Can this really happen? Hospital mixes up babies after birth, give to wrong parents

Wrong babies given at birth

Can anyone tell me what safeguards hospitals USUALLY have to prevent this?

How do most LI hospitals, such as North SHore, prevent this? I heard they put bracelets on the babies as soon as they are born. Is this true?

This is scary!

OMGosh how scary.
Huntington Hospital, Mom, Dad, and baby all wear bracelets. Before the nurses leave the baby with you, they ask you to read the numbers on your bracelet and compare it to the baby's bracelet.
I'm glad they discovered the mistake, but, it is inexcusable!Chat Icon

I know when all 3 of mine were born they took all 3 bracelets and put them on all 3 of us (baby, me, DH) right there in the OR. They constantly checked our numbers. I couldn't imagine

Stony Brook also does the bracelets in the OR (DW had C-sections), plus the Lo-Jack. If the baby leaves the Maternity wing, the alarms start going crazy.

WINTRHOP uses bracelets and checks them every single time they give you the baby.

It really is scary. And it happens more often than you'd think. I forgot the statistic but it's really unbelievable.

Re: Can this really happen? Hospital mixes up babies after birth, give to wrong parents

Do the hospitals all put them on the baby in the OR< as soon as the baby is delivered?

And does it EVER come off, such as to wash the baby, etc?

Anyone know about North Shore and what they do? I would go there if I had a baby and this worries me after reading this story! Chat Icon

I had my girls at Winthrop and they put the braclets on right on the OR. However it is possible for them to slip off.

In this story both babies were circumcised at the same time and both of their bracklets fell off and were switched when put back on.

Thank goodness the error was detected quickly......I coudlnt even imagine......

I had a c-section and right away they put the bracelets on Me, DH and DD. Like an above poster said at Stony Brook they also have lo-jack that locks all the doors when we walked around the maternity ward. You can actually hear the doors click as we walked by. Also they constantly check the numbers everytime they take the baby or bring her back.

Southampton Hospital puts them on the leg and on the wrist so I guess there is less of a chance of them falling off. The only time they take them off is when they cut them when you sign that the baby you are taking is yours

Same at LIJ. DH, DS and I all had bracelets that had the same numbers and information. We had to keep them on at all times (including showers) because they matched them to the baby and could not show sign of being tampered with.

They put a security bracelet on you and the baby and they check it every time they bring the baby to you.

I do know that if someone unauthorized tries to take the baby out of the area, the whole floor shuts down.

OMG! That is crazy! They shouldn't be taking them off for any reason.

Thank God it was realized so quickly.

how scary!

Where I delivered they had the security bracelet incase the baby was taken from the floor.

And the baby and mommy had matching bracelets with a number. The nurses checked they matched when they dropped off the baby and the nurse had to tell the mommy the number when they picked up the baby.

As I understand it, the baby gets a bracelet in the delivery room as do mom and dad.

When you leave they check all three bracelets.

I know this is what they did for my SIL and Brother at Good Sam.

At North Shore they do this as well. It is a baby "lo-jack" security bracelet pout on the baby's ankle. However, my DD had chicken legs and it fell off ALL the time while we were there. They are very careful about it though and an alarm goes off when it comes off.

DSs bracelet was so tight at one point we actually had to ask them to loosen it. And one night while we were in our room, DS's alarm kept going off in the nursery. They came 2x to the room. Then they decided they needed to fix his alarm. The nurse wasnt wearing any ID so I made her go back and get it before I would hand her my baby.
Its just very scary!

The baby at Huntington doesn't even leave the delivery room or OR without the belly button beng lojacked... He/She immediately gets tagged and an anklet with the last name - I can't see any mix ups happening there - they are very vigilant!!

I delivered at SIUH, which is part of North Shore's health system now and this is what they did: Mom and Dad each get a bracelet on the wrist. They checked mine everytime they brought me the baby and they would check DH's if they handed him the baby, even if I was sitting right there. The baby got TWO bracelets. One on each ankle.

I believe he also had baby lojack on his belly button as well b.c I wanted to leave and it took a while to get it removed.

When we were leaving, they checked our bracelets before we left the maternity floor, then we were checked again before we left the hospital completely by a secuirty guard.

Re: Can this really happen? Hospital mixes up babies after birth, give to wrong parents

sadly this did happen but was corrected very quick. i remember a story of girls where they did not know for years and one of the girls past away. her family never got to know her. they said the braclets fell off. i know when i worked at stony brook and a baby was take 1 by 1 to have the procedure. why they had the 2 in the same area i can not uderstand. i am just glad to hear that they are with the right family
