Cocoa in mulch

I had heard about certain wood of cocoa plants being used in mulch and to be careful b/c its toxic to dogs, but im trying to figure out which mulches have itChat Icon

We used the Scotts Nature Scapes in the brown and also had red mulch delivered from a yard supplier.

Does anyone know the details on this?

Re: Cocoa in mulch

The mulch they're talking about is actually made from cocoa bean husks. Regular wood mulch shouldn't have cocoa beans in them. Then again, if your dog is like mine, he eats the wood stuff too. Chat Icon

Re: Cocoa in mulch

sorry for the chemistry lesson....

its not the chocolate itself that is toxic.... its the beans.

Cocoa beans contain caffeine and a related chemical compound called theobromine, which is the real danger. its also found in leaves of the tea plant, acai berries, and the cola nuts...

as little as 50 grams of chocolate for a smaller dog and 400 grams for an average-sized dog could cause poisoning...

For example, 1 oz baker's chocolate bar would be enough to bring out symptoms in 44 lb dog.

the effects of theobromine can last 20 to 40 minutes in a person, but after 17 hours, half of the theobromine a dog has ingested is still in the system.
