Cheating- WWYD?
I know I've had cheating situations before- but none as obvious as today's and my school has no real official policy (though the city does- will check on Mon.)
Anyway, I told two kids to stop talking during a test I gave today. They are in 7th grade. It looked like student A was giving Student B answers (B is a very weak student). When I checked the test, both had the same 5 answers wrong.
WWYD? Beyond calling their parents, who likely won't do much.

I teach 8th grade and honestly if I saw this happening, I'd probably give both a 0. I hate those situations

I teach high school. I usually give a zero, call home and give detention.

I do the same -- this is actually our school policy, pretty much. (Plus, throw in my signature guilt trip to try to ensure that it doesn't happen again. Tends to work. ) I hate dealing with this stuff, though... sorry.

this is what i would do
*thankfully* ive never had a situation..but i also tell my kids before every quiz/test that if i catch them cheating their paper will be ripped up and they'll get a zero..i think it may deter them lol

Re: Cheating- WWYD?
Here are the two things I have done with cheaters:
automatic zero, call home, referral
(this is what I do for labs since they have to be given the opportunity to get a satisfactory grade in order to take the Regents) call home, tell admin, give them a zero, but allow them the option to redo the lab (alone) after school.

I like to grade the test and then give each of the students half of the grade. I let them know that if they want to share answers, they can share a grade as well. And a phone call home is always good.

I really like this idea!
I've been called a harda$$ because if my 3rd graders talk during a test, I take the paper and they get a zero. Sorry, but they have a warning before every single quiz not to talk.

I prefer this as well. I swear they hate it more than the zero. And I make sure the whole class hears me telling them. Passive aggressive, yes. But it gets the point across to everyone.

I actually did this with one of the cheaters on a graded classwork assigment- when he asked me, I explained why and he didn't seem too bothered.
Thanks for all the responses. I am going to talk to my principal tomorrow.
