Conceiving and gender selection through a specialist
There was a story on 60 Minutes some time ago about being able to choose the sex of your child. If you could afford it, would you go to a specialist to conceive a child of a specific gender?
Fertility Institute
Do you think doing something like this is "playing god"? They also "weed out" the embryos with possible genetic disorders.
I have two boys and would love a girl but I dont know if I could go this route. I kind of feel if it's meant to be, it's meant to be. I know my mother has mentioned it to me since she WANTS a granddaughter and I'm an only child I'm her only chance (although she was joking I think part of her was serious )
ETA: I wonder what the cost is. I imagine similar to that of IVF and other fertility treatments.

No, if I could afford it, I would not go this route but I would have a large family.. like 6 kids to up my chances of having different genders plus I like a lot of kids laughing & running around the house.. lol
I agree that if it's meant to be, it's meant to be.

Re: Conceiving and gender selection through a specialist
I didn't open the link, but can answer that NO, I would not go to a specialist to choose the gender of my child.
We did IVF for both my pregnancies.
For this pregnancy we did genetic testing on the remaining embryos due to my age and past history (losses, failed attempts, etc). We were able to know the gender of our remaining embryos.
DH and I decided right off the bat that we did NOT want to know the genders when the results came back because we did not want to feel like we were choosing one over the other... either would be a blessing.
With that said, out of my remaining 6 embryos only 2 were viable. We knew we were transferring the two, so we did decide to find out the gender since we were picking. If anymore than the 2 were viable, we would have waited to find out.
ETA: Insurance did not cover the testing. When all was said and done it was $6k out of pocket.

Re: Conceiving and gender selection through a specialist
a co-worker did something like this but not an IVF with PGD for gender. I believe she used IUI and had sperm washing to try to "narrow the field", but she hasn't been very detailed about it. she had 2 boys and really wanted a girl...she got a 3rd boy. I think that method is more successful when trying for a boy.
I say, to each their own. I'm having my second DD and that will be all for us. We were given two girls and will be perfectly happy to have 2 of the same gender. We just want for them to be happy and healthy. We never tried to sway for a gender either, we were just happy to get pregnant. Funny thing is, you would think we would have two boys based on the swaying theories!

Is it common for all who go through IVF treatments to do this kind of testing, gender identity and genetic disorders? I dont know much about IVF and am just curious.

Re: Conceiving and gender selection through a specialist
No I would not. I went through self paid IVF and spent more than $20,000 to have a successful pregnancy. I have two boys. My DH is done so he says. I would try for one more and would love a girl(so I get to experience both) but we would need to self pay again and like I said DH is really not int it-though we've left the door open for it

Re: Conceiving and gender selection through a specialist
i have 2 girls and dh and i thought were done.. then we realized we wanted another baby. we didnt care AT ALL boy or girl. and i had a baby boy..it is awesome. the only thing is. we always said from day 1 we wanted 3. because dh and i are 1 of 3. and now i want another boy for my son. this is the only time i actually would pick a gender. but i can conceive in a blink of an eye. which i am lucky. so i cant be selfish and go and pick my gender. if it happened it happened..i love my girls and i love my boy! but as of right now. im DONE! .

It's not the norm....It's really a case by case.
I'm 39 (was 37 at the time of my egg retrieval). I also had prior losses. After my 1st IVF loss we asked my RE about doing the genetic testing (gender identity is NOT the primary goal of the testing, but it's something they already know when they look at the chromosomes). He didn't think it was necessary. After my DD was born and we went back to the RE to TTC #2, my RE strongly encouranged us to do the testing based on my age and the fact that I did have a loss with my 2nd IVF attempt (twins, but lost one). He felt, and we agreed that since I only had one more insurance attempt, it would increase our odds by knowing if we were putting back healthy embryos. Thus avoiding, or trying to avoid anymore emotional distress by more miscarriages. He felt that the two prior losses were due to genetic abnormalities. We did it to give us better odds of getting pregnant with #2 and having a healthy baby. Of course nothing is gauranteed though, but we wanted to give ourselves the best possible odds.
As I indicated, had there been more than 2 viabable embryos we would have NOT asked to know the gender before hand. I was just much too uncomfortable with that.

Me either. I do feel like it's sort of playing God. It's our of our hands, and we are dealt the cards we are dealt with. WIth so many horrible diseases and sicknesses out there I just thank my lucky stars to have healthy children.

I would never ever do it. I want the babies I am meant to have, I would never pay to have the gender selected...
I could maybe understand a couple doing this because of some kind of genetic thing but I just think this world is getting crazy. It's very very scary to me. Can you imagine if all of us got to pick what we wanted?? It would eliminate some of the best surprises we've all had.

You hit the nail on the head...I feel the same way. maybe I was naive but I didnt realize they did all of this.
Between the three of us we have 6 boys, pretty soon we can form our own babeball team

I feel like it is taking advantage of the technology we have, KWIM? Pretty soon people are going to want to pick their kids eye and hair color.

Re: Conceiving and gender selection through a specialist
I believe it is about $15K and the odds aren't nearly as close to 100% as they shoyld be for that kind of money.
If a couple wants to- it's their choice, no one should judge. People want whay they want and that's not wrong.
That being said, I DO believe we get the baby we are meant to have. I had no idea I NEEDED a , that being a boy mom would be the best thing that ever happened to me. I may not have realized it, but I feel so blessed to have this little blue bundle of love and energy so I guess some things are best left to fate.
Maybe LOST left me pondering fate too much

No. Would absolutely NOT do it.
Not to "choose" the sex of the child. Not to "weed out" a child less than perfect. Not for any reason.
Thats me though, and I know that my opinion is not the majority.

Nope. I feel so blessed to have two healthy kids and if we are to have a third it does not matter to me what we have as long as its healthy. I do think its playing god a little and I would be afraid of any repercussions. ( but that might be my catholic guilt coming out )

Before I had DS I really wanted to have a boy and a girl. Now I can honestly say it really wouldn't matter so there is no way I'd spend money on that.

I did too for my first DD through an RE. You can do washing to try to separate the sperm for gender selection if you want to/pay to.

DH and I have talked about this. He REALLY wants a boy. We can afford it, but it freaks me out. I think it freaks him out too. So, I think the answer for us is no.

That's how I feel about the topic in general.
I personally have been blessed and am lucky to have no trouble getting pregnant whatsoever, so I feel like I shouldn't mess with things.
