Cold cuts... are they really that risky?

I've always enjoyed cold cut sandwiches before I was pregnant but now that it's on the "no-no" list, all I want is a freakin turkey sandwich!! I say it out loud at least once a day. I'm so sick of chicken in a zillion different varieties for lunch and I'm craving some turkey ham and cheese on a roll lol...

Is it really that bad? I'm trying to hold strong since its still the first tri, but I really want it Chat Icon I know womp womp, there's worse things than holding out for 9 months (and honestly I can't get behind the whole microwaving thing. that creeps me out lol)

Just my stomach venting for something different Chat Icon

Don't microwave, toast. My doctor said cold cuts were really likely okay if they are from a reputable, clean place, but to be on the safe side I only eat turkey toasted now (like how they do at Quiznos when they run it through the toaster).

I've been doing this about once a week and I"m almost 17 weeks and no listeria.

I've read that it's OK as long as you cook the meat to an internal temp of ... 117* (I don't remember, I think I read it on here!)...

It's safe to eat deli meats if you reheat them until steaming hot.

That's from the first thread on this board.

hmmmm maybe I'll try the toasting route to get it heated up. just one of those things... you always want it that much more when suddenly you "can't" have it!!

I ate COLD cold cuts my entire pregnancy. I am fine, my DS is fine. Its more about the nitrates for me than if they can make you sick.

If you have been eating cold cuts your entire life and never been sick from then then really what are the chances you will get sick now...slim. You have just as much chance as getting sick from that chicken you eat or the salad. Salad is actually a higher chance than most other foods.

I had 2 Drs and a High risk dr and all said cold cuts are FINE. Its jsut because someone somewhere decided it was the hot new food to add to the don't eat list.

Wow, that's interesting. I was wondering about that...like is it some sort of new craze? I'm sure a few years ago women were eating cold cuts on a regular basis without thinking about it and were just fine. Do you know when the "no-cold cuts" rule came about?

Re: Cold cuts... are they really that risky?

As other people have said, just heat it up.

However, I was too chicken (no pun intended) to do this.

My suggestion, go to a diner that you know uses real turkey breast and not the cold cut type. DH and I went to grand luxe and I asked the waitress a thousand times if the turkey was real turkey.
This is how I got my turkey fix. (Although it wasn't even that good Chat Iconlol)

Cold cuts... are they really that risky?

I have never been a cold cuts person but this entire pregnancy all I want is an Italian hero from this one little place in Astoria. I have had a couple of small piece of Italian hero at parties but only a few times and nothing has happened to us. My mom always says "they didn't have these rules when I was pregnant and I have 3 kids".

If you are THAT worried about it then heat it up (DH makes me panini's all the time just to get some cold cuts I want). I would make sure it's from a clean place too. Otherwise I really don't think that every now and then would hurt you that much.

FIL is not allowed in the hospital unless he has this Italian hero for me!!! It's a BIG hero so I'm waiting until pregnancy is over...but I'm talking like the MINUTE he's out!

Re: Cold cuts... are they really that risky?

I have cut out the whole having deli meats for lunch. I'm too scared of getting listeria so I just don't do it. I try to come up with other creative lunch ideas. I swear the day I give birth DH is going to show up at the hospital with an American Hero with the works and a Large Soda!!! How I miss my cold cuts and Caffeine Soda!!

Same. The chances of listeria are SOOOOOOO incredibly slim. And in fact, the last outbreaks have been from bagged salad and canteloupe! Which I'm sure most of us would eat without hesitation.

Re: Cold cuts... are they really that risky?

I am just copying and pasting what I have written before on this topic:

"I know Listeria is a big fear on LIF, but it is very rare. 2,500 people in the US contract Listeria each year. Total. Out of the population of America! Out of that 2500 people about 833 of the people who contract Listeria are pregnant. Out of those 833 pregnant people, the majority of the women are from Latin decent and it is from a homemade cheese called queso fresco.

This is such a small number that the percentage of people who contract Listeria> is .001%!!!!!

In Europe, where there aren't these crazy restrictions on what pregnant women eat the numbers are even less, and Listeria is under the "rarer disease" category."

I am not telling you to go out and eat cold cuts, you have to do what you are comfortable with, but maybe this will give you peace of mind.

Listeria can be on ANYTHING! The last major outbreak we had I believe was on cantaloupe. The whole no cold cuts rule is relatively new. My friend has a 7 year old and was never told to not eat cold cuts until she was pregnant with her now 4 year old.

I am also very curious to see since this new advice about cold cuts if the incidences of listeria in pregnant women has actually dropped.

My last pregnancy I didn't have any cold cuts. I had DH bring me a sandwich in the hospital the day after I had DS! After reading this thread this morning, I had a turkey sandwich for lunch!! I guess it's true that you're more laid back with your 2nd! My doctor always says everything in moderation is fine.
