Colic or another growth spurt? Please help I'm losing my mind
DD turned 6 weeks on Tuesday. Normally, she did have her "witching hour" between 7 and 9 pm but was never this bad and it subsided for a while and now it's back with a vengeance. For the past three days, she has been shrieking like she's in pain and now it's spilling over into the daytime hours. She's exhausted but won't sleep, she's hungry but then refuses the bottle. Sometimes she genuinely hungry and takes it but I can't tell the difference anymore, I'm grasping at straws. I don't know what to do anymore and I can't console her crying.
I'm trying the the 5 S's but it's making her cry even more and both DH and I are exhausted. We take turns holding her.

Re: Colic or another growth spurt? Please help I'm losing my mind
Is she swaddled when she sleeps? It sounds to me like she is extremely overtired which is making everything else worse. Where does she sleep? My DS would only sleep in the swing up until a few weeks ago. It wasn't exactly what we wanted, but he got sleep and so did we. Does she sleep when you are holding her?
What does she do when she eats. Neither of my babies have reflux, but it is a common issue that can cause inconsolable crying.

hmmm... 6 weeks is suppose to be a common growth spurt... my ds slept and woke every 2 hours or so hours to be fed- even though he was formula fed...
is she shrieking cause she's having a milk intollerance? hasnt been burped enough to drink more? constipated needing pedialyte
if she's calm when she's held have you tried the papasan seats? sometimes they give the baby alot of comfort

I tried swaddling her with the Miracle Blanket today when she fell asleep in my arms. She woke up within a few minutes and started crying. At night she goes down in her bassinet in our bedroom but she will not go down in it for more than 15 -20 minutes for naps during the day. She used to be able to nap in her swing, she doesn't do that anymore. She does sleep when we hold her, yes. I finally just got her to sleep in her bouncy seat after holding her for about 45 minutes.
I don't *think* she has reflux. Last night during her crying fit we laid her down on the changing table just to cool her off. We were holding her so long and she was hysterical, she was so hot. She calmed down and after a while when we picked her back up (held her upright on our shoulder) she started hysterically crying again. I thought that if reflux was an issue, laying them flat would make them cry, not holding them upright, but I may be wrong. I'm just so confused at this point.

She's on Similac Sensitive and has been for three weeks. I've been using Dr. Browns bottles since she came home from the hospital. I try to burp her at the 2 oz mark but she never burps. I have to let her drink at least 2 1/2 to 3 ounces to get a good burp out of her. She's not constipated, her stools are soft and I took her temperature yesterday and she doesn't have a fever.

DS was crying a lot at that age. sometimes, I think it's just something we have no control over. you only find out it's a growth spurt after the fact (if at the next ped appt, they shot up in height and weight). we used that as our gauge... (DS only became 'unfussy' at roughly 6.5 months It turned out to be all growth spurts!)

Okay well since you don't think it's reflux, the only thing i can think of...
is that you should be putting her to bed by 7pm for the night.
when my son was that age or maybe around 8 weeks (can't remember), he always had the "witching hour" everyone talked about. But then we began to realize that he was exhausted at this point and screaming because he was getting overtired so easily. So we started putting him to bed earlier and he did much better with it!! His "witching hour" as everyone said it was, wasn't that at all. It was him trying to tell us he was ready for bed. My son has always needed A LOT of sleep. Maybe that's the same case for your dc.
Also just to throw it out there, what's her schedule like? bedtime? wake time? time in between naps? how many naps a day?

ok just to rule out reflux because your statement about her being hungry but refusing the bottle makes me wonder...
-does she arch her back or throw her head back while eating? -does she have wet burps? -when she burps, do you smell acid? -are her farts really bad smelling? -does she wake shortly after a feeding? like too short? -Will she sleep better in a rocker, swing, or car seat than when she's flat? -does she cry out in the middle of a feeding? -does she not sleep longer than 2 hours at a time at night?

I would love to get her down a certain time but it is hard to get her to go to sleep/bed. How do you accomplish this? I can rock, cradle, shhhh her for hours it seems and if she doesn't want to sleep, she won't. This is why she is so overtired, I just can't get her to rest.
She really doesn't have a schedule right now. I try to make her last bottle around 9 or 10 pm, I make sure it's in a dim room so she knows it's bed time. As of late, her naps are completely erratic and almost non-existent. She'll take maybe a one hour nap after waking in the morning (which can be anywhere from 6 to 9 am, depending on how many times so woke to feed and what times) and it's a challenge to get her to take an afternoon nap. Today she basically was up from 12:30PM to 8 with sporadic cat naps like 20 minutes here or there.
-does she arch her back or throw her head back while eating? No, I haven't really noticed this
-does she have wet burps? she does occasionally spit up with a burp but not always
-when she burps, do you smell acid? no but i smell the formula
-are her farts really bad smelling? no
-does she wake shortly after a feeding? like too short? yes, lately she has been waking about 15 to 20 minutes after her feeding once i put her down
-Will she sleep better in a rocker, swing, or car seat than when she's flat? yes
-does she cry out in the middle of a feeding? it depends. when she's in her crying fits, she may cry out in her feedings. during "normal" times of the day, she is fine with her feeding
-does she not sleep longer than 2 hours at a time at night? lately she's been going 4 or 5 hours at night, but I suspect it's because she has exhausted herself during her witching hour. about 2 weeks ago she went through a spurt where she was waking every 2 hours to feed but that's stopped.
