I am having my baby in Oct. I plan on taking some time off (maybe more than the 12 weeks for FMLA)....can this be done...lets say come back in April or May?

Re: Childcare leave
Depends on your contract. My school allows for up to 2 years of unpaid childcare leave.

Re: Childcare leave
In my district, I can use up all my accrued sick days and then take up to 1 year unpaid leave.
SO my plan this year is to use 8 sick days for the last 2 weeks of school ( I get 2 days from my dist. for maternity no charge) I have 41 days saved currently.
And then I will work the first conference day in Sept and gain 18 more days so I can stay out until the end of Nov.

Re: Childcare leave
In my district after the 12 weeks we could only extend leave to semesters. So my 12 weeks was up in Nov. I could come back in Nov, Feb or the following September

Same with mine. You couldn't come back mid-semester, they felt it was too disruptive to the students.
My friend teaches in another district and she was given the same option - September or February, so I think it's a fairly common practice on LI.

Re: Childcare leave
I had my baby in oct as well; at the end of my 12 weeks I either had to come back or take the rest of the year, we ha no mid year return option. In my district it's 12 weeks an return or stay out till sept (Or the following sept since we get 2 years of unpaid leave). Friends in elem districts tend to have midyear return options but on the hs I haven't heard of this option too often. This is LI btw.

Technically no. It's 12 weeks or the rest of the year.

My secretary told me that while leaves are SUPPOSED to be a year you can claim financial hardship and come back at any time. Now I don't know if my Principal is just nice but plenty of women in my school take an extra month or two or three and come back before the end of the school year. (nyc)

I stand (well, sit) corrected. I emailed a union rep to ask and they said you were right. But... your principal does have to approve your taking a partial-year leave after your 12 weeks run out. Not all are nice enough to allow this. If you're lucky enough to work for a reasonable person, it's worth asking!
