Re: CIO Advocates

I'm not a CIO advocate as Loey's only 4 months old and we haven't done that yet - but this is from an email from my friend who DID do CIO with her daughter... (I'm replacing her daughter's name with "DD")

"Just know that when you decide to put him in a crib (or where ever you are going to have him sleep) and you hear him screaming so hard that you think he can't breath, he is okay. All babies do that when you are trying to train them to sleep on their own. You can be reassured that he is okay if you have fed him, burped him and changed him before you put him down. You know his screaming isn't because he's hungry, has a wet diaper, or is gassy. He's just crying because he is going to sleep on his own for the first time. We used a pacifier with DD when we put her in her crib at three months. DH and I both didn't want her to use a pacifier after 6 months so we took it away. She cried really hard for about 3 days but then she learned how to fall asleep with out one. It will take time and you will have to get use to the crying but Logan will be fine. It's hard to listen to your baby cry but you just have to be strong when you decide to do it. Your baby is learning from you and Logan will learn that when you put him in the crib he needs to go to sleep. DD still cries when we put her down for a nap or at night but we know she is fine. Her crying may last anywhere from 30 seconds to 20 minutes then she eventually falls asleep. The book Baby Wise was really helpful as we started working through the process of getting DD on a schedule and putting her down for a nap and the fact that I had my sister-in-laws that helped motivate us and reassure us that DD was going to be okay if she cried when we put her down for a nap. It's hard working through these things as a first time parent."

In the conversation we had that preceded this email... she said that the first night her DD cried for like 1.5 hours I believe. And the next night around 30 minutes. The following night was something like 3 minutes...

We are in the midst of repeating CIO. We were away for a few days, her bedtime routine was virtually non-existent while we were gone, so we're re-training.

Two nights ago I started over, and DD cried for 50 minutes. BUT, I was in the room right across the hall, and between her crying, I clearly heard her singing to herself. So I KNEW she was capable of soothing herself, she just didn't want to go to bed.

ETA: DD is 8 months old.

Re: CIO Advocates

We lucked out with Kaydyn she never cried more than 20 mins. She cries and fusses now more at 2yo than she ever did as a baby. Sometimes it's more whining than real crying but it can last for 30 mins or so.

ETA: We did CIO at 8 months. We did it more for the middle of the night waking than for going to bed or naps.

We never followed through with CIO with my first son (he's 4 now) so we still have to lay with him in bed until he's asleep. With my 2nd son, we did do CIO and he's never cried for more than 1hr and that was in the beginning.

Re: CIO Advocates

The first night he cried for an hour and a half. I had the video monitor in my hand the entire time and watched his every move. At time he was screaming. At time he was wimpering. At times he fell back asleep.

The second night he cried for an hour.

The third night he slept 12 hours.

The 4th night he woke and cried for five minutes.

The 5th night he slept for 12 hours.

The first night is HORRIBLE.

The entire time I kept saying "I'm going to go in and get him" but then I realized that I had just let him cry for 20 minutes then for nothing. This went on the entire time until he finally fell asleep. I was beyond relieved when it happened. To make it worse my DH was passed out the ENTIRE time. I was so mad at him the next day. First night is the worst - I got REALLY lucky and it was only 20 minutes the first night. But I made DH stay up and be a clock watcher while I stared at the monitor and cried Chat Icon

Re: CIO Advocates

The first time we ever did CIO, DS was just over 12 months. He cried for 1 hour 15 minutes straight. The next night like 20 minutes and the following night, not at all.

We did it because from 9-12 months DS was waking middle of hte night. More than he ever did in his LIFE. I never did CIO to put him down to sleep or for naps. Just mid night wakings.

This was us too.
EXcept DH was against CIO, but I was the one waking in the night to get him. So DH and I sat in bed and in a whisper were fighting most of hte time over whether to get him. But neither of us wanted to be hte ONE who who went to get him if was close to falling asleep!

PS I sat GLUED to the Video monitor the whole time!@

We only did CIO once. The first night DS cried for 49 minutes in total. The second night, 7 minutes. After that, he would cry for a few seconds when we first put him in his crib and would then situate himself and fall asleep.

This is EXACTLY what's going on with us now. Started at 10 months and now DS is almost 11 months and has been doing this just about every night. From 3.5 months to 10 months he's been STTN and going on his own.

Re: CIO Advocates

We did CIO when we took away the paci. First night he cried for 2.5 hrs. We were prepared for this, but then he was sleeping. The second night about an hour, third night 30 minutes. After that nothing. Waking in the middle of the night is still tough. Most times he will cry for 5 minutes and goes back to sleep, but if he stands in his crib and cries, he's in it for the long haul. This can literally last hours.

I agree, go somewhere where you can't hear them as clearly. The second night he started crying earlier (12am) so I was still downstairs. I stayed down here for a half hour and it was sooo much better then being in the room across the hall!

Re: CIO Advocates

I wouldn't say I'm an advocate but I did try it with DS. My experience was AMAZING, He only CIO for 2 or 3 days. I can't remmeber it, it was all just too easy He never cried for more than 5 minutes. By the end of 3 days he was STTN. I guess I'm one of the lucky ones. I don't know if I would've stuck to it if it had been hard. I'ma CIO "virgin. DS was 5 and 1/2 months.

Re: CIO Advocates

We only did it for 3 days, then called it quits. His crying was only getting worse as the days went on, not better, and we felt CIO just wasn't for us.

Day 1-cried about 15-20 minutes. We thought we would have a cakewalk.
Day 2-cried about an hour and more intensely.
Day 3--1 1/2 hours of hysertical crying. Too long IMO and too intense, so I went to check on him and found he had vomited. We called it quits after this.

Since then, I have read some children do not respond well to CIO and become overly hysterical. And rather than the crying becoming less each night, it becomes worse. I am convinced my son falls into this group. I think CIO does work for most people, but not for us.

We did change his bedtime, institued a sleep routine and started working on getting him napping earlier, and these things made a WORLD of difference. This was at 7 months.

Re: CIO Advocates

Thanks for all the answers.

Ryan is 22 months and we did CIO at 7.5 months. Gratefully the worst was 45 minutes.

But I know sometimes kids regress out of no where and was just curious what the longest amount of time for CIO was for some other DC.

Re: CIO Advocates

Jacen is one tough cookie.

First CIO with naps at 5 1/2 months... 45 minutes of crying. 2nd day was 20 minutes. 3rd day 5 minutes. Not a peep after that day.

First CIO at night at 6 months old... an hour and 50 minutes. Chat Icon The 2nd night, not a peep. The 3rd night... an hour.

After that, i have no idea.

We've had to do CIO so many times i've lost count. Chat Icon After sicknesses, vacations, etc etc.

Like i said, he's a tough one. Chat Icon But you already know that. Chat Icon

Re: CIO Advocates

The longest was when first started at 7 weeks. The total time was approx 30 min. I went in after 5 min to pat his head, tell him I love him and that he's ok and that it was bedtime, then after 7, 9 and then didn't have to go back at 11 because he was asleep at 10 min. The second night I started at 7 min, went back after 9 min and then didn't have to go back in. The 3rd night he slept through the night completely. He was a CIO virgin. Only had to do it once or twice since (he's 5 months old).

ETA: prior to starting CIO we got clearance from our ped. Then I slowly weened him off of the 1 middle of the night bottle, which showed me he was kinda ready since he was just as calm after less than 2 oz as he was after 5 oz and he was already getting so much during the day (including the middle of the night bottle he was taking 36oz...unbelievably he is not chunky at all). At 7 weeks that was a bit much.

7 weeks??

I am a CIO advocate, my ped recommended that I do it at 5.5 months and we tried it, it worked, then he was sick, we went away, blah, blah, we were finally sucessful at a year

I don't remember how long he cried, maybe an hour? But it wasn't that bad honestly..Chat Icon
