Colored icing/frosting question

Okay bear with me, this is a dumb question! I need to frost cupcakes in different colors. I bought food coloring and the Wilton decorator icing.

My issue is, the icing is disgusting. Its also very oily, thick, and hard to clean up. It is just VILE.

Can I use regulsr white FROSTING, like cream cheese or vanilla flavor and just color that? I really don't have time to make my own.

Awesome. Thanks so much. I did use food coloring today with the gross icing little by little.
