car maintenance
I have 12k miles on my car its a 2014. I just spent $680 for a freakin oil change ( yearly maintenance )
I just received a call from the dealership telling me I need new brakes and the cost is $1800!!!
GTFO!!
Ive been using their loaner car this week when I dropped off my car for the oil change and told them I'll be by tomorrow morning to pick up my car and that Im not prepared at this time to replace the brakes.
my question is, being that my car is certified, do I have to go to the dealership for brakes? What about the oil change? I dont want to void the warranty. Anyone have any experience with this?

Re: car maintenance
I own my 2006 car and just had a lot of work done on it : oil change (synthetic 6 quarts), new brakes and rotors, new tires, new alternator.
That quote for new brakes is INSANE . I didn't spend that TOTAL for all that was done to my car. Hubby takes my car to Whitestone Auto on the Cross Island and 149th street. I, as a woman, feel comfortable with them, not that I am getting ripped off. Hubby feels the same way.
Can't help you with the warranty, I'm long past that.

Re: car maintenance
https://www.consumer.ftc.gov/articles/0138-auto-warranties-routine-maintenance
Do I have to use the dealer for repairs and maintenance to keep my warranty in effect? No. An independent mechanic, a retail chain shop, or even you yourself can do routine maintenance and repairs on your vehicle. In fact, the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act, which is enforced by the FTC, makes it illegal for manufacturers or dealers to claim that your warranty is void or to deny coverage under your warranty simply because someone other than the dealer did the work. The manufacturer or dealer can, however, require consumers to use select repair facilities if the repair services are provided to consumers free of charge under the warranty.
Federal law says you can use whatever registered repair shop you want for repairs, and still maintain your warranty coverage.

Is it a german car? Brakes and rotors on my Audi are about $700-800 each for front/back.

Re: car maintenance
You do not need to go to the dealer. Just save your receipts from any registered mechanic for the work you are having done.
As a matter of fact, DH just leased a car and specifically asked if he can do his own oil changes. They said yes, absolutely, just save the recepits for the filters and oil. So you don't even need to use a mechanic . He does most work himself. And this is on a lease where you'd think they'd be more strict.
DH has done ALL the work on our cars when we owned. Brakes, spark plugs, etc. He even did things like timing belts, water pumps, etc. And we never had a problem with our warranties.

Re: car maintenance
Don't trust the dealership and that is an awful a lot of money for brakes and even an oil change. I am assuming the oil change is more than just the oil change.
I took my car into the dealership to get something fixed under my warranty. They told me I needed new brakes and rotors for one of my sets. I found this hard to believe since I just got my brakes done barely a year ago and I had just gotten an oil change and they told me that I had about 50% of my brakes left.
So I told them no and took it to my mechanic and sure enough, I did not need what they were trying to tell me I needed!!
ETA: my car is under warranty I never take my car there for any maintenance.

It's doubtful that you need new brakes yet unless you are doing a ton of stop and go. Take it to a real mechanic and see what they say

DH does all the brakes on our cars unless the maintenance is included in the lease (my Jeep wasn't, my Lincoln is). Unreal what they charge. You can definitely go somewhere cheaper and I doubt you truly even need them done at this point.

This. I find the dealer is a rip-off. I hate the service department at the dealer I got my car from (taking your car for an oil change will literally take all day) so I go to my own trusted auto mechanic.

Re: car maintenance
Depending upon the car, an oil change is $19-50. If you only drove 6,000 miles what kind of annual maintenance did you have done? What kind of car do you drive? Brakes should not cost that much unless you drive a mazeratti, Ferrari, or other 150,000 car.

Just for fun, I looked up the cost of brakes for a Ferrari... this is what an actual Ferrari owner paid for brand new pads and rotors on his Ferrari (most cars don't need new rotors... that adds a lot of expense to the job)
http://jalopnik.com/heres-what-it-cost-me-to-own-a-ferrari-for-a-year-1669923931
At that point, it was due for another oil change, and the dealer recommended changing the front brake pads and rotors — for a total cost of $1,754.45.
So... it would cost less to replace brakes and rotors, plus an oil change on a Ferrari!

There had to be more done than an oil change. I would love to see the breakdown of what was done on the receipt for that price

This should cost like $75 l, no joke. We just paid for the oil in my new car and it was about that much.

Re: car maintenance
There is no way you paid $600+ for an oil change? even yearly maintenance (all new filters, tire rotation etc). Ask for a detailed summary of what you paid for, because that's ridiculous. $1800 for brakes, is just nuts, run, don't walk from that place and never go there again! Brakes should be done around 40k miles, so unless you ride the break every time your driving, there's no way they need replacing.

Re: car maintenance
Yes ask for a break down- of what they did and the cost of each part and their hourly labor rates. Because this sounds like highway robbery!
