Carpenter ants-
I had them last year when I had my new front door put on, my door was off for about 10 hours that day. Low and behold ants. I rid of them go crazy with the ant traps- terro, and spray. I have not seen any in a year. We come in last nite from dinner and I am greeted by 1 big one on my kitchen floor. I step on it and scream. I get out the bug spray and there are 5 more. I have the heebie jeebies now. I am really screaming. We kill them. I get out the Ortho Home defense spray , I spray every nook and crany of the kitchen. I was up every 2 hours last night making sure I do not see them. Not one ant. Should I keep spraying? Should I spray every few days? Put down the ant traps again as a just in case? I do not live with bugs- my home is clean. I am FREAKED. I go from carpenter bees outside my house to this. I am going to be sick. DH is from Brooklyn- so this is all new to him.

Re: Carpenter ants-
Are you sure they are carpenter ants? A lot of times they may just be regular pavement ants. Carpenter ants are HUGE, ranging from a quarter inch to a full inch.

Anyways, I wouldn't spray because it doesn't remove the underlying problem (the next). If you want to DIY you need to bait.
I used Terro traps earlier this year and it worked very well. You have to place them near the entrance to where they are entering the house.

Re: Carpenter ants-
I hear you! I hate bugs! I grew up in levittown (slab house) never a bug, only spiders (which are sorta okay with me). So, i move here to a house with a basement and neighbors freakin' trees and I see carpenter ants. Well, 2-3 seasons of that and we found a leak behind my upstairs bath. We fixed it, and they are gone. Now, all i have to deal with are the little itty-bitty ants that love my cat's food! don't know an effective way to get rid of these.

I needed to get an exterminator. Even if you don't see them, they may be in your walls and they eat the wood like termites. We have someone call 4 times a year to take care of them. It stinks but It is the only way I really got rid of them.
