OMGosh how scary.
Huntington Hospital, Mom, Dad, and baby all wear bracelets. Before the nurses leave the baby with you, they ask you to read the numbers on your bracelet and compare it to the baby's bracelet.
I'm glad they discovered the mistake, but, it is inexcusable!Chat Icon

Same at NSUH.

Do the hospitals all put them on the baby in the OR< as soon as the baby is delivered?

And does it EVER come off, such as to wash the baby, etc?

Anyone know about North Shore and what they do? I would go there if I had a baby and this worries me after reading this story! Chat Icon

I had a c-section at Winthrop. I had a bracelet on me while being checked in so did DH. They are 2 other bracelets matching ours ready for DS. It was put on him (both of them) on each ankle in the delivery room. They also put the "alarm" one in addition so it would trigger the alarm if he was removed off the premises.

There was no mistake DS was mine. I would have noticed if he had been switched. I knew how he looked like.

ETA: they checked DS bracelet and mine everytime he was moved out of the nursery at night to be BF (yep, checked every 3 hours!!!), then when DH would take him out of the nursery. Everytime they handed babies to their parents to make sure for some reason moms had not switched room.

At Winthrop we got a bracelet for both babies and they check them all the time. You also need to be swiped in if you are on the floor. (However one of my friends got onto the floor somehow when she was not suppose to be there).

They put a bracelet on each kid and they also had an electronic monitor on each ankel of the babies. However, my babies were so tiny that it kept coming off.

Where I live the baby gets a bracelet and an ankle bracelent. We have our babies with us all the time, they aren't taken away from us for a second. If you have to go to the toilet you can get a midwife to come and stay. We have our babies 24 hours a day while we are there.

this actually happened to my aunt. she had my cousin (boy) the same day a woman had her daughter. i'm not sure if it was the same day or the next but they brought her the wrong baby with the wrong tags. she said i had a son!! and what's even weirder is the fact that they live down the block from eachother. the kids were good friends growing up.

Something very odd happened to me at St Catherines when dd was born. I went into the nursery to see my dd "Gillian" and they told me here is your boy "Gilligan", he was just eating in the nursery with the other nurse. It was my dd but mistakes should not be made on identity.
