My ped says no cold cuts, what does your ped say?

My ped told me no cold cuts for DD, due to Listeria risk and also nitrates. At least until over one year, at the minimum.

What does your ped say?

They didn't say anything. I started giving low sodium turkey at 10 months old.

I didnt ask them but I dont plan on giving her cold cuts for a WHILE.

They are usually full of salt for one thing...

The listeria I wouldnt be too worried about as long as the cold cuts are fresh--or you could always heat them up before hand.

Re: My ped says no cold cuts, what does your ped say?

My ped didn't say anything either way. We started table food late though so I don't think Kaydyn had cold cuts before she was one.

Now that she is 19 months she eats ham or turkey MAYBE once a week or once every other week. And it's usually only a piece or two so I'm not that worried.

Re: My ped says no cold cuts, what does your ped say?

we aren't really cold cut eaters..
DD just really started eating bologna- and she's gonna be 3 this fall- and my mom gives it to her, not me- i'm not crazy about it..

pretty much all the other suggestions the ped gave me I took w/ a grain of salt, I think we're way to restrictive of children's diets when they are young.. so I pretty much gave her everything (peanut butter, egg, shell fish) when she was 10-11 months old.. knowing that those allergies didn't run in our fam.

Re: My ped says no cold cuts, what does your ped say?

i never asked my ped. i feed DS what we eat. he's had cold cuts since he was 7 months old. i get the meat from a reputable deli and we've never had an issue.

ETA: i should mention that i also ate cold cuts as much as i wanted when i was pregnant too. not every day, but whenever i felt like it. i am more laid back about stuff like that.

My ped. said he can start meats now @ 7 months...but I am going to wait a little longer because we haven't finished introducing all the fruits and veggies.

I didn't even think about the whole cold cut/listeria thing...so I guess I'll use fresh meats once I start Chat Icon Chat Icon

She never mentioned them.
But, Lily is such a picky eater, and cold cuts are one of the few things she enjoys...so I give them to her!

I never asked. Other than American Cheese which she did say was okay.

I just didn't see the point of giving them to him and still don't. He hasn't had hot dogs either--too junky IMO. Though he is a picky eater, if he did want sliced turkey, I probably would give it to him.

Re: My ped says no cold cuts, what does your ped say?

I never asked, but I have tried them with DD she isn't too fond of them. It is an easy lunch for daycare, so I wish she liked them.

My ped never said no to cold cuts. The only thing he wants me to hold off on is peanut butter until DS is 2.

I understand the risk of cold cuts and nitrates and listeria, but honestly, how much is a toddler going to eat? You know?

DS doesn't eat meat, but i don't htink a slice or two is that bad in the long runChat Icon

This is interesting - thanks for posting! I never thought to ask my ped. DS has never eaten cold cuts though...

Re: My ped says no cold cuts, what does your ped say?

I never asked because I don't want her eating them because they are so high in sodium. That's not to say I wouldn't give them to her in a pinch though.

My ped. never mentioned it.

Try Applegate Farms brand. They have no nitrates.

Re: My ped says no cold cuts, what does your ped say?

Well I guess the under 1 yr rule is not too prohibitive. I dont think my son was ready for any cold cuts under that age anyway...maybe he tried some turkey breast, but he never liked any anyhow...
