Insanity!!!! I just wrote out a check for $152 for 8 tickets for family. Our school does a lottery system with them so we hand in sealed envelopes and there is no waiting on line--that's crazy! I am dreading the day of the recital because they are doing 2 shows. One at 1pm and the other at 7pm. Thankfully the toddlers are the first 4 performances though....

And this is why I will be signing Alex up for dance, but through the classes offered through the township instead, at a whopping $25 for the entire season Chat Icon

DD has been asking if she can be a ballerina & I was planning to sign her up soon. Now I'm not so sure I want to! You mean to tell me that if I don't stand in line practically all night & I don't get tickets I won't even be able to see her dance?! That's insane!

So, we got the tickets finally...4 HOURS after my DH received our "number." Luckily, we could call in periodically to see what number they were up to.

As I understand it, everyone is guaranteed 6 tickets. I guess all the craziness was to get the best seats. Strangely, we ended up getting 6 tickets in the 2nd row off to the side (right where Katherine will be)...so what WTH?

And to address a couple of other things:

The studio is in Queens (but not Mildred Scilla--although I know several "grown" people that attended there!) and they are performing at Colden Center.

And yeah...the performance is at 7:30 PM!! My DD is in bed by 8pm ordinarily! These kids are 3 and 4 years old! A bit late, no??

Oh, well, I wonder if I should start getting on line NOW for next year's recital. Guess it's time to start looking for an air mattress. Chat Icon

YEP...Totally NORMAL!!!

My girls used to go to one of the larger dance schools on the island. But we switched last year to a smaller school....

HOWEVER...

Tickets went onsale this morning. An hour before they went onsale the line went around the building. It was insane..People had been there since before sunrise...

At the larger schools people camp out the night before...

I never care where I sit b/c you take the pics at the dress rehearsal anyway..

My bff went on line this morning at 3, and the tickets weren't going on sale until 9 (in Queens, not sure where youare).

And this year her DD has FOUR costume changes!!!

This is nuts!!

Ahh the fact that you are guaranteed tickets, just not where you sit, is good. I thought they would run out and you wouldn't get to see your DC perform. That makes more sense.

The line thing isn't anymore crazy than the pre-school, library and town swimming registrations Chat Icon

We waited on line this morning, but honestly it wasn't that bad. Tickets went on sale at 11 and I think we got there at 8:30. I know there were some moms that got there at 4, but I would never go that far.

I know my sisters do dance through the school, its very organized, very reasonably priced and tickets are not an issue and cheap.

my sister has been in dance for 8 years now (she's 10) and I was unaware of what recitals entailed until she was in dance. I didn't know the whole tradition of bringing flowers or a gift after the recital either and I got a Chat Icon from her one time!!Chat Icon
My niece's recital is in two weeks and my SIL just informed me it is 4 HOURS long. A little excessive for "spoonful of sugar" from Mary Poppins in my opinion. I understand what the recital means to the older girls that are in multiple forms of dance, but for the 3 year olds- Ridiculous. Can't wait= it better not be nice outChat Icon

This is Julia's 2nd year at dance, her costume is $65, the pic's price is based on how many you want, I always buy them all--lol
The tickets for the recital are $16 a person, I usually write a check out for the amount of people coming, then give the check to the dance manager, then they pick where everyone will sit, and there never bad seats, last year we were right in the front of the stage!

I can't believe your place makes you wait on a crazy line for tickets!! They need to get more organized!! Come to my place!Chat Icon

My neice is in dance, and now does competive dance too.. and has to get like 4 costumes!! Crazy $$$.. But at least she gets to wear them several times b/c of the competitions. My sis never mentioned having to deal with the ticket stuff. She always asked us if we want to go and seems to get the tickets.. I want to sign my dd up this fall at same place. All my sis said was the costumes were kinda $$ but the actual classes werent so bad at this age, its the competition dance that is costly.

Wow that's crazy. I remember taking dance for 6yrs at a place in Manhattan when I was little. I do remember the craziness when prepping for recitals and the final recital was always at an auditorium at a school, but nothing like you described. I know for sure my mother never stood in line to get tickets.

Quite honestly, I think it's ridiculous. Ava, thank god, was in a non-recital class this year, but seeing everyone else waiting for tickets at our studio made me second guess whether or not I want to have her signed up for next year. First of all, the price of costumes is insane. Yes, it's the norm for costumes, but I still think it's waste. Secondly, I don't want to have to sit through like forty other numbers of kids that I don't even know just to see my 3 year old not dance while four others are rolling on the floor and two are actually doing the routine. Call me a dance scrooge, but it's too over the top for this mom.

I absolutley agree! I love to dance, I did so through college, but that is pure insantiy for kids that have only been walking for a couple of years! LOL. Serioulsy, $25 per ticket is ridiculous. If you sign your child up to dance the recital should be free. I'm not going to pay $100 plus the cost of the costume to watch hundreds on uncoordinated little girls look cute on stage and jump up and down and call that a routine. Sorry if this seems a little rough, but almost $200 for a night when you've already paid hundreds for them to go to class is crazy! Plus, i think many of the costumes kids wear today are completely inappropriate for their age.

I'm kind of out of the loop with this stuff, but Chat Icon that's just nuts!!

I took ballet when I was younger and the costumes were $$$. I remember when I was older, than your DD even, about 5 my mom being mad the recital STARTED at 8 and went for a few hours.

I know-thank God for the lottery system! I just wrote a check out for close to 280 dollars for tickets for my family and my husbands-sucks to have divorced parents since I have 2 sets! I remember tickets being 7 dollars when I danced! Now they are 19 at her school. I pay 37/week tuition, 75 for her costume, multiple shoes throughout the year, tights, etc...

I'm with both of you!!! My oldest danced for one year (she was 4) and after I saw it was all about the recital, I was done. It was all to "Hollywood" for me and I too think its ridiculous the way some of these litle girls are dressed. What a horrible message to send.

If I could have found a school that taught dance for the sake of dance, as well as many different forms of dance, I might have felt differently. I'm from the invite the parents to the studio, put on a urn of coffee and lets watch them dance school. Unfortunately, not many others seem to agree.

My oldest, now 11, plays sports. Although I was never athletic as a child, I can't believe how wonderful I feel sports are for girls. The girls, whether they are good or bad, learn life lessons that are hard to replicate in other arenas.

Now my youngest loves the bling and has asked to dance. So far I've been able to put her off with the promise of acting classes (in addition to the sports she's already playing). From what I hear there are no lines to buy tickets for performances and I'm just more comfortable with the idea of a theatrical production as opposed to a recital.

I know which dance school you are talking about! My sister danced there for years and guess who always got to CAMP OUT OVERNIGHT for tix!! At first, my friends and I thought it was fun, but after a while...horrible!! There didn't used to be a 6 ticket limit though..so it used to get ugly! Such craziness for a children's recital!!
