College and masks
My son spent half his junior year and all of his senior year virtual. He just didn't want to do the mask thing and got vaccinated as soon as he was able to. He is registered at Sufolk Community College in the fall and I urged him to do in person classes because he needs to get out there. Well, they just announced they will still require masks at all times indoors. Gah. I would have thought for vaccinated students it would be an optional thing. Makes me wonder if all schools will in the fall.
Not looking for a debate, just frustrated.

Totally understand your frustration. I would be be very upset, especially since your son is vaccinated. I wonder what the schools will do in the fall. I know my one son is in a summer program, and they are no mask optional, except on the bus.

Re: College and masks
What was the point of him getting vaccinated if he still has to wear the mask?
I'm not a fan of asking vaccination status but in this case they should absolutely be able to ask so the ones who got vaccinated can go maskless.

College and masks
It is very frustrating - especially since now masks are very limited.
I think, based on this (since it's a state school) and the new CDC guidance, masks will still be required at schools in the fall.
I don't agree with it but, I think that's the direction we are headed.

Re: College and masks
I don't teach at Suffolk, but I am also frustrated by the same general situation--the continuing of required masks for all at college when we have all been able to get vaccinated for months.
OP, did Suffolk announce that masks are definitely required for the fall? Or they announced that masks are currently still required? I wonder if they are saying it for summer classes and will possibly revise for the fall.

Because they can’t make it mandatory for everyone to get vaccinated yet and can’t ask so all need to wear a mask unfortunately at many of these schools in NY.

But why can't they ask? Many people on here have said their employers are requiring it to come into the office or asking who is and who isn't. And apparently that is legal. Why cant' a college say- if you want to go maskless you must show proof of vaccine? If you don't want to disclosure your vaccine status, that is your prerogative but you'll have to wear a mask. Kind of like when they had separate seating for vaccinated people at Yankee stadium. Show proof and you can sit in the vaccinated section- don't want to show proof you have to sit in the unvaccinated section

A number of colleges, including institutions in New York, have made the vaccine mandatory for the fall semester.

They seem to want to relieve faculty and staff from any duty of trying to determine which students are vaccinated or not.

Yes. My boss's son goes to Fordham. They are requiring it. So if you are at a school where the vaccine is required , i would hope they are not requiring masks at those institutions. Because that makes ZERO sense.

Not all it seems because it has not been approved by the FDA yet.

Re: College and masks
This is really stupid, for that they should not have forced these kids to get vaccinated. These rules are so dumb and contradictory and then all the new scientists out there wonder why people don’t want to comply. Because there’s no logic or common sense.

I am in the facebook group and an employee of the college stated that all of the faculty received an email that they are continuing the requirements that all faculty and students wear masks indoors for the fall semester. And one of the reasons stated is that they want to relieve the staff from the duty if trying to determine who is vaccinated and who is not.

I think it should be a choice instead of demanding everyone wear one. Especially if vaccinated, he should be allowed to come in with out one. Sucks that this is the world we live in now that we are subjected to having to stay in check and have no freedom of choice when it comes to this.

My DD goes to SU. They are fully reopening in the fall. They are mandated to be vaccinated. No masks required.

So at this point what is the incentive of getting vaccinated? I get that you are less likely to get severe symptoms and die, but if I can walk into a store without a mask and not be vaccinated and yet I have to wear a mask while sitting in a college classroom regardless of my vaccination status, what is the incentive, especially to younger people?

That is why I told my kids to wait to make their decision. One did, one could not as their college had already set it in stone.

All SUNY schools say they are requiring the vaccine but it is based on the assumption that it will be FDA approved by Fall. I think they will have to reverse that and mandate masks though, because it does not seem like it will happen in time. Suffolk is a SUNY school as well.

You're not supposed to walk into a store without a mask if you're not vaccinated.

Her point is if no one can and will ask you outside of the classroom, then what is the incentive to get vaccinated?

Re: College and masks
If I were a college kid and the vaccine wasn't required at my school, my incentive to get it MIGHT be if they said- hey if you have it and can prove it you don't' have to wear a mask in class At that age, they aren't too worried about getting seriously ill from Covid. That age group is notoriously invincible in their minds. Not to mention the statistics are in their favor as well.
But they may get it for something like not having to wear a mask. So if the goal is to incentivize people to get it, they might want to consider that. If you still have to wear a mask after getting it- I would imagine many just wont get it then.
ETA- and now I'm hearing stories in the other thread about doctors telling fully vaccinated, otherwise healthy people, to double mask on public transportation. So does the vaccine work, or no? If it works why are they telling you to double mask? I don't get it at all.

I was being lazy and abbreviated. She goes to Syracuse. It's not a SUNY.

College and masks
Schools have every right to ask for proof of vaccination if they wish, especially state schools. If they are asking for vaccinations then there should not be masks for those that took it.
