Child in my classroom....her mother passed away

I'm headed on over to a wake tonight for a child in my classroom. She's four years old and her mother passed away. I had just wrote to you guys looking for information on how to deal with the subject in my classroom, thinking I'd have time to talk to the children. My director came in this morning and said that the mom had passed away Saturday morning just after going into hospice on Friday. It's just so sad Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon My heart breaks for this child. She wasn't in school today and my director had went on over to the wake this afternoon and she wasn't there either. When asking how she was, her dad had explained that Mommy was sick and wasn't in pain anymore and went to heaven. He said that a lot of people would be crying and would be upset. The child's response "Don't worry Daddy, I'll give them all a hug and make them feel better". My heart breaks Chat Icon I can't even imagine!!

OmG...that is so sad. That poor little girl and her father. Chat Icon Chat Icon

When I was teaching, a girl's mother in my friend's class passed away from cancer. We (the staff) were a mess (the mother was heavily involved in the PTA and well known/ liked).

The little girl was absent for about a week, and when she came back, she brought a book (I cannot for the life of me remember the title, but I think it was Mother's Day with the Rugrats). Basically it was a book about a mother's passing and how to cope. The little girl also brought in a picture of her mom and passed it around to her classmates. My friend (the child's teacher) had to leave the room several times to compose herself (didn't want to cry in front of the child). The little girl was very strong (at least from what we saw). She received counseling from the SBST (school-based support team) and moved with her dad the following year.

So very, very sad. Many prayers to that little girl and her family! Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: Child in my classroom....her mother passed away

My advice is to just be there for her. I had a child in my class whose mom died the year before I had her, but the effects remained. She had good days and some terrible days. I had an aide in my room so if she was having a hard time I was able to leave my room and go for a walk with her!
