always asking for a coke, a hot dog, ciggerettes, a whole load of stuff, and DH and my Mom yell at me for giving him money etc, and all I can say is if he needs it THAT bad he has to beg strangers, I honestly don't care what he uses it for, I feel for him and he can have a $1...Sounds naive but I think you get my point.
I believe in the good in people...Sure it could be a scam, but I wouldnt get all worked up over it unless someone was coming on here asking for donations of $$$ or stuff....then I might want more info...But in this situation, I think it does me more of a disservice to question motives over socks and underwear then to simply help.
Not sure that makes sense..
