Re: Can you girls tell me seriously
I buy what I want because I make a decent living for myself and also my DH makes a good living and he owns his own business so he can afford to buy very nice stuff for me.

I am right there with you. I didn't recognize some of the names. I make good money but can not justify spending a paycheck or two on bags, shoes & clothes when I can use it for something else.
I am with you Deb, it is not what you wear, but how you wear it!

Re: Can you girls tell me seriously
I used to buy designer stuff when I worked and got them as gifts... I always frequented the sample sales when I lived in the city.. That is why I have 12 Kate Spade bags collecting dust at the moment
Once you have children, your entire prospective changes on designer clothing and even getting stuff for yourself.. It is not worth it anymore.. our money is spent on my son and that is the way i like it... I do only buy on sale but I will say his wadrobe is better than mine now!!!!
For instance-- for the $500 I spent on bags I could put that money away for college, save it to pay for his toddler program ( which cost thousands) or even camp or something.. or even buy him a wadrobe for that amount of money...
His well being is more important than any Kooba bag, LV or Manolo shoes any day....

Not trying to knock Payless or anything in between. I'm just saying I would rather have a few nice things rather than a ton of stuff I'll never use.
And the saying is true, you get what you pay for. I have two coats, a Burberry and Kenneth Cole. Both are nice, but I have gotten compliments on the Burberry because it is made better and fits better than the Kenneth Cole. And it is not obvious who either one is made by. It's just a nicer coat and will last longer because it is made better.
But some people like to have a whole bunch of coats, a white one, pink, purple, whatever. I just need 2, a black and a camel, that's it. So why can't I spend more money on it??
My SIL loves to have everything match. Shoes, bag, coat, everything. She is able to remember that she has a pink bag to go with her pick sweater. I can't remember stuff like that. It gets thrown into the abyss of my closet and never seen again. Her way makes her happy. My way makes me happy.
What's wrong with that??
not sure, but this is a digression from my OP. I just asked HOW everyone affords these things, no WHY they need to do it.
everyone likes nice things...I was just curious how they come about them.
I didn't address the "right or wrong" of it in my OP, and since I don't think it matters, I don't care about it all that much.

Ok. HOW I buy them is by not buying a lot of stuff that I won't use. That is HOW I buy them. The money that I would waste buying 10-20 bags I use to buy 5 bags. That is HOW I buy them.
I was just responding to your response lecturing about how those of us who spend money on these things are just paying for the name. You addressed the right and wrong of it in your response to me.

Re: Can you girls tell me seriously
I can't spend that much on bags. I love a good bag, but I can't spend more than $250.
I bought two longchamp bags a few years ago, but I used them till I couldn't anymore-I work for Coach now, so I have to use their bags.
So now I buy only coach bags. I love them, plus I get an insane discount!

Re: Can you girls tell me seriously
I know someone who has soooooooooo many bags it is insane, and shoes too. prada, gucci, all that. she says they never go out of style, so it is worth it.
I look at the closet she has dedicated to all these bags, and I have seen her use maybe 5 of them. so, if you add up all of them it is very depressing. if she invested that money instead, she sould have a very nice amount of money for her daughter to go to college one day, or for retirement.

exactly...and they are about as clear as your need to justify why you spend so much.
moving right along........
I have been thinking about treating myself to an expensive piece, but I am not sure if it should be a watch or a purse....
what do you ladies think is more worth the investment?

A watch is a very good investment also. I would say go for the watch even though I love bags but a watch is a very good investment.

Re: Can you girls tell me seriously
I guess I probably shouldn't even be chiming in here since I don't really own designer anything but I'll speculate. I think there is a 2 part answer to this question:
1. I think that the "how" comes down to priorities. People prioritize different things in their lives. If you prioritize buying a house, for example, all your money will go there and you'll do everything you can to buy your house. If you prioritize owning designer items, you will put your money towards that.
2. They just make the money for it. Plain and simple. Because if you already have the house, and the kids, and the car (if that's what you want), and still have the money to drop $1k on a purse or shoes, then obviously, you have the money.

I'd say go for the watch. Is it a piece you'll wear often? A piece you love?
Most handbags can be purchased much cheaper, whether it's on ebay, consignment, sales. I'm all for pre-loved...I mean pre-owned!!!
Is there a handbag that you've been eyeing?

Re: Can you girls tell me seriously
I would go for a watch, I wear a watch everyday so it would be a good investment. I love bags too, but usually try to get them cheaper or on sale. I also think there is a difference between expensive to people. Some people will spend hundreds on shoes, I won't, I've never spend more than $100 on them. Some people will spend $500 plus on bags, I've never spent more than $200 but would probably spend up to $300 or so. The only bag I have that costs more than that DH bought me when we were dating.

Re: Can you girls tell me seriously
personally I dont buy these things all the time, my DH will get them for me on occasions, or I will invest in a good bag or pair of shoes here&there(not often these days!!) when I really LOVE or need them. I agree with the idea that it's an investment-1 good pair of shoes for say $200 will last longer & be a better quality & more comfy than say 10 cheapies for $20 each! Plus ebay, century 21, daffys have great deals. And certain things I just refuse to pay full price for!

DH is a good man and has bought me alot of my things, I think a pair of shoes and good bag make whatever you are wearing...and I dont have kids to spend it on so why not. I also stash my moula so can get that bag/pair of shoes if I really NEED them. In moderation of course.

Re: Can you girls tell me seriously
I don't buy very expensive items. DH and I just don't have that kind of money left over after all is said and done. It's nice to dream, but like I asked my kosher boss once "you have never had a bacon cheeseburger?" His response was, "if you have never had it, you don't miss it." I guess it is sort of the same when it comes to expensive items......

If it makes you feel better, I didnt recognize some of the names you posted and that is probably because I would never purchase any of them either!
I work hard and dont even make enough to come close to purchasing a bag that would eat up one whole paycheck nor buy shoes that would do the same.
I'm with you Deb. I think I'm all fancy with my Calving Klein coat that I bought at on sale at Syms.
I have one Coach bag that my parents bought me as a college graduation present & I still use it. The most I ever spent on a bag myself was about $80 & I thought that was crazy! It was some Italian name I had never heard of but it was nice leather & a nice shape & about 70% off at a sidewalk sale!
I don't buy thigns for the name. I realize that you have to spend a little more for well made items sometimes, but those are things I buy at Filene's basement, Loehmann's & Syms.
ETA- Dh would never even think to buy something designer for me as a gift! He wouldn't know where to begin & he'd think it was silly. He'd rather spend money on travel, technology or maybe jewelry ( if he had a little direction)

Personally for me, I think a watch is a much better investment. I nice, classic watch can be worn year round and looks great with everything. (Although I know some would have the same argument for a good bag). I buy far more bags than I do watches, so I think I'd get more use for my $$ out of a good watch.

I completely agree. However, I do buy myself one nice thing now from time to time. Sometimes, DH will buy me something nice as well. It is definitely not as often as before the house and DD, but I like it that way. More $$ for retirement, DD's education, and we are almost debt free. JMHO, Piece of mind is more important to me now as we live beneath our means.
