And people dont realize just how strong mentally disabled people, including kids, can be.
The smallest, thinest of people can take 5 men to hold down...

This discussion is actually very interesting to me -- to see the different opinions that everyone has on this topic...
Here is the link to the article on Newsday

i think that it is even more interesting how an article in a paper can make peoples opinions...
I mean i can see how this happens
But as someone who has been in the field for some time now...
I see how skewed the article is...
It is playing on people's outrage without really explaining why and how this kind of thing is used and how it certainly can be useful...
I think people can't believe that something like that is actually, at times, a BETTER option.
Plus on top of that mental disability is a big unknown for a lot of people..
So the obvious option is to be outraged...
And maybe it is called for. Maybe not.
There are a bunch of facilities that use "time out room". There are a bunch of facilities that use even more strange alternatives to dealing with behavior disorder...That society just cannot understand...
But it doesn't necessarily mean that it is abusive or wrong

In some psychiatric schools and day treatment centers, rooms like this exist not to be used as punitive measures but for the safety of the children. Children are not to be left alone and doors are never to be locked. Students are not allowed to use these rooms unless parents sign releases and allow it. The rooms are padded much like the padding behind a basketball net in a gymnasium.
An ideal team of support staff members are trained in crisis intervention techniques that are non-invasive and respect the student/clients space. HOWEVER, there are MANY times when students can bcome aggressive and outright dangerous towards themselves, other students and even staff members. Trust me, I see it every day and have been on the receiving end of aggression by children. YES, some VERY young children. At this time, it would stand to say that a student may be brought to a room such as this.
If the specially trained support staff in a building is NOT able to control such students, 911 is called. There are actual legal "holds" and "take-downs" and if they are not used, a child could get hurt.
I have worked with developmentally disabled students for 10 years. My experience has taught me that punishment doesnt really work. Different populations of disabled students require different types of responses to crises. This was not a situation where a child would have warranted something punitive. So the kid didnt want to go to cooking class - so what. I have kids that dont want to go to class all the time. Know what I do? Let them sit where they are and they don't earn privileges. Done deal. End of story. It seems the BOCES program did not have a well-established behavior system to address the population it serves.
ditto

i agreed 100% ofwhat you said until this part...
Do you really think that they put him in a timeout room for not wanting to go to a class?
He was AGGRESSIVE. And probably a lot more than the "parents" are letting on. And since it is illegal for the facility to speak about the kid's true behaviors, it is going to look skewed.
Yes "earning privileges" is a great techinque...But not in preventing aggression at that moment. Some sort of protection is necessary. And as you mentioned there are some facilities that have Crisis Teams but in all honesty, with funding and such they are becoming scarce..And yes takedowns can be used...But takedowns can be very dangerous as well...So like i have said...it really comes down to knowing the patient. And i really don't think you can go by soley what the parents are saying...
The parents KNEW that the facility was using the time out room. And i think a lot of what they are saying is crap to win money...
