Re: Can someone tell me
As someone who just moved off of Long Island, I can give a few reasons. Believe it or not housing prices was only a tiny part of it. Taxes are insane and will never go down! I feel Long Island has become soooo overcrowded. Yes I know down here in NC it eventually will be crowded, but at least it is nice now. Where I am there is never traffic unless there is a major accident. I never wait to get into a restaraunt, even on a Friday or Saturday night. I get to work from home part time instead of going into the city. My way of life has just improved tremoundously! I love where I am and could never go back to Long Island. And my area has EVERYTHING Long Island does. I am in a great school district, I have a great mall 10 mintues away, all the stores Long Island has. I am not going to sit here and say NC is better than Long Island, but even my mother was suprised of how great it is when she came to visit. I have everything Long Island has at half the price, plus I am lucky enough to have a wonderful sister in law and brother in law and my nephew so it makes it even better.

Re: Can someone tell me
In addition to house prices and taxes, I think utilities and services are very expensive on LI too.
LIPA, Keyspan and cable are all very expenisve. I also take the LIRR and a monthly ticket for train only is $262

Re: Can someone tell me
I have lived on long Island for 5 years.....but have lived in upstate NY, and Oklahoma before.
Yes...the main crush is housing and taxes...which are higher whenever your near a major city for the most part.
However, everything else is also more costly here, from movies to groceries, car insurance is double, I could go on and on.
It's funny my little brother was here this past weekend, and he was gauking at the price of cold cuts....7.99 or 8.99 a pound, whereas he can go to the butcher by him, and does not pay more than 4.99 a pound for ham. It seems small, but it all adds up. Every extra 2 or 3 dollars tacked onto things, means thousands by the end of the year.
Yes, you can make more on Long Island...but is it really THAT significant for everyone? I make 10K more than I did upstate...big whoopee
You will be able to upgrade you home and car much quicker elsewhere.
Another poster mentioned that Long Island is also much more materialistic...SO TRUE!! I am not saying it's a bad thing, it's just more difficult to attain what is "NORM" here.
Anyway, all that being said...I LOVE living on long Island. I work my butt off for it, but it's a trade off, you just have to decide what priorities you have, and work from there.

That's a harsh view. It's all relative I guess. I grew up on LI and have lived elsewhere and am glad to have settled back here. No nastiness and filth where we live.

The things you mentioned aren't the things that I really love about Long Island though - for me it is proximity to the beach, to a major city that offers great cultural opportunities, restaurants etc. I dont really care about malls and shopping, so it is all what your preferences are..... I don't think my quality of life would improve much by living in NC if I had to travel far for all of these things....

aside from the price of homes and taxes, why it is "so difficult to live on LI". Not looking for drama, seriously, I just want to know what constitutes this feeling for some people. that is exactly why it is so difficult. the price of homes & property taxes.
I'm not sure how much you know about costs in many other states, but it is significantly lower than around here. and jobs don't pay that much lower than here, some even pay more.
also, higher car insurance & utility bills don't help, we have one the highest car insurance & utility costs in the US.
there is a good reason why so many ppl are leaving LI.
sad

Not my part of LI but as a whole state around here. I work at a job on a 800 line and talk to people all over the country and the world and I always know who the NYers are before I even verify their info or pull up their account and not from their accent.
I know its a generalization but go to chicago or houston, the streets are clean, hardly any graffiti... we pay alot for... well I dont really know.

This is true. I lived out of state for over 10 years and prices for most things are cheaper elsewhere. I lived in a major city and still prices were cheaper than on LI.
And while Stefanie joked about weddings, I do think there is a different mentality here. People do feel pressured to keep up with other people, whether it is the materials things they buy or the amount they spend on gifts, etc. It all adds up. When I lived in other areas, I definitely saw a difference with this.

It's that prices are so inflated here and many of us make sh*t salaries.....
But we stay because we do love it, we're used to it, our families are here--etc.
Paying off school, the rising cost of everything. Seriously, kind of a no brainer to me.

Re: Can someone tell me
I can't find any other reason other than home prices and taxes. For that you get great schools, great medical facilites and beautiful parks and beaches. I know for a fact I couldn't make the money I'm makng in NYC anywhere else. So, what's the point of living anywhere else. As for "keeping up with the jones", that goes back to personal preference. If someone would rather have the biggest pool with the longest slide on the block than be able to pay your bills, that's their problem.
I wouldn't live anywhere else
I Long Island

For all of the reasons that I LOVE Long Island are the reasons I hate it...
I can never live anywhere else, but it DRIVES me insane...everything is expensive, but to be from Long Island/NYC area is to be from a place where it's difficult to fit in anywhere else...

for me to say its hard to live on li would be difficult b/c i have no other place to compare it to. yes, the prices of houses are high, but its not like i'm in a position to up and move to PA or Jersey to buy a house.
we manage, but we rent right now and that is not always easy. would rent be cheaper off LI? hell yeah, but again, not something i would consider. manily b/c dh works for the LIRR and for him to commute from PA or even Jersey would be more expensive. and he loves what he does so to me its not fair to ask him to move.
I live in Jersey, and it's just as expensive (if not more in some places) than LI. As an example: DH and I pay 2x as much in property taxes as 97% of the MLS listings I see here.

i think its living in areas that have good school districts affordably or paying for private school the sales taxes are high the traffic is terrible, means sitting in your car more also - i think people are more in your face with money stuff - flaunting it- more "materialisim" in school, thus kids want more stuff - i know where i gre up labels were more important that values :( people usually have a pretty big commute into the city or over 30 miles
I agree on all counts.
Just as an example. DH & I went to 2 of his cousins' graduation parties. One lives in a very wealthy neighborhood upstate, and the other in a moderate one on LI. The upstate one was what you'd expect from a graduation party - friends & family, some SOs...nothing that big of a deal. The kids (oy how old am I) were dressed like 18 year olds. Nothing too flashy, but they all looked good. They were talking about where they were all going to school next year & a few of them were all going to the same school & hoping they got the same dorm, etc. They chatted about shopping for their dorms rooms & were talking about going to IKEA in Jersey the next day for stuff.
Now the party on LI - they all looked 40 & like they'd been around the block a few times. Half of them showed up stoned or already drunk from another party, and all of them were wearing all sorts of designer bags, jewelry, clothes & even their bathing suits. All of the girls were done to the nines, and the guys were very, um, aggressive with the girls. They were all constantly on their cell phones & bragging to each other about who got the best car for grad. When they were not bragging about their cars & clothes, they were bragging about their latest "conquest." This was in front of DHs aunt & uncle and a bunch of complete strangers. It was ridiculous.
It just seems to me the pressure to grow up here is so intense, and also that it is hard to just be a kid. As far as what I think makes it difficult for someone my age... double the taxes in less than 5 years, $300+ a month to commute by train, plus another $100 to park. Ridiculously high prices on everything, and the need to constantly use a car. Sitting in traffic all the time or long commutes keep you out of the house for up to 12 hours a day. It makes a lot of other things hard, and it is draining.

Re: Can someone tell me
The price of homes and taxes are the problem. Other costs of living here (such as auto insurance) don't help either, but it's difficult for a young couple to get the money together for a down payment on a house when they are already paying over a thousand a month on rent and the housing prices sky rocketed a few years ago.

For us: -We bought a very small house at the top of the housing boom (now it has slowed down and we would lose money if we sell) -Property taxes are high
My commute to NYC everyday is expensive

Re: Can someone tell me
Yeah, celebrations are different in less urban areas. My cousin got married in upstate New York, at a country club which I thought was very nice, but definitely a step or two down from most lavish catering facilities around here. She and her husband seemed happy, and they spent about 1/3 what I spent, or my sister on our LI and NJ weddings.
Yet, some of the NJ/NYC relatives were pretty critical of her wedding, the food, the location, etc. As I said, it was very nice, they didn't cut corners, but it wasn't at the same standard that people around here are used to in a wedding.
The outlook is different here, and not always in a good way.
