Convertible car seats. At what point do you face them forward?
Stupid question, I know, but DS is 9 months old and he's getting to the point where his feet are pushing against the back of the seat pretty badly. I feel like when I put him in the rear-facing carseat, he's cramped.
He's 31 inches long, 21 lbs. at 9 months old. When can I flip the convertible car seat to be front-facing?

The AAP suggests waiting until 2. The earliest you can turn DC around is 1 year AND 20 lbs.

I switched it Forward ON his first birthday. would have done it sooner because he was pretty much sitting Indian style, but DH was NOT going for it.

Many people turn the seat around at a year old.
DD is 15 months old and is still rear facing. I intend to keep her that way as long as I can.
At 9 months old, I would NOT do it.

It depends on the child. DD was 26 months before I changed her seat to forward facing. Was she sitting indian style? Yes, but it has been pointed out numerous times in the past, car accident data does not point to substantial injury resulting from children sitting crossed legged in car seats, while children who are turned too early can become paralyzed in a rear collision.

But has it been studied about children sitting crossed legged in an accident? There's no way my son would even FIT rear facing until 2!

Re: Convertible car seats. At what point do you face them forward?
Strange.... I got my car seat installed by the town of hempstead police they faced my seat foward , ds is 8 months but 22 pounds. He said there is a misconception! it's 1 yr OR the weight.... DS has been facing foward since 6 months when we put the big seat in. I also remember him saying if they face rear and the legs are hitting the seat , god forbid of a car accident the damage can be very harmful.

I really don't think it's weight OR age...
Loey is not even 5 months but already 20 lbs... there's no way we're turning him anytime soon!
The dangers are much more serious when they are forward facing too early as far as I know... they can have spinal cord injuries, etc.

Re: Convertible car seats. At what point do you face them forward?
This is directly from the AAP website:
"Infants should ride rear-facing until they reach the highest weight or height allowed by their car safety seat’s manufacturer. At a minimum, children should ride rear-facing until they have reached at least 1 year of age and weigh at least 20 pounds. When children reach the highest weight or length allowed by the manufacturer of their infant-only seat, they should continue to ride rear-facing in a convertible seat."

That's very strange....
I didn't switch DD to a convertible car seat until she was 13 months old. At that time, I took it to our local inspection station to have it installed.
The guy saw DD was 13 months old and said to me: "okay, we are installing the car seat in the middle and rear facing" He then said to me "if you ask me to install it forward facing, I will NOT do it, and WILL give you a hard time"
I was okay with this, since I had no intention of putting the seat forward facing.
I WILL however put her forward facing when we re-install the infant seat this summer before arrives. Her seat won't fit rear facing behind either the drivers seat or passenger seat. She will be almost 19 months at that time.

I would turn that badboy around asap.
To the OP - do a search, there was just a HUGE discussion on this a few weeks ago. There were plenty of videos on why kids should stay rear facing as long as possible.

ITA. I personally would not have my child forward facing at 6 months. Their necks and spine are not fully developed at that age.
We switched DS at 15 months back when the recommendation was 1 year. Now that I know it is 2 years, DD will be rear facing as long as possible.

Re: Convertible car seats. At what point do you face them forward?
They really aren't uncomfortable at all. AJ is 24lbs and 20mo old and still rear facing in our Mazda6 4door sedan while sitting in a Recaro Convertible Car Seat.
she sleeps back there, or kicks her feet on the seat etc. Sure her legs are bent. She's safe tho. For me that's all that matters.
My aunt keeps trying to get me to turn her around, I refuse. She tells me that AJ cries because she's bored back there looking backward, her legs hurt, she's cramped, shes uncomfortable, she hates it, its so hard to put her in there (lift up etc), too hard to take out etc.
None of that changes the fact that in my mind she's SAFER and with the right attitude AJ doesn't actually care. Since my aunt always treats it like torture, AJ feeds off of that and acts like it is. I treat it like business as usual and really I get no grief.

Re: Convertible car seats. At what point do you face them forward?
My DD is 16 months old and I have no issues with her still sitting in her rear facing car seat. I am going to try to keep her rear facing until she is 2 according to the new recommendations. She is only 22 pounds, and not that tall so she's not squished in the seat. She doesn't mind it at all, she waves to me in the mirror we put up for her.

honestly, that is against everything I have EVER heard
ask your ped, it is one year AND 20 lbs
you should never put them foward facing before one year
there is info out there that in a collision, the impact is MUCH worse for a child with little to no neck strength when they are forward facing

and honestly, I would switch him back to rear facing...it is really not safe to have him foward facing at 9 months old
