Corn Syrup??? Lets debate formula....
First I wanted to thank everyone that helped with my questions about constipation and spitting up and farting....
So after being more "forceful" with my pediatrician (who still didnt think there was much of a concern), she agreed to change his formula to Similac Sensitive RS and I have to say that I have seen a huge change in my llittle man since Tuesday. His gas is almost completely gone as well as the spitting up. My happy little boy is back!
However, on the flip side, he is GOBBLING down formula. Before we switched, he was eating between 3-4ozs every 3 hours. Now with this new formula he cant seem to get enough. He is eating around 8ozs every 4 hours...nearly double.
After doing a little research on this new formula, I come to realize that the second ingredient is Corn Syrup and I'm not pleased. I looked at the Similac Advanced and there is no corn syrup in that one. I dont know, but I dont like the fact that I'm stuffing my son with corn syrup...being that he comes from families (on both sides) with weight issues, I am concerned.
That being said, he is so much happier on this new formula. Are there any similar formulas out there there that are not loaded with corn syrup? Or am I just being rediculous? I feel like just because my son is happier with a "candy bar" in his mouth, doesnt mean its GOOD for him. Would love people's thoughts on this.....

Re: Corn Syrup??? Lets debate formula....
I personally would just be happy he is eating and feeling better, I wouldn't worry about the corn syrup for now. It's not like you are giving him a Twinkie every 4 hours know what I mean? But that's just me

Hmm...that is a tough call. I wouldn't be thrilled with the corn syrup in there either. But if my baby was having difficulties with the other formula, I guess I'd have to consider it. A really tough call.
Are there alternatives to the one he's on now (that he likes but has corn syrup) that doesn't have corn syrup?

I don't think you're being ridiculous at all!!!!!!! You should def. look into a formula without corn syrup or at least less of it.

Re: Corn Syrup??? Lets debate formula....
Is this one of the formulas where the proteins are already broken down like good start? I know when we switched DS to good start he was hungrier more often and the Ped said it was because the pre-broken down formulas are lighter and digested faster.
Ets: sorry, that wasn't your question! I am suffering from baby brain

Re: Corn Syrup??? Lets debate formula....
Have you looked just at the regular similac sensitive to see if that one has corn syrup? I know that is what we have used for DS because he was having alot of spit up problems. But I really don't know if it had corn syrup, which I think is just very weird to put in baby formula.

Re: Corn Syrup??? Lets debate formula....
this just pisses me off the read.
WHY does baby formula need corn syrup.
i am started to hate corn farmers
that being said, I would look for something similar without it.
unless a ped. dietician could tell me the corn syrup has some kind of soothing effect on the stomach..i'd need to know WHY it was in there.
effing corn syrup.
can you tell I hate it?!
ETA: MOTHAEFFA.
gentlease is made with corn syrup solids. that is what I supplement Luce with. now i am REALLY pizzed.
and on the hunt. if I find an alternative, I'll let you know.

Re: Corn Syrup??? Lets debate formula....
Just sent this email to Enfamil
Good morning.
I am writing to question the presence of corn syrup solids in your product Gentlease. I switched my son to this product from Enfamil premium when he was having gas issues and am very upset to see this ingredient in the Gentlease product, especially when it is absent from the Premium Lipil. Can someone explain WHY exactly it is necessary to have corn syrup in an infant's formula?
I look forward to hearing your response.

Re: Corn Syrup??? Lets debate formula....
If anyone is interested, this is a very informative link
Corn Syrup in baby formula
Personally, I feel that as long as the baby is getting all the necessary fats, proteins, nutrients, vitamins and minerals from the baby formlua, and the other ingredients are not harmful or poisonous, I'm okay with the corn syrup. There are alternatives out there though.

After reading this site, I understand why the corn syrup is there, but now I'm nervous about feeding gentlease to DS. It seems like he might not be getting as much nutrition as babies using standard formula....

Re: Corn Syrup??? Lets debate formula....
We switched DS to Similac Sensitive for the same reasons, then like you, I noticed it was very sweet, and guess why?!?
This annoyed me to no end. We did use Enfamil Gentlease which did not have corn syrup when we started using it. Though I want to say I noticed it on the list of ingredients much later, but he was about to switch to milk by then, so I didn't bother changing again. I want to say that, but that period of time is such a hazy blur in my mind.
So read the ingredients. Good Start might be fine also, and I no they have a similar formula.
Why do they add the corn syrup? Because it's cheap. Though you are right, you don't need to get your baby hooked on such a sweet flavor so early in life.

Re: Corn Syrup??? Lets debate formula....
sophia is on good start gentle plus and i dont see corn syrup on the label
we looked at the "no frills" equivalent to good start at BRU and it was full of cr@p, including corn syrup. guess thats why its so cheap

Ah, so my mind is not as hazy as I think sometimes. Yes, they did not have corn syrup when we switched to Gentlease, but it was added later. I do remember pouring over those labels, so I am certain it was not there.
My guess is that they remove milk sugars to make your baby less gassy. Without the milk sugars, the formular probably doesn't taste good, so they throw in corn syrup because it's cheap. Though I would think there are other sweeteners that are not as bad for baby.

Re: Corn Syrup??? Lets debate formula....
Ped dieititian here!!
OK..first before getting to the corn syrup issue. If you look at a can of Isomil, allimentum, similac organic you will find that the 2nd ingredient is sucrose - or pure table sugar. About 11tsp in 1 day of feeding. Think about how many packets you put in your coffee..imagine putting 11 packets!! NUTS.
Why is it in formula...b/c it is the cheapest form of a carbohydrate you can get.
Corn syrup - still sugar, but more expensive form of a carbohydrate. A bit better.
There was actually a ban on formula in Europe b/c of this issue. All formulas w/sucrose are no longer allowed as of 2010 in Europe, but corn syrup solids are allowed. Why..b/c a study was done on child obesity and showed that sucrose was the culprit (I don't buy it - but we won't bring that up). Sweetness levles in BM are:
Lactose - 15%
Formula - Corn syrup - 55%
Sucrose - 100%
So they are basically saying that sucrose gives children an affinity towards sweets.
Anyway...I would never dismiss this issue, but you will have a very very hard time finding a formula w/o any form of sugar in it. What you should all be looking at is the DHA levles. This is way more important for baby's development - brain, and central nervous system. EU, WHO, NIH, ADA all recommend that babies get .2% of fatty acids as DHA from formula. Enfamil and good start all contain .32%. SIMILAC is the only formula out there on the shelves that does not meet the recommendation. They have .15%. To me..this is absurd. I no longer recommend Similac products for this reason.
HTH!

Not sure how I would feel honestly, but wanted to suggest you looking into Good Start, we had great success with their formula when it came to DS being gassy and uncomfortable.

it does.
thank you very much. I appreciate this.
I am still but what can you do.
my one comfort is that my son is fed mostly breast milk...and I personally try to avoid corn syrup when I eat.
thanks again.

Does that .15% difference between Similac and other formula's really make that much of a difference? I gave DS #1 Similac and am giving it to DS #2. Not for nothing, we didnt have DHA and all these other nutirents in our formula's growing up.

Re: Corn Syrup??? Lets debate formula....
Look into organic brands of formula. I don't believe they contain corn syrup. That crap should be banned!! I try so hard to avoid it with my kids but when you have an underweight DD like mine who has a very limited diet you tend to just give her whatever.

Re: Corn Syrup??? Lets debate formula....
Yes, Gentlease and all Enfamil products contain the .32%
Does DHA make a difference - YES! There are soo many clinical studies showing the improvement in brain development, immune benefits, cognitive developments, and also benefits for adults. This is why pregnant moms get DHA in prenate's. During 3rd trimester preferential DHA is transfered via placenta from the mothers stores and go directly to baby's brain growth. Most of babies brain is composed of fat and mostly DHA. This is why it is super important for preemies to get the additional DHA from BM or formula.
I personally get very upset from a nutritional standpoint that Similac continues to be the only formula w/o the proper doseage (as DHA is dose dependent). Even store brands contain proper levels. SImilac charges the same if not more for their products and it contains half the amt of DHA as Enfamil products.
Thats my soapbox! Sorry for the rant

Re: Corn Syrup??? Lets debate formula....
i dont know about corn syrup but yes- my son's bottles increase to 8-9 oz x 6 feedings
there is something about since they took the lactose out its less filling? i dunno...
anyways... when he started eating solids at 4 months he did start having less formula like he went down to 6 and now he takes about 4-5 oz...only 4 feedings
and at 6 months he was allowed to try a switch back so he did half and half, and now he's on full lactose formula.
