Car Seat Questions - Expiration Dates? Contracts?

I bought a Britax Boulevard yesterday... baby won't use it until after he's 30pounds and outgrows the Infant Carrier.

Is there any reason I should have bought an $80 contract on the car seat??

It's not like it's electronic, so I passed on it. Should I have bought it?

ETA: Can someone explain the "expiration dates" on car seats? What exactly does that mean?

I don't think there is any reason..just keep in mind that that seat is only good for 5 years from now...

What do you mean? It's for babies up to 70 pounds starting at about 7lbs. Technically, we could use it right from infancy, but we're going with the infant carrier for convenience and so we don't have to disrupt the baby.

yes car seats expire. usually 5 years from the date of manufacture (not purchase). This is because the plastic can warp and degrade, the straps and wears and the foam will start to breakdown.

No its not law, but its in place as to not compromise the safety of your child bc the plastic weakens and breaksdown - your DC will probably outgrow the Blvd and go to a booster carseat anyway before that happens even though the weight goes up to 70lbs. Kids we usually surpass the seated shoulder height recommendations for the carseat.

Yes, as others have said, they all expire after a certain timeframe for safety reasons. The britax seats have a ex. date right on the carseat or at least a manufacture date so you can see when it expires.

Also, I'm 99% sure you won't be using an infant carrier when your child is 30lbs. My son is almost 3 and still 28lbs and has been in his convertible carseat since 9 months old. Chances are you will be using the boulevard sooner than you think and will not need it after the expiration date.

Thank you! I think our baby boy will use the Britax pretty soon, too.

At what age do kids generally start using the booster seat? I know the laws change seemingly weekly for this, but hopefully I'll get good use out of these VERY pricey car seats.

Thanks for all the info!

Re: Car Seat Questions - Expiration Dates? Contracts?

Car seats do have an expiration on them. It is not 5 years. Please look at the individual seat that you purchased. Some Britax seats have an 8 year expiration on them.

Look at the seat and you will find that date.
