Not for nothing but I think it is more difficult to live in suburbs of NYC such as Brooklyn, Queens, SI, etc. I mean fine, if you're working in the city, the commute is a little shorter, but come on...you cant find a decent affordable apartment to live in, the house are in horrendous shape, everything is waaaaay more expensive than on LI and the quality of life and your next door neighbors are not very favorable...I think for those of you that live out east should feel very fortunate. Thats just my honest opinion.

did you see the prices of houses in greenpoint? right now they want over 1 million for a dump!!!! Chat Icon Chat Icon

Yup! And look at the lovely neighborhood...scaryChat Icon

not only does the neghborhood stink, try finding parking when you go grocery shopping... I might be in minority here but I hate new york!

not at all..i hate it too!!!!!!!!!!

And I asked a question, and you still skirted around the answer. What do clean streets, and rude New Yorkers have to do with anything?

Ummm yes I am answering it. You are asking why its difficult to live on LI. I said the frustration (for me) is hard to live with because we pay so much to live near a dirty city with rude people.

ok, so it is difficult to live on Long Island because there are dirty towns and rude people.

got it.

No, thats not the answer I gave at all. It has something to do with money too. See answer above. Chat Icon

I like NY and dont want to leave but feel one day I eventually will. Dh is NYPD too, so we are here to stay for at least another 16yrs Chat Icon

I feel like LI has changed and the housing and TAXES are a major reason why and a MAJOR part of my life (soon, we are house hunting) that I will be working just to afford.
I also feel that there is no 'middle' class anymore..its just changed, ALOT!

Im here to stay though, whatever it takes.

All I have to say is that I was at a wedding in Texas over the weekend and was practically kissing the ground at JFK when I landed. Not that Texas was bad or anything - but to me - there is NO PLACE like New York!!!!

I always thought I would never leave NY, but when I graduated college and met my now DH, I realized that I was not going to marry a rich man and in order to be comfortable, we had to move. I miss NY just because that is where I lived for 28 years but I do not think it is "worth" what it costs to live there. I would not move back. I am happy that I left and that I have my own house, a nice car and am living comfortably

Re: Can someone tell me

There are definitely things about LI that make it a difficult place to live (I posted also), and many are things that anyone living in the metro area deals with (high taxes, housing, traffic, conjestion, etc.).

Though I will say that I reluctantly converted in favor of LI after moving into DHs place. I had been living in NYC for about 13 years, most recently in Brooklyn. I decided to move in with DH because he owned and I was renting. Initially I said I wanted to go back to Brooklyn or look for a place in Queens.

However, shortly after moving to LI, I changed my mind. It is cleaner here, and less crowded overall though the roads are a nightmare. Also, more plants, trees, and more space. It's quiet at night, and the schools are better overall. The first time I went back tp my last neighborhood (Bay Ridge--a decent area) it seemed crowded, dirty, cramped, and just not as desirable. There are some beautiful homes there and nice apartments, but just not worth it for the minuses.

So, while LI isn't the easiest place to live, I do like it better than some places.

I think you should all move near me in NJ! Still can commute to NYC, more affordable housing (depending where you are) and less traffic and congestion in the shopping areas...at least in my neck of the woods. My parents live in Queens and it is a 1 hr drive. Plus I am close to major transportation and highways. Chat Icon

this JMO, but if you leave LI to go just about anywhere else in the US... when you come back, drive down the LIE, SS or any major road and look at all the trash on the side of the road. Chat Icon

I might get flamed for this - but i really think that the trash problem is more NYC than long island. I agree that certian parts of the LIE and Belt Pkwy, amongst others, have bad graffiti and trash problems, but I dont find this to be the case on long island.

I agree the highways on LI look like crap compared to most other states I have seen. Trash, unmanicured bushes etc.
Looks like crap.

For us it's because while our taxes/daycare/commute keep going up, our salaries do not.

Posted by MrsDiamondgrlie

Well I think its the frustration of paying all this money for homes and taxes for what??? Nasty people and filth.

Um, excuse me?

You think the city is clean and the people are sweet? I had to write my OP fast, I am at work and couldnt fully explain right away.

I think most of us are sweet - and my roads are clean. There are azzholes everywhere you go. I guess you live in a worse area than I do - or maybe come in contact with more nasty people.

I agree...the litter situation in Brookhaven is deplorable. My neighbor and I were volunteering for months to clean up certain areas along Sunrise (Adopt A Highway) because we couldn't take looking at the mess as we got on and off everyday. I never see that stuff outside of the state. Even the litter campaigns that the state was running for awhile wouldn't deter the slobsChat Icon

I really think you summed it up in your first post - taxes and housing. Cost of living here is very high..... But its all relative to where you live. Cheaper housing down south and you *may* have a lower salary.

To me, Long Island is all I've ever known. Born and raised on the South Shore Nassau now living on North Shore Nassau. Sometimes even that feels like a world of difference (in terms of open space, strip malls, gas prices!!).

We live on one salary as I am a SAHM. It's a struggle, but we manage and do well. I don't think we'll ever leave because DH is tied to his family's business in Queens.

It's all relative. If you live in a certain town or a "big" house you may pay more taxes. Goes the same here and other states as well, not just NJ.

NJ has the highest taxes in the country, so we're paying more in comparison to the same size houses, similar towns, etc. in other states.

Sure, especially in the county I live in... taxes on the average around here are 5 figures. We have a fairly modest average sized home and are paying 15k + a year in taxes.

but the point I was really trying to make in my OP was that moving to NJ is NOT that much different than living in LI as one poster stated.

No...they have some of the highest counties along with NY (NY still beat out NJ with Westchester and Nassau (1 and 2 respectively), but NY still ranks higher when it comes to taxes.

For MrsRbk - I completely agree that moving to NJ is not going to solve your problems of cost of living. Maybe some states will, but not NJ - actually not most of the Northeast.

The prices and taxes. However, sometimes I think it all boils down to some are trying to keep us with the Joneses and not making financial decisions based on what they can afford but more on because they are living in LI they have to keep up with everyone.

I agree. The keeping up with the Joneses can get out of hand. I'm sure it is everywhere though

The most difficult aspect of New York life for me is the crowds. I dislike being crammed on/in the LIRR, subway, Penn Station, sidewalks, malls on weekends, Jericho Turnpike/LIE traffic, you name it. Sometimes I get tired of being around lots of people all the time.

I think that New Yorkers get a bad reputation for being rude and pushy because we grow up with so many people around us -- I think that a lot of folks find themselves wanting to compete for space, for attention, and so on.

But that's the cost of living in such a great, great place -- lots of other people want to be there, too! Chat Icon
