Re: Can someone tell me
Not for nothing but I think it is more difficult to live in suburbs of NYC such as Brooklyn, Queens, SI, etc. I mean fine, if you're working in the city, the commute is a little shorter, but come on...you cant find a decent affordable apartment to live in, the house are in horrendous shape, everything is waaaaay more expensive than on LI and the quality of life and your next door neighbors are not very favorable...I think for those of you that live out east should feel very fortunate. Thats just my honest opinion.

Re: Can someone tell me
honestly-its just the price of houses n the taxes-it is what it is. car insurance is sooo high too....n for what???
we live in queens, where the prices of houses are more-yet taxes are less-
i really dunno if i would want to live in L-and work JUST to live in LI, u know?
if we bought a house, there would be NO way to afford it-our salaries would both have to be TRIPLED.

I am still confused - you seem to be referring to NYC. this is a post about Long Island. Do you find Long Island to be filthy?
True but LI is so expensive because we pay to be near NYC. Look I said from the get go, I like LI. If NYC was some town like any other instead of a mecca (sp?) the taxes and prices on LI would not be as high.

Posted by SweetestOfPeas this JMO, but if you leave LI to go just about anywhere else in the US... when you come back, drive down the LIE, SS or any major road and look at all the trash on the side of the road.
I might get flamed for this - but i really think that the trash problem is more NYC than long island. I agree that certian parts of the LIE and Belt Pkwy, amongst others, have bad graffiti and trash problems, but I dont find this to be the case on long island.

True - but I am happy not to pay the NYC Income tax..... For me, what we save in income tax from not living in the city is way more than we pay in property taxes and our property taxes are HIGH!

Totally agree...and this is sooo true.
LI might have higher taxes but in my opinion, they are well worth paying...in comparison to NYC I'd rather pay the higher taxes than live where I live now...which is a good part of Queens but still...one day I'll join you!

If we are going to compare things, sure its worse in the city areas than LI but what if we compare the suburbs of here to the suburbs elsewhere that isnt outside such a large city.

One other thing I wanted to add and I might get flamed by NYC teachers but I personally would not send my kids to NYC public school...I'd rather take the money that I would spend on a private school tuition and put it towards taxes in a good neighborhood, have a nice house and send my kids to a good public school.

when was the last time you were on the LIE? the next time you're at a traffic light, take a look at the sides of the road. there is trash and cigarette butts everywhere. and I'm not just talking about the area I live in.

I was on the LIE yesterday! I am telling you - I dont see it. you see trash and graffiti on the LIE?
My town is ridiculously clean - cleaner than many other areas I have seen thru-out the country. I am definitely going to take a harder look to see if i notice it, but I really have not noticed it in the past.

Re: Can someone tell me
I feel like most people have to make considerable sacrifices to live here.
Homes, taxes and utilities are expensive, which means chances are, it takes two incomes to afford just the home...that's not even getting into vehicles & insurance, savings/retirement, house maintenance, medical costs, etc..

Side roads too. Jericho Tpke, Rte 110... there are flyers, cigarette butts, soda cans, etc.
I dont notice too much as I am doing 60mph down the highway but when there is traffic on the highways you see strips of tires and mufflers, nevermind the roadkill that makes me tear up as I drive by.

Look, I am not getting into a thing about this... you asked a question and I answered honestly. Whats the big deal? If you didnt want people to answer honestly, why ask in the 1st place?
And I asked a question, and you still skirted around the answer. What do clean streets, and rude New Yorkers have to do with anything?

Yes the homes in queens cost a lot more then the average homes on LI but I beg to differ about the houses being in horrendous shape. I live in Queens and so does all of my immediate family. Our homes are A LOT nicer then most of the homes on LI I see people post off of MLS on the home board.
And you can have unfavorable neighbors anywhere you live. The areas of queens where my family resides are beautiful and the neighbors are great.
Don't know what part of queens you are thinking of but there is good parts of queens and bad - same as LI.

Ummm yes I am answering it. You are asking why its difficult to live on LI. I said the frustration (for me) is hard to live with because we pay so much to live near a dirty city with rude people.

I live in a very good part of Queens and maybe I should have worded the "horrendous houses" part a little differently...I should have said that most houses in Queens are pretty old and "run-down" and for the amount of money they charge you for a one family house in Queens you can have a beautiful newer home (bigger and on a bigger property) in LI or upstate and of course out-of-state. As far as the neighbors go, yeah you're right, but as one of the earlier posts mentioned it, at least you have more space around your house and are further away from them...they're not peeking into your bedroom window
