Re: Credit Card Debt - How Much Are You In?

I don't think it's that wierd that it is split between having $0 cc debt and over $5k. Most people I know have either less than $1k in cc debt or over $10k. Not too many in between...

we dont have any CC debt or studen loans or anything, actually have a ton of money in the bank

that's cool

that is good you have $$$$ in the bank - but unfortunately if I didnt have student loans I wouldnt have been able to go to college...and people CAn have CC debt AND $$$ in the bank - aka 0% cards.

I do not think she was saying it is bad to have cc debt, she was just saying she did not have any....why so defensive?

ITA!!! I am EXTREMELY proud that my DH and I are debt free. Our mortgage, utility bills, and others are paid every single month.

I think it was more the way it was worded. No one asked how much money anyone had in the bank.
IMO it's a little tacky to supply that kind of info.

I never said how much money i had in the bank. sorry i offended you

You didn't offend me! Chat Icon I didn't think you were trying to brag or be obnoxious.

Heck, I have student loans and a car loan AND lots of money in the bank / investments... but those investments are earning more interest than I'm paying on this debt. Debt + having plenty of money aren't necessarily mutually exclusive.

ITA - thats what I was trying to say, Kara put it alot better Chat Icon

Re: Credit Card Debt - How Much Are You In?

I don't think the figures in the poll are accurate... or at least they're not a good measure of debt. $5k in cc debt when you make 20 or 30 times that in a year is nothing. DH and I have combined just a drop over 5k in cc debt left over from some home improvements. Totally manageable for us and I'm paying it down very aggressively and hope to get it down to 0 by the end of this year.

Most of the people I know who are in trouble with cc debt owe 10k or more. I had debt problems about 10-12 years ago, ironically with only about half as much debt as I do now (but about a quarter of the salary). I think the debt to income ratio really makes all the difference.

I think we owe about $3,000.....We made some purchases on DR furniture when we recently bought our house. Luckily, it's 0% interest until 2009, so we'll have it paid off way before then.

Honestly, I disagree with practicing this. Credit cards companies will do anything to not have you pay off your bills right away. We always pay things off immediately. I will not give a dime to credit card companies.

Let me add-in: I will not give a dime anymore... now that I live in a two-income home. When I was single I couldn't live without credit card debt.

No one should be ashamed to have credit card debt if it's because of living necessities. It's hard to live on dinky salaries in NY.

Just as an FYI, paying your credit cards in full every month is less helpful for your credit score than carrying a low balance.

No offense taken whatsoever....it just wasn't necessary to tell people that you have "a ton of money in the bank".

That's like someone aksing what shoe size you wear and you saying you own 50 pairs of Manolos. While it may be true, that wasn't the question.

It CAN be taken as you being a showoff.

Honestly who cares if I am showing off. The same thing can be said for the opposite side, all i read on LIW and LIFE is how no one has money or money problems, or people crying poverty, or how hard it is to afford a house and bills.

I think you should show off by paying off my credit cards, that'll show'em. Chat Icon

I wholeheartedly agree- it was so hard for me to get by when I first went on my own and I got into debt- but for me, it was better than living with my parents. DH handles the money, and pays our cc bill in full every month.

Re: Credit Card Debt - How Much Are You In?

Um, as far as the whole showing off tacky answer thing, isnt this question/post altogether a bit tacky, to ask someone? Would this conversation be something that came up at an LIF GTG ? I doubt it..

Topics and conversations just come up on here, I guess she was just playing along. Chat Icon

and far as the shoes comment, lets be for real, we hear all too often how many brand this and brand that everyone has way too often on here, no? Do we ask for that info? usually not. Chat Icon

just talking to myself. Chat Icon
