Re: CDC Guidelines for Opening School

Isnt South Korea, China and other Asian countries already doing something similar? What is the big deal? Life is not going to be anywhere back to normal until this virus is completely eradicated globally, whether through herd immunity or a vaccine. No, schools are not going to be fun places for these kids but these restrictions are the only way to ensure safety.

It's unlikely the virus will ever be eradicated and I don't want my kids being educated in a freak!ng prison. I have no desire to live like China or South Korea, do you???? These guidelines are insane and hopefully the majority of parents speak out against this if they try to implement such absurdity.

Can you imagine sticking a kindergartener behind glass in a mask and tell them they can't talk to anyone, socialize, run on a playground and hug their teachers? Saddest thing I can ever imagine for my kids. And I wholeheartedly disagree with you, school should be fun and some of the best years of a kids life. This type of environment isn't healthy for them, especially the younger they are.

Spot on. If there is no socialization, then I might as well keep them home. I can't even believe people think this new reality is acceptable. DH and I have talked about it and we're going to be disenrolling the kids from school. I can pay for someone to come to the house to teach them. So technically they will be home schooled, but I won't be the one teaching. Going to start looking out of state because it seems silly to pay these taxes when we're not utilizing the schools. We were already on the fence, but this is all we needed to see to make the decision.

It's funny because DH and I have been wanting to move the hell out of this state for a long time now. We always say if it wasn't for DD we'd be there already. But we didn't want to pull her out of school at this age and rip her away from her friends etc. So we were waiting for her to finish High School.
But if she isn't going to be able to actually go to school and actually see her friends...well what's keeping us here then?
She can remote learn from anywhere. So why not make that anywhere a place with lower taxes, a better governor, better weather and a better quality of life?

Exactly, might as well have a better quality of life. I've always heard that the schools in cheaper areas are bad. That coupled with less family being around has always been enough to keep us here. These new school guidelines change everything though. After talking with my siblings and close cousin, it seems we're all on board to move. We all have jobs that are either easily transferred or have remote office options. None of us would take a loss in salary (except my cousin, but she wants to be a SAHM anyway). It makes sense to do it now. I know we won't get what we wanted for the house right now, but the savings of moving to a cheaper area evens out.

That list is insane! It would just be cheaper and easier to get the kids into hazmat suits.

China flattened their curve much faster than other countries who were faced w/ similar outbreaks, and considering they are reporting less than 10 new cases per day for the past month or so, I'd say whatever they are doing is working..So for me, I would be fine with those restrictions if it guarantees the virus transmission rates are at an all time low. But thats just me.

I also don't see how moving to another state is going to solve this issue because other state school systems may be enacting the same type of restrictions. I think until we have more data about how restrictive these guidelines need to be in order to reduce transmission rates, we can't assume that being more lax w/ the guidelines means the threat levels remain the same. We just don't know and right now, we have the summer months to really study other countries' school setups to see if it works/worked.

Because many will home school or use remote online learning platforms rather than subject their children to this nonsense. And that can be done from anywhere

Exactly, there's a reason millions of people leave those countries to come to the USA. I hope parents speak out, but unfortunately we can't rely on that.

There are NO guarantees in life.

I won't let my kids be subjected to that kind of ridiculous learning environment. No way.

We aren't moving to utilize the public schools elsewhere. It's to avoid paying insane school taxes that we will no longer be benefiting from. I'll pay a private teacher to teach my kids. I can use the $20k+ I'll be saving in taxes to pay that teacher.

CDC Guidelines for Opening School

China also literally boarded up doors & windows to keep people in their homes. I do think precautions need to be taken, I do not believe we can go back to the way school was. But 3 year olds wearing masks all day?? My youngest DD is almost 4, and she would NEVER. Just wouldn't happen, and she is not a defiant child. It just isn't age appropriate.
I will go back to what I said before, being so nonchalant about schools being like prisons all in the name of stopping anyone from getting Covid is sad. Because children are already socially & emotionally breaking down over this. After putting them through that, you turn school into a jail? I am wondering if any politician will ever realize that protecting everyone from ever getting covid is causing a slew of other serious problems.

Yeah holding up China as the gold standard for handling anything is downright scary. Try living there. See how you like it.

I believe in ny state parents have to provide at least 51% of instruction if their children are homeschooled.

Same. I see no need to pay these absurd taxes anymore for the joke that is distance learning or part time school or whatever other ridiculous nonsense they come up with. I could live like a baller outside NY for what I pay in school taxes alone. Might as well get nicer weather and better quality of life while I'm at it. And if schools are closed all over the country then at least I won't be paying thousands for some worksheets and youtube links like they expect us to. And they have the nerve to tell us to expect a tax hike for distance learning. GTFO. If schools go this route next year then I can see a big shift across the island. They closed schools in March and moved everything online due to an emergency. Fine. But 6 months is enough to come up with solutions. This is inexcusable. I've wanted out for a long time anyway.

I feel for them. We moved out of NY last summer, my kids had to switch schools twice since we rented for a few months before buying again. They were in their new, permanent school for just 2 weeks before all of this happened. They never got to make friends or settle into the school and now they'll go back in September with this potential bullsh!t. It's going to be so horrible for them, it's so upsetting to me.

They can audit you, with hours and such. I’ve spent years researching homeschooling though, and it’s frustrating that people think there’s nothing to it. There’s laws, and regulations. You have to submit letters of intent, and quarterly submission of goals, progress, and work. For the most part, homeschooling parents (not distance learning parents) are some of the most passionate people I know, and work tirelessly to ensure their children are educated to their fullest potential.

at this point I hope they come out with vaccine ASAP so every ones that is willing to take it will and then everything can go back to normal!

I wont quote everyone but there can be guidance but these are unrealistic.

Also where are guidelines during flu season??? There are none but it was ok then to just go to school!! what about when all other outbreaks happened those are ok to just to send out kid!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (yes I am clearly over it all )

why do you think a vaccine will help the situation? People get flu shots all the time and people still get the flu.

I think these guidelines are out because with the flu shot, getting the shot lessens (usually not always) the severity if you do get the flu and because there are known, FDA approved treatments such as Tamiflu for the flu, right now COVID is a crapshoot in terms of transmission, vaccination and treatment efficacy. I’m hoping that research will plow ahead and there will be a known treatment as is Plasma treatment but again, research is still in process. I’m 100% pro vaccine but in terms of vaccines If they came out with a covid vaccine tomorrow I would 100% NOT give to my child at all without long term data to show risk/ benefit.
I don’t think these guidelines are realistic (some maybe can be done...) but I just wanted to comment on why I think these guidelines are out now rather than when we have flu cases.
We were paying for a private school for my twins preschool, next year for the pre-k program we are pulling them out, I’ve done a ton of research on curriculum and education was actually my first degree before switching careers so I feel fairly confident in teaching. The biggest thing for me is the masks. I’m 100% pro mask but my one twin has sensory processing disorder and can’t even wear a t-shirt, would literally live in one set of pajamas for a year if I let him, we try daily to practice with the mask and he can’t tolerate it. I feel for him because as long as masks are in use he can’t go anywhere Chat Icon

Everyone speaking of moving on this thread is doing it to no longer use the public schools.
To home or online school....just in a better state than NY.
Why stay here and pay these taxes, deal with this governor and this shit weather...it's freezing this mornings and it's almost June!... if you aren't going to be using the schools .

Eta...my friend's son in Florida goes to a public, online school, certified by the state. He is taught online by real teachers...she doesn't have to teach him at all.
He started the beginning of this school year prior to this disaster.
There are options like that available and if going that route you can live anywhere

I don't think all schools in areas with lower taxes are bad. I know folks who send their kids to school in states with lower taxes and I feel that their kids are getting a better education than mine are when we discuss curriculum. And they have newer, more updated schools with lots of features more conducive for learning.

We are back and forth on moving as DH is back and forth on retiring. If he retires next year we will probably leave. If he works longer, we will stay.

Re: CDC Guidelines for Opening School

I actually think these guidelines are fine. I made a similar list when I was talking to friends about how they could reopen schools. Everyone on here is going crazy about this but this would not be forever. These would be mostly temporary measures to reopen school. I think the masks might be the only thing that is a little tricky, and depending on the size of the classroom they might not be able to space the desks all exactly 6 feet apart but they could space them out as much as possible. We all grew up sitting at desks in rows facing forward for the most part and we all turned out fine. Also, I went to catholic school K-8. We had no gym so we had half assed phys ed in the cafeteria and we ate lunch and had recess in the classrooms when the weather was bad. It wasn't the end of the world. I don't think anyone wants this to be the guidelines FOREVER, just the temporary guidelines until they have a handle on things. If our kids have to go to school like this for a few months to a year it's really not the end of the world. Kids are very resilient.

Re: CDC Guidelines for Opening School

Posted by lululu

I would rather these rules than not going to school at all. It just sounds so sad.
