cost of converting to gas
aren't we supposed to "go green" and reduce our dependency on foreign oil?
I called National Grid today to inquire about converting to gas. We don't have a gas line on our street - and to run a gas line from the nearest one to our house --- $29,325!!!!
They've got to be kidding. I'm completely disgusted.

I think it was over $36,000 for us, for the same reason. Since I primarily wanted if for cooking I opted to stay with our current set up.

Re: cost of converting to gas
My parents converted this past weekend. They didn't want to pay to have the gas line moved down the street, so they had a tank put in and converted that way. If the line is ever moved, they can then hook up to it, but for now, it will work for them. They are taking advantage of the tax rebate for this year.

eeck! I called recently and keyspan said they pay for the first foot and we have to pay the rest so it was $10K plus the cost of the new tank.

Re: cost of converting to gas
Wow... $$$$
Luckily because I have a house in a corner street I could tap into the side street where the gas line is. The gas line does not come in my street. My neighboors cannot get gas.

The woman on the phone didn't say anything to me about that - even she laughed when she told me the number!
I just said "ok let me get this straight, you want me to spend almost $30,000 just to get a gas line to my house so you can bill me every month?" She laughed and said "I guess so"
I feel like there has to be an answer. DH of course wants me to call News12, Newsday, and our local government officials and complain but I really don't know what to do.

In some areas (like mine) you would need 3+ neighbors for the gas company to go into a street. They won't do it otherwise.

Re: cost of converting to gas
When I called a few years ago - they told me they would go a certain distance without the huge charge- a couple hundred yards, I think.
So they told me to figure out which house is that many yards away from the central line, and convince them to get gas. Then keep on calculating out and convincing the people who could get it for cheap until it was close enough to my house for me to get it for cheap.
Sure - yah I'll get right on that.
