Did everyone change every lock when they moved in?
Thanks!

Re: Changing Locks
We changed our locks. I bought all new ones the night before our closing.

Re: Changing Locks
I have changed two locks, one on our backdoor because we replaced the door and one on our side door because it wasn't working properly. We have lived in our house for almost 3 years and we still haven't changed the garage or front door. Haven't had a problem.

Re: Changing Locks
We changed them about 3 weeks after closing...once we actually moved stuff in.

Re: Changing Locks
This is the first thing we did. Not only do you not trust the prior homeowners but think of all the contractors and family that might have that key!
We were glad we bought a full tool set for that too. We needed to drill holes, sand, measure, etc.
You will get a set of coupons when you get your change of address forms from the post office. Wait till you get the Home Depot coupon - if they still do it, it's 10% - and then buy the things on your list of purchases for a new home. Toilet seats, tools, locks, paint, plungers, etc. Consider opening a HD credit card at the same time and you could save another 5% I think - or 10?

Re: Changing Locks
absolutely, on all the doors...Since a contractor owned our house before us & did all the work, we never knew who had a key...we even added some other locks too!

Re: Changing Locks
One of the first things we did. The property was a rental for years, so we had no idea how many people could have had the keys....

Re: Changing Locks
We changed the locks before the sellers were done moving out. It was a horror story and we basically had to lock them out of the house.

Re: Changing Locks
ABSOLUTLY!!!!!! this was one thing i was CRAZY about!!!! mainly b/c the ppl who owned our house before us didnt actually live there... they just bought the house as an investment & re-did the whole inside... so WHO KNOWS how many ppl had a key to the house!!! i mean - its not like he cared b/c he wasnt living there!

Re: Changing Locks
YES! Ours was a foreclosure so the bank only had one front door key. Who knows where the other keys are so we changed everything.

Re: Changing Locks
Yup, every door handle and dead bolt.
Two reasons, first just to be safe and secondly so every door would have the same key.

Re: Changing Locks
This is a good idea. We did not do this immediately. One day I gout a phone call from merry maid saying that they hadn't realized the former owners had moved out and had cleaned the kitchen and bathroom while we were at work. You don't know who might have keys to the house...
