Crate Training Question from a new puppy owner
Hi everyone. This is my first time posting on this thread because I'm a first time dog owner!! DH and I just got an adorable Boston Terrier on Monday and we've def. fallen in love. Our little Ralphie has been very cooperative in training thus far. He only had one accident in his crate the first night we got him-- no accidents in the house or in his crate since ( for none!) Anyway, my question was this: We're using newspaper to line the crate, as this was suggested to us by the pet store we bought him from. Several people have told us to use wee-wee pads, but I'm reluctant to do so because they are laced with a scent that attracts the dog to go to the bathroom on it. (I don't want him to un-learn what he has learned). Is newspaper hazardous to the dog? What did you/ do you use to line your dog's crate?
Thanks!!

Re: Crate Training Question from a new puppy owner
Honestly, I wouldn't line the crate with anything like that b/c it could encourage him to go in the crate.
If you want to put anything in there (and some may disagree) you could put a blanket in there for him to lay on. But I would only do that after you're sure he won't go in the crate.
Congrats on your new pup... Be sure to post pictures!

Re: Crate Training Question from a new puppy owner
I am a first time dog owner too and went through the crate training. We never used newspaper or wee pads. I think if you use newspaper or the pads, it will confuse your pup and he will continue to make in the crate.
When does he have his accidents? At night? If so, puppies could only hold their bladder for so long. YOu may want to limit his water intake a few hours earlier before bedtime and/or get up in the middle of the night to take him out. As for us, I was lucky in that when we got him at 9 weeks, he went the whole night without peeing.
Good Luck!

I agree with the others make sure the crate isn't too big. I know it's hard. Dogs are sooo routine oriented. As soon as you let hm out of the crate take him outside.
remember routine!
Good luck!

Re: Crate Training Question from a new puppy owner
We used cardboad on the bottom of our crate. Once we felt she was getting the hang of it we then put in a blanket/towel on the bottom.

We never lined the crate with anything either. He had very few accidents, as we took him out everyu couple of hours even in the middle of the night. Then we used Poochie Bells to train him to go outside and he was housebroken in no time! You can google search them or FM me for more info.
