Coronavirus fear and worry?
Is anyone else growing more concerned about this? I’m reading more and more that the numbers are actual much higher and it’s much more easy to get and more deadly. I’m normally not a fearful or panicky person but it feels like no one is saying much about how we could stop it if it started to spread rapidly in the U.S. That scares me. We’re traveling down South for February break too and I’m seriously thinking of masks for the plane even though they say they might not do much mentally I think it would help me ... guess I’m just curious to hear if anyone else has these thoughts. I worry about the flu too but for some reason I find coronavirus especially concerning these last few days...

Coronavirus fear and worry?
Thanks for the article!
In general, I feel like this stuff is made worse by the media bc they jump on it to sell papers and get clicks. I try to remember years ago when it seemed like shark attacks were on the rise, when really it was the same but the media zoomed in on it for some reason and scared the crap out of everyone.

Re: Coronavirus fear and worry?
It is a concern with me, but not a worry, only because of my commute into the city. I live in Northeastern Queens and commute by railroad and express bus. This may come out the wrong way, but I refuse to take the 7 subway line because it goes thru Flushing. I hate Flushing anyway because it is so crowded and so dirty.
Other than that, frequent hand washing - Purell does nothing for viruses - and not touching my face are what I am doing. It is something I do anyway especially during cold and flu season. I considered a mask, but decided against it.

Re: Coronavirus fear and worry?
I think a lot of it has to do with the hype by the media. Anyone that is coming in they are making sure to check that they are clear. I think there are only 5 reported cases so far.

Coronavirus fear and worry?
The Coronavirus does not concern me. The fatality rate is very low. This year's flu concerns me. I teach HS and have never had so many students absent before with the flu and I've been teaching for 14 years. Schools near me have shut down for 1-2 days due to so many students and staff having it.

Coronavirus fear and worry?
This is not concerning to me at all, because far more people die from the flu each year. I think it's media hype. Doesn't anyone remember last year, all of the kids dying of the flu? I also think the "Flushing is dirty" comments are pretty disgusting.

Well, she did preface it with "this may come out the wrong way" but we all know what she means by that.
ETA: I am not worried about coronavirus in the slightest.

Have you ever walked thru Flushing ? Main Street and Roosevelt Avenue, even Union Street, the transportation hub. The streets and sidewalks are not clean at all, there is filth everywhere. Never have I ever seen a Starbucks so filthy that I walked out of it without ordering anything. The people that spit and blow their noses onto the sidewalk. So that is why my comment about Flushing is dirty.

I've been through Flushing plenty of times. I used to work at Citifield.
You're making an incredibly general and racist statement about a place being dirty and I ask you, who lives there? What is their nationality and/or ethnicity?

Im a little worried, because we are getting on a plane next week, and just seeing a cruise ship pull in to NJ with potential virus carriers.

What makes what she said racist? I don't think she mentioned race in any PP. Somebody can't say how dirty a particular neighborhood is now?

FWIW, the LIRR passes through and stops in the exact same neighborhoods.

I was born and raised in Queens. That part of Flushing is dirty. I don’t know if you’ve walked around the area PP is discussing, but it’s gross. Just like lots of other parts of Queens and LI, inhabited by a variety of people.
Do I think anyone is going to get coronavirus from walking through there? No. But to deny it’s dirty is ridiculous.

Yes but you can get an express train that passes over most of Queens. I really don't know how the buses work...

What???? How is it racist to say a particular neighborhood is dirty? She is not saying, I won't go to Flushing because it's predominantly Chinese, and Chinese people are dirty. She's saying Flushing in particular is dirty. There are plenty of predominantly Chinese neighborhoods that are not dirty, Flushing happens to not be one of them. And if you think Flushing is clean then your standard of cleanliness is pretty low. There are neighborhoods in Queens and on Long Island that I find to be filthy - I can tell you some are white, some are black, some are hispanic, etc. Uncleanliness does not discriminate....

Re: Coronavirus fear and worry?
same!
two days ago, i had chinese food at work. people were joking about the coronavirus. i laughed while i ate my yummy food.
the first people to be flown out of china are being quarantined near where i work. i am not worried.
the flu scares me more. my hands are raw from all the hand-washing i do during flu season.
if it takes me out, at least i won't have to deal with bullsh!t at work anymore... i'm sick and tired of hearing people's problems and gossip. just in case no one finds my will... my son gets everything!! lol

Because she started talking about “the people” and everyone knows it predominantly Asians. Her first comment sounded snobby and borderline racists, whether she meant it or not the second response sounded straight up racist. Also flushing is bigger than the transportation hub so maybe instead of saying flushing she should of said I hate that area of where the terminal is. She generalized all of flushing.

You are the only one turning the PP's comment into something it is not.
I grew up in Queens, and that part of it is nasty gross. I don't care what group of people live there - it is the truth!
So if you don't find anything wrong with the smells, the garbage, the bodily fluids spat everywhere or the rats then I would venture to say your level of what is considered clean is not up to my standards and most other people.
