Channel 5 news - BOCES school!
They are showing a piece right now on a boy who was locked in a padded closet/room with no lights on over 40 times for refusing to go to cooking class. The student has special needs and the parents went to the school one day and he was there all huddled in a corner.
I interviewed there before I got my job in the city and also know someone who works there!
I am shocked!!!

Re: Channel 5 news - BOCES school!
The child had special needs too -- they didn't say what his disability was but most kids in BOCES have considerable disabilities. It is just so mean.

Well unfortunately rooms like this are necessary, however, they should be used properly. They are a great resource when a student may become violent and possibly hurt himself or others.

I don't care how "properly" they're used...they don't BELONG in a school, where LEARNING is supposed to be taking place...NOT treatment such as this "room" provides...in that case, remove the kid from the school altogether, so that he/she is not disrupting the rest of the class, and/or possibly causing physical harm to him/herself or others!

Re: Channel 5 news - BOCES school!
I don't know --- maybe I just haven't taught kids who had serious enough problems to require a room like this -- but I just see so many other options that would be better. I've had to restrain students at my job. I teach special ed in brooklyn. My first year teaching I had a girl who trashed my room on a daily basis and I was required to restrain her and would come up with severe bruises all over my legs and arms from her. However, I would have never locked her in the room. If she really went beyond the limit of getting ehr back 2 of my paras would bring her to the gym and just let her run around for as long as it took to tire her out.
I don't really know if that was the best solution and of course every child is different, but I couldn't imagine locking a kid in a room with no lights on and leaving them there for as long as an hour without any way of them getting out if they started to freak out from the darkness or anything like that.
Also the parents said that the boy had a seizure disorder and could have had seizures while in the room that could have caused damage to him if not treated while they were happening.

I'm sorry I disagree...locking a kid in a closet doesn't solve a problem. You remove the child from the classroom and seek immediate help..never lock them in a closet..they are kids not animals.
This boy was autistic..he was locked in a blue padded 5x5 room..alone. He is prone to seizures and when he has them stops breathing...the what if possibilities are crazy...if this boy had a seizure in their alone..he could have died. NO child should ever ever be left alone in a situation like that..especially a special needs child like this boy..who doesn't even understand what is going on!!
ETA- I've only been teaching autistic children this year..but one of the first things I was taught was how to restrain them if they have an episode...there are ways other that shoving them in a closet. And places like Rosemary Kennedy have more than one teacher in a classroom..so there is no excuse for what was done. Seems they weren't trained too well!!

This is reprehensible. I also disagree that these rooms are "necessary". IMO, locking a child in a room smaller than a bathroom can do no good. It's difficult to fathom how many times those "rooms" have been used.

Re: Channel 5 news - BOCES school!
In some psychiatric schools and day treatment centers, rooms like this exist not to be used as punitive measures but for the safety of the children. Children are not to be left alone and doors are never to be locked. Students are not allowed to use these rooms unless parents sign releases and allow it. The rooms are padded much like the padding behind a basketball net in a gymnasium.
An ideal team of support staff members are trained in crisis intervention techniques that are non-invasive and respect the student/clients space. HOWEVER, there are MANY times when students can bcome aggressive and outright dangerous towards themselves, other students and even staff members. Trust me, I see it every day and have been on the receiving end of aggression by children. YES, some VERY young children. At this time, it would stand to say that a student may be brought to a room such as this.
If the specially trained support staff in a building is NOT able to control such students, 911 is called. There are actual legal "holds" and "take-downs" and if they are not used, a child could get hurt.
I have worked with developmentally disabled students for 10 years. My experience has taught me that punishment doesnt really work. Different populations of disabled students require different types of responses to crises. This was not a situation where a child would have warranted something punitive. So the kid didnt want to go to cooking class - so what. I have kids that dont want to go to class all the time. Know what I do? Let them sit where they are and they don't earn privileges. Done deal. End of story. It seems the BOCES program did not have a well-established behavior system to address the population it serves.

Re: Channel 5 news - BOCES school!
wow i can't believe this! i do not believe in these rooms, but only maybe as an exstreem case to the point that they have to call for outside help. just yesterday a kindergardener in my daughters school district was on a mini bus and went out of control and bashed his head against the window and it broke. i know these kids all to well as for when i worked in a special needs class room last year, and did have a child that was hard to handle but never to the point of needing a room like that. thank god!

I was wondering the same thing. And just to add my two cents...I have worked with the absolute WORST cases of children who are violent to themselves and others, and even the school I worked in did NOT have padded rooms like this. They are rarely used properly. However, I do not know what the policy in BOCES schools is on take-downs and holds. We were trained to do take-downs and holds as a means for keeping the students from inflicting harm on themselves and others, and pretty much used these techniques everyday. If they are not able to use these in BOCES, I can't imagine what other choices they would really have, but my guess is they are also trained to deal with it in many other ways, as was I. It's unfortunate, but we rarely get the real story, anyway.

The student is autistic and also has seizure disorders. They are very lucky he did not have a siezure while in isolation
RK school is supposed to be the leading school for DD & ED students, this really frightens me.

this is a new case, and also since this family has come forward at least 4 others have as well to complain about the use of this *room*
