Way to judge people on two seconds of their lives
Some people on this board are really over the top with their judgment about eating, weight, and nutrition. You aren't perfect because you eat healthy; you have flaws too, so stop berating people on their flaws.
If people wore their insides on the outside, everyone would be a little ugly.
I am overweight, but I eat pretty damn healthy. Virtually no beef, pork, chips, cookies, ice cream, only whole wheat bread/pasta, tons of vegetables and fruits, low-fat dairy only, etc. Yet on the one day of the month that I go get ice cream or something, I have to worry about some pretentious person, which is the image you're giving of yourself here, judging me? Next time, remember that you aren't perfect.
I couldn't agree more. We eat very healthy 95% of the time and I am overweight. My child is on the upper percentiles for height and weight, but is learning excellent habits from me at home because I want better for my child than what I learned as a child. As such, my child loves fruits and veggies and drinking water, but every now and then asks for a treat and I don't see something wrong with that. I wanted to cry when I read this post. Now I should be worrying what every skinny person who doesn't know me thinks when I cave in and get my child a munchkin once a month?
I agree, if the Mom was a skinny mini and so was the kid this post never would have happened. Snap judgements usually are hurtful and incorrect. How do you know that there isnt a medical condition which makes this child this way or maybe they HAVE been dieting all month and this was her one big treat! People should mind thier own business because, no one is a perfect parent but the world is so full of sanctimommies!

Re: Childhood obesity...this got me today
I never truly had a weight problem growing up or as an adult. I went through times when I could have lost an extra 5/7. I grew up with a mother who was NEVER thin. My mom was not a thin baby, kid or adult. My mom's dad died of diabetes and my mom has it but has never changed her eating habits, worse is the fact she never ever exercises.
When I am out with my mom I always feel like someone is judging her and it makes me feel uncomfortable, at times I feel like people are looking at me thinking you'll be just like your mom, especially if I decide to eat something bad.
Growing up my dad always made comments about what and time of day I was eating. I think because of my mom. He would say, if you eat that or at this time day/night your going to get fat. Made me so paranoid I would weigh myself at least 15 times a day. My aunt worried I was never eating enough...I will say as an adult I still think of his comments before I eat something..sad
Im not sure what Im trying to say, but I do know some people that eat well and still struggle with weight. It is very hard with all the crap companies ADD to products to make them more appealing. They add it because WE as consumers wont eat something if it doesn't look a certain way

Listen, we are always judging things. That's how we know to not walk down that back alley or not to eat that fish because it's smells weird. I would have the same exact thoughts as the OP if I saw a similar thing. I HAVE had the same thoughts when seeing children eating garbage. It's also not just about eating healthy, 'Ive known quite a few very overweight vegetarians in my time. It's the amount of food your eating that makes you over weight. Quality is important but quantity is as well.

I certainly didn't mean to offend anyone and I apologize if I did.
My kids (and I ) eat all he junk mentioned on this thread so I don't want people to think I'm this crazy health nut that judges everyone.
Perhaps if this girl had only a slurped and not both a slurpee and a donout I wouldn't have thought twice.. I don't know
Again I apologize if I offended anyone

Re: Childhood obesity...this got me today
I see it all the time...the more you know, the better you are...watching the documentary hungry for change truly changed the way I eat and feed my family. I've never been overweight but always ate more junk than I should have. Even when I thought I was eating healthfully, I didn't know about the chemicals I was ingesting...until the documentary. It hasn't always been easy, but I'm starting to see that my family prefers the flavor of the healthier options...I limit the snacks we keep on hand and I offer more fruit and veggie options.
I usually, opt for local bakeries over DD, however once we moved, it was easier to drive to DD in the morning. Every morning for 6 months I had a #1 - coffee light and sweet with 2 vanilla frosted donuts...
I started to feel like crap, moody, gained weight, looked dull and didn't put 2 and 2 together until summer when my commute ended. I haven't had coffee since going back to work and haven't been to DD since June. I honestly feel SO much happier and my clothes fit better. My skin has improved and I don't get wild mood swings anymore.
No one could have guessed that I ate so poorly each morning, but I felt the aftermath and am so happy that I've changed my habits for this school year.
The more we know, the better we can do & feel

I do understand what you were trying to say. B/c when I realized my DD was maybe putting on some weight solely from junk, instead of saying NO entirely, I would pay for a small slurpee and fill only half a cup full (she only had slurpees 4 times at most btw, ever, in her life which was only this summer!). She didn't even realize I didn't fill it. And absolutely not combining it with another junk item. If I had gotten her a larger slurpee and a donut, it wouldn't have even felt right or looked right to me as her mother who knows she doesnt do this all the time! So I see what you mean and understood your point about seeing 2 unhealthy items, combined with someone being overweight.
I just know for me, once I saw some extra weight come on, I had to watch for my child and I had to make some better choices without saying no entirely.

Childhood obesity...this got me today
You are what you eat. If I see anyone eating the food from 7-11 I think it's gross - skinny or overweight. The other day I saw a thin pretty girl buying those Doritos stuffed cheese things and thought how disgusting. We eat very healthy, I can't say it's 100% clean but close. Food is a very personal choice - but I do think it's a shame so much of our food is processed garbage and that the food companies knowingly put a ton of sugar and other additives in food to addict people. There is so much musinformation we don't make it easy for people to learn how to distinguish good food from bad. I don't have junk food in the house, no soda, no cookies nothing. If its not there we can't eat it! And honestly I don't feel deprived. I make DS snacks, choc chip whole wheat muffins with maple syrup instead of white sugar etc. when he is around junk food he doesn't go crazy - if we are at a party or someone's house I don't stop him from eating what the other kids do. To me it's sad if people are waking out of 7-11 and don't understand what's really in that slurped or donut, if they do and still choose to eat it then that's their choice.
Eta: I don't make everything for DS - I do buy some snacks like the apple sauce pouches, veggie pouches and Annie's bunnies. He loves dairy and would live off cheese if he could so we always have cheese sticks.

That was kind of my point in my reply. I feel like nobody would judge me for walking out with a slurpee and a bag of chips because I am thin. But I bet I eat way worse than most "overweight" people. Thin doesn't always mean healthy. I already see my bad eating habits showing up in my DD. But people are quicker to judge overweight people it seems.

Childhood obesity...this got me today
Most people judge, it's human nature. Would you judge a person who just lit up a cigarette after finishing a chemo treatment for lung cancer? I know I would. We can't help but judge when we see people doing what we "perceive" as damage to themselves and others.
Unfortunately perception is reality.

Honestly, I don't think it mattered WHAT this girl was eating, I think, for you, it mattered that both were large.... I don't think that you would have thought twice if they were "skinny" (note I write skinny not healthy). I'm also curious if you would have thought the same if it were a father and son? As a society, we have such double standards for men and women.
I can't say that the same thing wouldn't have flitted through my mind, but I'm a big girl and understand that it's not always so black and white. I also believe that, while there are choices we can all make every day, it is definitely more expensive to eat healthy than to eat crap. That's why obesity is so closely tied to socioeconomic issues - if you are poorer, you are more likely to be obese for a variety of reasons, one of which is lack of access to healthier options.

This!
There seems to be a lot of judgement going on here when the judgers literally have NO clue about these people's lives.
Worry more about yourself and less about strangers you pass in a 7-11 parking lot.

Re: Childhood obesity...this got me today
Most people judge based on appearances.
How many average or below average guys/girls don't get a 2nd look from the opposite sex. Forget about taking the time to actually talk to them. That's why so many people put their best pictures up as a profile picture.
How many people walk to the other side of the street or pull their kids closer to them if they see a goth person, or someone with numerous tattoos and piercings in their face coming towards them on a street.
What if you saw a woman who looked extremely thin with her child. You most likely would think..wow I hope her kid doesn't pick up her eating habits. When all we know, she may actually be sick.
The list goes on and on.
Right or wrong. We all judge based on looks at some point.

My point was more that we all judge by appearances.
If she was walking out with a water and a piece of fruit in her hand (which you can buy at 7-11 for probably the same price as a Slupree and Donut) chances are the OP wouldn't have thought much of it.
But a slupree and donut is not healthy eating for a kid or an adult.
And I'm sorry but childhood obesity is very serious in the country. It's doubled in 30 yrs. And it's not because kids are getting out there and being active and eating healthy.
I'm not out to shame anyone especially a child. But as parents we need to make sure our kids are active. And if you want to give your kid a treat of all sugar. Don't make it a slupree and donut. Together.
I'm not perfect. But I do my best to balance my diet. And made sure I did it for my kid growing up. Along with her being in sports.

Re: Childhood obesity...this got me today
I didn't see anything judgmental in the OP.
That child has a health issue. At this point in her life it's not her fault. And I am sure her mother is suffering and has issues as a result of her own weight. The challenge is huge (not making a pun or joke) and people have to stop tiptoeing around the fact that too many people are obese. I am not talking about people who are overweight, make good choices 90% of the time and still have trouble losing.
This also does not just affect the individuals- it impacts all of us. We're all paying for it: Economic Costs of Obesity

I am sure everyone judges stuff but when you put it out there (even moreso on here), you open yourself up to be judged too.
I didn't think the OP had any ill intent but I said in my head "uh oh here we go" when I first read this thread because I know the turn certain topics always take on here.

If it were two skinny people I would think wow how can they eat like that and be so thin! I'd be jealous

thanks you! This is exactly what I was feeling/meant! I work with children with disabilities and it is sad to see kids with limited mobility/endurance due to obesity. Something IMO that can prevented sometimes.

This is amazing ^^^^!!! There are many many thin people that eat like crap and because they look "healthy" you aren't judging them...how sad. Those chunky people you are judging could be healthier than the skinny people you don't give a second look at.

Its sad that we judge people we don't know at all for eating donuts and drinking slurpees. This post would NEVER had been "I saw a little boy and his dad and the boy ate a slurpee and a donut". Being an overweight adolescent is not easy - and there is no guarantee that she has health issues. You can't judge her mobility based on 2 minutes in 7-11. Maybe she got hurt playing a sport. Or she was sick and walking slowly. Or maybe she developed eating issues for being criticized so harshly on her weight and her mom wanted her to eat anything at all. Worry about your own family.
I can't imagine ever being in a position where I worried about what other people were eating.
