I know you said aside from home prices and taxes, but honestly...I can't think of anything else.

I would say the home prices and taxes are it.
I don't understand what else is so difficult.
You make sacrifices wherever you live. Houses and taxes are cheaper elsewhere, but the jobs often pay less or municipal services are greatly reduced, or it could just be the price of moving away from family.
You said that perfectly!

For us it's because while our taxes/daycare/commute keep going up, our salaries do not.
Posted by MrsDiamondgrlie
Well I think its the frustration of paying all this money for homes and taxes for what??? Nasty people and filth.
Um, excuse me?
You think the city is clean and the people are sweet? I had to write my OP fast, I am at work and couldnt fully explain right away.
Are you speaking about the city or Long Island? I know that my town on Long Island, as well as the surrounding towns are extremely clean. Cleaner than many towns in many other areas of the country (and I have worked in many other areas for extended lengths of time).

Re: Can someone tell me
It is way more expensive to commute to the city from LI, than from the boroughs.
Lets say the BagHag family has a 2br coop in Queens, and the Joneses has a 2 br coop in Nassau county. Jones will need:
-at least one car (assuming he has a wife)
-gas for the two cars, plus insurance
-parking for those two cars, b/c they probably work in the city and need ot park at the LIRR
-LIRR monthly train pass, which could run $400 for both of them
-They probably also need metrocards, which will be $152 monthly, for both.
That's at least 1k a month for traveling that are an absolute necessity.

Re: Can someone tell me
prices of homes and high taxes!!! Depending on the area you have to pay a large sum of $ for a small home and very little land.
as some said having alot of family/friends around make it expensive (like for Dh and I) we will have attended 12 weddings by the end of 2006!!!
ETA But the large # weddings would never be a reason for us to want to leave LI though!! The main reason we couldnt leave is because we love being close to everyone here.

another argument I hear a lot of that people stay here for the great SD's. well guess what is happening, those kids get a great LI education and then move away b/c they can't afford to live here.

sure, most places have rush hour traffic. but it lasts an hour - hence the name.
traffic on the SS Pkwy starts at 2pm and doesn't end until 6:30-7pm.

to be from Long Island/NYC area is to be from a place where it's difficult to fit in anywhere else...
Couldn't agree more. I tried, I lived in Vermont and in San Diego. I wasn't comfortable- and I missed my family.
It's just expensive here, that's it. And it's expensive because of the copnveniences that make you like LI. So, well- it's a win-win or a lose-lose.

Re: Can someone tell me
Okay, so most people agree taxes and homes are expensive. Maybe we have no control over it, but you have to make the most of what you can afford. There are plenty of homes available. Most people just don't want to be in those "less than desirable" neighborhoods, even as starting points.
But as for keeping up with the Jones' you have control over that. Why do you have to compete with your neighbor? It's complete insecurity on your part if you need to. Everyone needs the best car, the best clothes, the most expensive wedding and their kid has to have the best birthday party. Everyone wants more, more, more. It's sad that people are so materialistic. But you can choose not to be. But let's face it, most people want to keep up with the Jones'
I love LI. I honestly don't see any major problems with it. Yes, things can be costly. But you just have to have priorities.

The SDs are OK, but honestly not much better than many in the tri-state area. There are a few excellent SDs but for the most part the SAT scores, percentage going to college, Regents scores, and AP classes offered are no different than other parts of NY, NJ, and CT.

Re: Can someone tell me
I agree about the traffic. Many LI drivers are MEAN too (ie. they speed up when you try to merge in, they honk if you don't start going the millisecond the light turns green, etc.).
Also in other parts of the country, people often seem friendlier. You drive down the street and people wave! I don't remember the last time anyone on my parent's street looked up when I drove past to wave (I do remember the last time I waved and felt like an arse when they didn't wave back!)

many people don't find it appealing to live in someone's basement apartment. there are almost no apt buildings here! and the few that exist, are $2000 a month in Nassau. what young person can afford that??

I know, I just don't know how the idea that the SDs here are the best ever got started. They aren't, and if people compared numbers they would see that.
I don't think it is necessary to go to the BEST school anyway, so it wouldn't make me stay here or leave, but I don't know how people can say no where else is as good.
