Cold/virus, on and off fever for going on three weeks already...

is this normal for a child to suffer this long without any type of medication (other than Motrin and Tylenol)? Today was DS's first day back in daycare since he's been feeling a little better (no fever in over 48 hours) and I just called in to check on him and his teacher told me that he is beginning to feel a little warm and has not eaten all day...but he is drinking. He has lost over 5 lbs. already and the doctors keep on telling me that its a virus, to keep on alternating the Tylenol and Motrin...this is starting to sound BS to me...I put a call in to my doctor again and she better see him tonight and see what the heck is going on...he is so pale and just not himself...I'm getting really worried. He has not had a good meal in over a month! He is drinking though and he loves Pediasure...thats the only thing that keeps him going...Chat Icon

I'm sorry he's not feeling well. My little guy is 7 mos old and has been fighting the same cold/ear infection on and off since October. From what our ped told us, it's unfortunately normal when they are in a daycare environment. If it's concerning you, I'd call the doctor and have him checked out, especially because of the weight loss. I hope he feels better soon! Chat Icon

DD woke on 12/4 with a 102 fever. Went to the ped, said her ears/lungs were clear. Ran strep culture & nasal sawb for flu - both negative. By 3PM that day her fever as at 103.7.

Brought her back to ped on 12/5. Same neg on flu test/ Lungs/ears still clear.

Fever continued 12/6 but not as high. Woke 12/7 no fever. By 6PM it was back up to 101.

Back to ped on 12/8. DD gets diagnosed with pneumonia!! Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Gets antibiotics & albuterol. Ped says on 12/9 the wheezing is gone. Fever still present but not nearly as high.

No fever by afternoon of 12/10 & all day 12/11, & 12/12 but by 7PM 12/13 back up to 99.4.

Back to the ped 12/14 . . . diagnosed with a "cold" on top of the pneumonia which is now completely cleared up.

Back to daycare today.

I have no good answers either, but I've taken DD to the ped 5 times, and I've been as diligent as I can as a parent.
