Crib makers may end drop-side cribs

http://www.newsday.com/news/nationworld/ny-uscrib0320,0,7066436.story

THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
6:24 AM EDT, March 19, 2009

WASHINGTON - Crib makers have proposed a ban on drop-side cribs following infant deaths, injuries and a series of recalls.

Members of a committee that sets industry standards say the proposal would end production of drop-side cribs where one side moves up and down in order to more easily pick up and lay down a baby. Instead, it would require cribs to have four immovable sides.

Michael Dwyer, executive director of the Juvenile Products Manufacturers Association, an industry trade group, says the proposal put forward at a meeting Tuesday outside Philadelphia would allow for about a 6-inch top rail on one side that could fold down to let shorter people or those with back troubles more easily lift a baby.

Several more votes on the proposal before ASTM International, an organization that sets voluntary industry safety standards for everything from toys to the steel used in commercial buildings, would be necessary before the ban went into effect and approval could take months.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission says at least three children have died in drop-side cribs in the last 18 months and there have been five recalls involving more than 3 million cribs. The agency has received more than 200 complaints, including about 70 incidents where the drop-side came loose or off the tracks.

Consumer advocates have complained for years about the cribs because the drop-side can detach, creating a dangerous gap that can entrap and suffocate infants.

I've never been a fan of drop-side cribs. They've always made me nervous.

Of course one more thing to worry about that I never thought of.

I have one. What do I do now? Do I get rid of it? I don't like reading this.

Where does the dropside go wrong?

Re: Crib makers may end drop-side cribs

What I don't get is that they've been using drop side cribs for years now( I know my crib from me and my bro was a drop side and over 35 years old!)
I would just think that since they've been around for so long that if they were that much of a danger they would have been recalled years ago.

This is my problem with many of the recalls or possible recalls that are out there. While yes I believe that they are valid and people should be made aware of the possible dangers. I also believe that some of the recalls(some toys) are due to the fact of not reading the directions or not using them under the proper supervision.
I remember when my DD's Easy bake oven had a few recalls and replacement parts until they just asked you to send the oven back because if a child stuck their hand into the oven it might get burnt. Hello, is it just me, but I wouldn't let my daughter just use the oven without my supervision and instructions. And if she wasn't going to use it safely i wouldnt let her use it at all. I mean come on now, some of this stuff is just common sense.

Yeah, we had that and were never allowed to use it without my mom. Hello is right....don't make an OVEN a child's toy then.

Thankfully we already have ours. I could in no way shape or form lift DS out of his crib without it.

I agree with a PP that these types of cribs have been around for a very long time. Perhaps the quality for some has deteriorated but that should be the concentration, not a total recall. IMO, it's a bit extreme. Every parent should have the right to pick out their crib based on drop rail or not.

I know how you feel because I recently bought one for my daughter before she was born. My DS's crib is not a drop side and I thought I would try the drop side with my DD. AAAAAHHHHHHH!!! I do not like reading this either.

Interesting. I have one and I don't see how it can be dangerous. To drop the side you have to push the bottom of the rail in and pull up then push down. I mean it takes a lot for me to do it Chat Icon

Not all drop-side cribs are made the same. Not everyone latches them back up properly, especially if they are exhausted and not paying attention at 3am. Some people have completely forgotten to put the side back up after putting DC back in.

Oh ok, so it's more of user error then of equiptment malfunction.

I also probably thing that low-end manufacturers' cribs are probably more flimsy overall, and maybe the latches don't latch as properly as more established brands. At least that's my thinking.

I don't think that's true. I have a $50 crib w/ a drop down side and it's very sturdy. Even the CPSC guy that came to my house said it was a great rock solid crib.

When Nicholas was a baby, I also had a low end crib w/ a drop down side and never had an issue with it not popping into place when bringing up the side.

I think a lot of the problems are user error, but it's also true that some cribs (the ones that were actually recalled) had a manufacturing defect, and the latches had problems (not latching properly, releasing too easily, catching DC's clothes, etc.
