My doc said fine as long as from reputable & clean place. I avoided last pregancy but more for the nitrates and sodium.

When i was pg last time there was a lysteria breakout in cantaloupe - so you can't totally avoid it.

I'm not sure how toasting it helps though? Doe it heat it to the high temp needed to kill any bacteria?

I would be heart broken if I couldn't have an A&S pork store Italian sub. There is just so much we can't do and the no cold cuts isn't at the top of my list, don't do it every day is the way I roll, moderation is key Chat Icon

I ate cold cuts with all 3 of my pregnancies. And I never heated them up. I'm sorry, but the thought of steaming hot cold cuts is just gross to me. Chat Icon I just made sure I bought them from a good place and I buy Boars Head.

Exactly. If you are worried about Listeria then you would have to heat them to steaming to kill bacteria. Toasting wouldn't do the trick.

That said I didn't heat any cold cuts I ate when pregnant and I ate a good amount once on bed rest. Like PP said, the last few listeria outbreaks were with produce. No one's doctor has said to avoid fresh produce. You have to do what you are comfortable with.

Thanks for all of the feedback!!

I guess I'm still on the fence at this point. I like the whole everything in moderation rationale so for now I'll probably keep cold cuts in my "cravings" category.

Like all other things on the shouldn't-have-during-pregnancy list, I'll save it for when I really want to make it count Chat Icon (along with my nice sip of wine, feta cheese and caesar dressing hahaha)

me too, I'm not a big cold cuts person though so I rarely have it, but I don't worry when I do.

My dr is on the liberal side I guess. He said cold cuts were fine and just watch out for certain types of cheese.

I ate COLD cold cuts my entire pregnancy. I am fine, my DS is fine. Its more about the nitrates for me than if they can make you sick.

If you have been eating cold cuts your entire life and never been sick from then then really what are the chances you will get sick now...slim. You have just as much chance as getting sick from that chicken you eat or the salad. Salad is actually a higher chance than most other foods.

I had 2 Drs and a High risk dr and all said cold cuts are FINE. Its jsut because someone somewhere decided it was the hot new food to add to the don't eat list.

agreed my doctor said it was fine.

Cold cuts... are they really that risky?

According to the american pregnancy association: http://americanpregnancy.org/pregnancycomplications/listeria.html

1700 people in the US get listeria per year and out of that, 17% are pregnant women- that's only 289 people! Thats such a LOW number. If you have it once in a while you're fine. And also if you're having natural things like Boars head from a place that's CLEAN like most grocery stores probably are on Long Island, I am sure you're fine!

Also if you really want to be safe, heat them up in the microwave or toaster, and then put them back in the fridge to get cold again! The heat is just to kill any germs that may have gotten into the meat while cutting

Re: Cold cuts... are they really that risky?

There are more risks in veggies and fruit than eating cold cuts from a reputable place. Ive eaten them all through my pregnancies and never worried.

The only case of listeria Ive ever personally known of was my sisters boyfriends mother...she contracted it while pregnant with his brother and it was from a bad batch of ice cream! The entire family was sick but the baby she was carrying suffered the most...he was very very sick at birth but was treated and did OK.
