Re: Catholic Mommies: Are you giving up meat for Lent?

I hope this doesn't come off as a rude question but do you girls eat meat every single day? I don't see the harm in cutting it out from one day a week. . .

I am not judging, if you don't want to give it up - its 10000000% personal choice, I am just curious how it can be seen as harmful.

I've always been taught that pregnant women are exempt from this so I don't think anyone should feel guilty for not strictly abiding. I actually will try to follow it but if my body craves red meat on a Friday (as it has been, perhaps due to the anemia), I will have it.

As for fasting, I'd be surprised if any OB gave that the OK even just for one day...

I do think that pregnant women are exempt from it. No one should ever feel guilty - even not pregnant, its all about personal choice!

I was just curious because sometimes, I don't eat meat all day without even realizing it (maybe pizza for lunch and then potatoes and eggs for dinner for example). And I can go WEEKS without touching red meat. So that is why I was asking.

I agree- I am usually turned off by meat anyway since getting pregnant.
So I don't even feel no meat on Friday would be a sacrafice for me- so I guess it kind of defeats the purpose of sacrafice ...since I enjoy pizza, pasta, etc more.

Re: Catholic Mommies: Are you giving up meat for Lent?

I'll be abstaining from meat today and all Fridays during Lent, per usual, but I won't be fasting and will continue my normal eating routine (I'm currently 'under weight' and need to eat more).

But I'm curious about something, and perhaps one of you can clarify. I thought that you were required to abstain from meat on Fridays only during Lent, not the rest of the year now, as opposed to the past when you couldn't have meat on any Friday of the year. But according to this canon in the catechism (Canon 1251), it sounds like you are supposed to abstain from meat all year long on Fridays.

Anyone know the answer to that?

I know that outside of the US, Catholics are still abstaining from meat all year long. My family (in the US) also does this. I follow this but will break it if we are going out to eat but I won't cook meat on a Friday. I was always told that in the US, you could eat meat on the other Fridays of the year. I am not sure where that is actually written, or maybe it is just accepted now.

Oh I'm totally with you. Prepregnancy I could go weeks without eating red meat but this includes poultry which I think is much harder. When I was PG with DS, I followed the no meat rule (except once when I had no other choice) but this time, I've been sick and have to just go with whatever I want or can stomach at the time. And my cravings much of the time has been for meat so I'm just going with what my body needs this time Chat Icon

I will also give up eating meat for today and every Friday during lent! I have been good about "snacking". I only crave fruit, like cantelope and watermelon and pineapple, so not eating a lot of junk food is what I'm giving up for lent anyway! Now watch, I'll start craving that stuff now! LOL

Crashing from TTC I went to Catholic school and meat was never served in the cafeteria on Fridays. Technically, I think we are not supposed to eat meat on Fridays year round, and then not at all for all 40 days of Lent. This is how my grandparents do it, but I guess over time it has relaxed b.c I do Fridays during Lent only. Also, my mom always taught me that we get a dispensation on St. Patrick's day. Chat Icon

Re: Catholic Mommies: Are you giving up meat for Lent?

I most likely wont be eating meat on Fridays. I eat veggie burgers a lot anyway, so I will probably just have those for lunch on fridays and pizza for dinner. I forgot today was ash wednesday but I brought a veggie burger with me anyway so I lucked out.

I don't follow man-made "rules". Just my beliefs. So, no, I won't be giving up anything.

EXACTLY how I feel. I follow the ways that I believe God would want me to follow--not what the Vatican SAYS I should do in order to be a good Catholic. Chat Icon

ETA: I never actually answered the question Chat Icon I will not be giving up meat for Lent.

Re: Catholic Mommies: Are you giving up meat for Lent?

Nope I am not fasting or dropping meat. I need to follow the gestational diabetes diet (i passed but was a borderline) and there is no way I can do it without meat since I can't have any heavy carbs.

I won't be fasting today or on Good Friday, but I will be giving up meat today and for Fridays during Lent. As noted, pregnant women ARE exempt from this, but I am going to try it anyway.

I was never big on red meat anyway, but now that I'm pregnant, I love red meat so it will be harder to give up. I also need to limit my carbs, so depending on how things go, i will try to abstain from meat but can't say I will be able to stick to it 100%.

Re: Catholic Mommies: Are you giving up meat for Lent?

NO meat on Fridays but I TOTALLY forgot today....whoops!!!!! Chat Icon

To answer the posted question, I don't see the problem giving it up ONE day a week...to me there is no exemption unless you want to use it to your benefit or medically need to do so, not that I think one day a week would kill anybody...

They say children under a certain age are exempt too....my parents threw that out the window...we had pizza or fish on Fridays my whole life! Chat Icon

since I already labeled myself a bad Catholic whose going to try to remember not to eat meat, I'll answer this one. Chat Icon

I do eat meat just about every day, which is why it's easy to forget. Growing up, my mother never enforced the no meat on Fridays rule so this doesn't come naturally to me, although she follows it now.

I didn't start seriously following lent until I lived with my DH, but instead of becoming a better Catholic with him I've turned him into a bad Catholic with me.

Fasting is something I just can't get into.

When I was preg with DS last lent, yes I did abstain from meat on Ash Wednesday & Fridays- I had tuna fish, snow crab legs, cooked sushi, pasta, pizza, veggie burgers, etc.. there's plenty to eat!

yes, actually, I do.

You are required to do something on all Fridays throughout the year- not eating meat CAN be one of those sacrifices, but doesn't have to be.

Basically every Friday is supposed to be treated like a mini- Good Friday and every Sunday like a mini-Easter... So therefore on Fridays we are supposed to abstain from something to become mindful of Jesus' suffering on the cross and death...

This can be, for example, saying the rosary, extra prayer, doing charity work or almsgiving, or abstaining from red meat.

I don't think it's harmful AT ALL. In fact, I'd probably be healthier if I ate less meat in general. I suppose for those with GD it may be, but for the most part I'm perfectly normal, boring and healthy. Chat Icon
