Can someone please help me with this math problem?
I hate Math! How do they expect this 6 year olds to figure out word problems if we're scratching our heads going hmmmm?
Anyways this is the problem.
Brandon has some apples and some oranges (There is a picture of a basket with 7 apples and an empty one next to it) Draw more than 2 and less than 6 oranges in the empty basket. Write a subtraction sentence that tells how many fewer organges than apples.
Now my question is this: Is the subtraction sentence supposed to be 6 - 2 = 4? or 6 - 4 =2?
Then they want me to write an addition sentence with the same numbers as my subtraction sentence. So would my addition sentence be 4 + 2 = 6 or 2 + 4 =6?
Im confused. Please help. I feel so dumb that I can't get this...

i think it would be 7 - X = Y, where X is the number of oranges you draw and Y is what you get when you subtract - so if you draw 4 oranges, it's 7 - 4 = 3 --- because they are saying to write a sentence that tells how many fewer oranges than apples, you start with 7 because that is how many applies you have to begin with

If you have basket of 7 apples and 5 oranges. The difference would be 2 less oranges than apples so it would be 7-5=2

I would draw 3 oranges. So that's more than 2 oranges but less than 6 oranges.
Then I'd write 7-3=4
So there are 4 less oranges than apples in the basket.

This is what I was thinking.
but really 3, 4 or 5 work dont they?
7-3=4 ; 7-4=3 ; 7-5=2 since all three are more than 2 but less than 6.
ETA: yes, as a kid, for homework I would have put all three answers

This.
This is tough for a 6 year old to me but I think it would help to do one step at a time. Kids have a tough time bc they think they need to know every step before they start which just makes it harder. Let him draw in the oranges first. When he's done, then ask him how many more apples then oranges. Then ask him if he know what numbers he subtracted to get that and then worry about writing it down. Let each step lead him to the next and see if he has an easier time.

Re: Can someone please help me with this math problem?
Thanks for your help. It helped me figure it out but it wasn't easy explaining it to a 6 year old. Took a while but I hope he remembers it on the test.
I cannot believe how they expect these 6 year old to understanding a word problem with that much reasoning thinking. Everything is about preping them for college at an extremely early age. Next year I am enrolling him in college. Might as well with these word problems they get...
