Closing of too many stores by the Source/Roosevelt Field area
I was at Michael's this weekend and it hit me...
That area is going to look terrible with all these stores closing.
In that area alone, Fortunoff, Circuit City, Home Depot Expo and the Macaroni Grill are all going to be empty.
What the heck is going to fill all those empty stores and how long will it take? It's going to look so run down with so many empty stores. This economic situation is very depressing.
ETA - In addition, all those people losing their jobs, how terrible for them.

Yes it is very sad.. unfortunately - this is a new world now. Things will become worse before they get better. Brace yourselves.

Re: Closing of too many stores by the Source/Roosevelt Field area
To be quite honest, I really don't feel bad when large commercial institutions (Circuit City, Home Depot Expo, etc.) go out of business. It's the cycle of business. Remember Montgomery Ward and Woolworths? What makes me sad is when the small, family owned business go out.

I don't know what will happen over there. Cheesecake is still a gold mine and brings in a lot of people (granted a bit less than it was but still a LOT of people). PF Changs does pretty good business too.

I was there over the weekend and thought the same thing. It was sad to see. Especially inside the source, so many stores are out of business

They built that mall around Fortunoff. The mall was known as The Mall at the Source because Fortunoff was "The Source." The mall will crumble.

I do feel bad for all of the people I know who will be losing their jobs bc of these closings. No severance, no notice, no nothing

Re: Closing of too many stores by the Source/Roosevelt Field area
I haven't been to the Source in a while (I moved off LI in 2005) but it seemed that even in the "good" times that the mall had a high turnover of stores. One of my friends worked with Simon in some capacity and she said that the rents were really high. I can also see that mall falling apart. It's sad. I can't believe so many places over their are going under.

That's kinda cold. My DH works for a large commercial institution and if he lost his job we'd lose our house. Those large commercial institutions employ thousands of people who have homes and families just like you.... I hope everyone doesn't feel the way you do or it would be a very sad world.

Re: Closing of too many stores by the Source/Roosevelt Field area
My mom and I were talking about this the other day. I don't know if the Source Mall can survive without any anchor stores.
I know ULTA isn't in the Source Mall but it's closing too.
What a scary time!

Re: Closing of too many stores by the Source/Roosevelt Field area
DH and I went by there yesterday and were saying the same thing. It's not just the big chain stores, if you drive up and down Old Country it's a ghost town, so many stores are boarded up

Re: Closing of too many stores by the Source/Roosevelt Field area
I was at Fortuneoff with my mom on Friday night and while sad it is closing, we tried both the Cheescake Factory and PF Changs for dinner and the places were jammed packed. Over a 1/2 hour wait at each and the bar was packed. SO at least they are still doing business. We wound up going to a restaurant in Garden CIty and it was EMPTY. We were one of 4 tables.

what rest was that? The restaurants there almost never get too crowded though most times.

It's not just us here on LI though, is it? I would assume NJ retail areas, or any other retail areas in the US would be having the same issues or no? Terrible, just terrible and depressing.

Re: Closing of too many stores by the Source/Roosevelt Field area
The economy is definitely hitting both the large retailers and the small mom & pop shops. I wouldn't mind seeing a decrease in traffic in some areas but not for this reason. It's too sad.

I live on the upper west side of Manhattan, and so many small business are closing- and the only business coming in are banks! They joke that the UWS is becoming the banking district.
